Personally don't mind it much. I've always liked Heroes 4, although it wasn't quite as good as Heroes 3 for sure, but I honestly don't see it much diffrently from HotA's use of the Ivory Tower from Heroes 4, or even just the recycling of hero names in the games, like Moandor, Solmyr, Theodorus and Sandro. I believe Heroes 4 takes place in the very near future of Heroes 3 anyways, so it bothers me a little less in general than it would, had it remade pieces from Heroes 5 or so.

Stoked to see some nordic folklore in HoMM 3! Jultomten (as someone else stated, basically The Yule Gnome) is our modern name of Santa Claus in Swedish, but the old lore speaks of a house-tomte that lived on and took care of a farm/cottage and all the people and animals who lived there. He was only up by night and kept hidden from the humans. If they were nice he helped them and cared for them, but if they misbehaved or didn't take care of the animals he could literally give them an invisible kick in the but or a slap in the face. The humas usually put out a bowl of porridge as an offering to the house-tomte and this tradition still lives on in parts of sweden (at least during christmas).

Yo tiny lore points coming from the Might and Magic RPG series- Falagar is a minor (but lore-important) character in Might and Magic 6 as he's the Gate Master who Town Portals the player party away from their home of Sweet Water when the devils invade and gets them to New Sorpigal where you start the game. You can meet him and hang out there too if you want. And Vori was subject to some mystery/controvercy in Might and Magic 7 as it appears very overtly on the Town Portal map. It has its name written up as all the other TPable areas have, yet you can't get there. By any means. I never found any concrete information from a developer or something but my suspicions are that Vori was intended to be an area you could go to in Might and Magic 7, but was cut for time reasons (might and magics were released pretty much yearly so it was hard to fit a full development cycle iN) and there are remnants left such as the map having Vori listed seemingly as a possible Town Portal. Additionally the game had Manticores (yes, from HoMM3) in the code, but they weren't anywhere in the game. You could find them by entering the arena at the correct level, where you'd fight a randomly pulled selection of enemies based on your level from all enemies in the game. Manticores seemingly were not pulled from the Arena spawn list when they removed all other Vori-related information. So yeah it's really cool to finally see Vori get the attention that MM7 players could potentially have been waiting 23 years for. Nice to see my boy Falagar too.

Just a small note on the Jotun that a lot of people get wrong. They are not necessarily frost giants, that's a stereotype enforced by especially Hollywood and the MCU. In reality, Jotun just describes beings that represent nature and in essence chaos, while the gods of norse mythology represent order and culture - so they are in essence opposites. But there was still a degree of order to how the Jotun lived, just as there is order in the natural food chain and the animal/natural kingdom in general. Anyways, it's just to say that Jotun =/= frost giant, but some frost giants might be considered to be Jotun. Hope it makes sense :D
@misioklesmisioklesowaty62163 жыл бұрын
Almost all H3 creatures are made using D'n'D stereotypes.
@starcraft2own3 жыл бұрын
That's.. not quite correct. Every Frost giant IS a Jotun while not every Jotun is a Frost giant. "Jotun" translated literally means "Giant". But the original meaning of 'Jotun' didn't actually mean giant or refer to something that's large. It just meant something along the lines of "devourer." So it's very possible that the old norse stories are not about gods fighting giant people but something completely else. The word shifted fairly early on to mean giant though. The rest you said is correct though, just not about the "Jotun =/= frost giant," part as that is actually not true, A frost giant quite literally is a Jotun. Always. EDIT: Also it's a fair assumption to make that a Jotun is a frost giant as a huge majority of giants that the gods interact with tend to be frost giants, the giants that are married to norse gods are all frost giants. Skadi being a notable example of this.
@Real_MisterSir3 жыл бұрын
@@starcraft2own Yea indeed, that's why I wanted to imply that a frost giant may be seen as a Jotun, but the term Jotun in general doesn't mean specifically a giant. It refers to a wide host of supernatural beings in norse mythology and later folk lore. For example, the Midgaard Serpent is also considered a Jotun. Giants are just one type of supernatural being that go under the term "Jotun". Furthermore, a host of the giant stereotypes came to existence after the rise of modern religions, where most of the old norse mythology existed as folklore, and especially the find of massive bones (which were later determined to belong to Mammoths) were by some people tied to the old norse tales among which frost giants (and other types of giants) took part, thus the giants took a front seat in how the stories were spread outside of the original folklore tales. In reality, Jotun can be compared to how for example the Japanese refer to supernatural creatures as "Yokai". These could be demons, fairies, etc. Or how one can say a shark is a fish, but not all fish are sharks. Jotun translated does not mean giant. This is simply something that every dictionary and common source (especially people at reddit) "gets wrong", or in other words they simplify it to what the general understanding of the word is, rather than describing its literal definition. It is also important to note the distinction between the old and the new (modern) interpretations of Norse mythology. Most of the typical folk lore was actually established in the middle ages, well past the time where Norse Mythology was a commonly practiced religion/set of religions. They are often simplified and recreated to be more easily recognizable, as the original tales from the old norse mythology was not well understood, and also often without common consensus. Thus it was attempted to make a common storyline, hence the tale of the gods became how it is, and the primary Jotun became known as enemies of the gods and generally depicted as giants/frost giants. But the main source we have to go from regarding the actual structure of norse mythology refers mainly to a collection of poems and scriptures, pieced together with the general folklore that has survived (through obvious alteration over time) - and all of this points to the Jotun being opposites of the gods, but not necessarily enemies by nature. The same goes for the depictions of the ancestry of the gods, as there are multiple credited variations of Odin and his lineage, as well as their conenction/disconnection with the jotun. Well anyways this is turning into a very long text that by now has little to nothing to do with my original comment nor the video itself :) But it's very interesting stuff, although one has to dive very deep through sources to find their roots. Luckily the Aarhus university in Denmark has an extensive department doing great research in norse mythology, helping to dig through some common misconceptions and modern alterations of the original mythology.

There was something that made the oil rig feel out of place to me, someone who is actually a fan of the sci-fi elements of the series, and I think I've figured out what it is. It looks too modern: it doesn't fit as something the inhabitants of Enroth would have made, because oil rigs are too technologically advanced (both in themselves and in the need for them) and it incorporates modern touches like a H-marked helipad they wouldn't have the context for, and it doesn't fit as something the Ancients would have made, because the Ancients consistently made things either very overtly high-tech (see things like the Lincoln, the Control Center under Melian or the defence robots in those two) or obscured the visible technological aspect entirely (see things like Corak and Escaton and the Tomb and Guardians of VARN).

Falagar is also in the intro of Might and Magic VI (Mainline, not heroes of) In terms of Forge, Might and Magic games up to and including VII (with some allusions in VIII) have ended with a little bit of a sci-fi setting. Forge was a big plot point if you took the evil route in Might and Magic VII, the quest would be you assisting them with the construct of what esstentially was a sci - fi 3D printer, which would have lead to the original Forge in Heroes of Might and Magic III. However, Heroes as a series has categorically lacked that aspect, so there was massive outcry when Forge was being worked on. That's why it got dropped and replaced for Conflux later. The Dark ending in Might and Magic VII was then rendered non-canon for the portal ending for the good route. Personally to me, as I first grew up with the mainline Might and Magic games, I always felt like something sci-fi, so long as it's not overused, is fine to co-exist as it's been part of its DNA since the very beginning. It just seems like most people either slept on the original M&M games, or didn't play far enough to see those elements unfold. My favourite 'Forge' mod has always been the one that uses the Juggernaughts as the rank VII enemy, as they were the bastards that got in your way while exploring The Lincoln.
@SilvesterBoots6 ай бұрын
It needs to be understood, that M&M does not have sci-fi as in usual robots, blasters, and cyborgs theme. It's advanced magic/technology, and manipulation of elements. It's magical fantasy sci-fi. M&M8 didn't even allude, it's plot was straightforward part of whole background. These elemental things in each base and heroes games were this in-universe planet/habitat creation/destruction forces.

Excuse me?! We are still waiting for full Forge release in HotA and now suddenly a whole new big mod appears that could potentially co-exist with HotA? I mean I'm happy, but also WTF.
@misioklesmisioklesowaty62163 жыл бұрын
Co-existing means two paraller h3 folders. One for HotA, second for DoR

Factory. HotA is not making Forge, they're making "Factory".

Is it really a mod for H3 Complete, like Hota, or is it for VCMI?

Yea, just ignore the orc with a Blaster also. Also the lore of the setting entirely.
@Zacharewitz3 жыл бұрын
in fact sci-fi elements are a huge part of whole Might and magic lore including heroes 3, but the devs said it will be possible to disable these types of things in game options so don't worry

Looks promising but the overall quality of graphics is much lower than HotA crew's work. I hope the creators of Day of Reckoning gonna choose quality over quantity

Just to clarify. "Tomten" is "Santa" in swedish 😉 but the creatures you referred to in nordic folklore is called gnomes in english and they are called Tomte (singular) and Tomtar (plural) in swedish. We have shit loads of different kind of gnomes. Like garden gnomes, house gnomes, forest gnomes and so on 😀
@LordInsane1002 жыл бұрын
We also use Jultomten for "Santa", "Jul" of course being "Yule" (for further clarification for those not familiar with Swedish, the -n ending is one of the counterparts to "the", so basically we call Santa "the Yule Gnome" or just "the Gnome", a bit like we usually call the North German Hansa as just the Hansa).

This looks really good, but most of the HOMM3 community plays HOTA. If only these 2 mods could somehow coexist.
