Heroes of Might and Magic III: Small Map 1v7 (200%)

An arena of death. 1v7, 200% difficulty and a Small map.
This video was a special request by someone from my Facebook group ( groups/66338.... This is definitely not the best game I've played. This match is littered with errors I've made for the entirety of the video.
Feel free to criticize my mistakes all you like in the comments section -- my excuse is that I was in a rush.

+RNorthex Yeah, that was a bit strange. I think the AI realized that with Shield attached to my Skeletons, the Troglodytes would do "insignificant" damage to the big Skeleton stack while receiving a much higher retaliation in return. So they probably decided to go for the 1-stacks instead since they could easily wipe them out with no immediate "consequence".

The mod permits for you to easily choose templates and set up teams, but I'm not sure I know what you mean when you mention "settings of terrain." Grande MeKick :) I really enjoy playing HoMM3, but in fact I enjoy watching you play and comment HoMM3 perhaps the same or more :) What you could expand on though is the comparisons between different same level units in different cities or regarding the combinations of different level creatures plus spells plus heroes - the most useful tactics and heroes. I actually liked you having demonstrated how outbalanced the Necro and Conflux cities were in terms of overpowering other cities / heroes. Generally a good piece of entertainment and good you keep to the HoMM3 as the other HoMM series are pretty crap IMHO. Will there be any videos as such with Horn of the Abyss non-authorised Russian MOD?

First of all, thank you! It's always encouraging to receive a compliment of approval like that. :) As far as future videos are concerned, the next one will be the Cove 1v7 video (which will, indeed, take place in Horn of the Abyss). I also have ideas for videos I could do where I outline the strengths and strategies I use for each of the different factions, but that is a video series that would come much later down the line (if at all). There is still a long queue of videos I have to do that I need to set aside the time for first.

The funny thing is with so many enemies you gain a big advantage. You get experience from fighting heroes so can level up much higher than is possible for the enemies.

+Mr Rhombus I've heard this point before, and it does make sense. But allow me to ask -- how many enemy AI players would you then consider to be the most difficult to fight against? 1? Consider how if you're playing a Small map with very few enemies, then it's a lot easier to clear them out with the few forces that you start with. Furthermore, you certainly won't have to worry about 6 other players that might come and take you out from behind at any time. Out of curiosity, have you tried playing both 1v1s and 1v7s (all grouped up) against the AI?

TheKnownWorld Oh I'm not saying by any means this is easier than any other amount of bots. Merely that this is perhaps the reason it's possible at all. The bots in theory should make the game harder by a multiple every time one is added. However the effect I speak of is (I'd imagine) counteracting the increase in difficulty. I'd be very interested in how much.

First of all, I've done that in HotA (see the first Cove video) and also while playing Necropolis and Conflux. Second, I would argue that 1v7 on a Small-sized map is far more difficult than an XL+U map since you have virtually no time to prepare or build up. Yes, the AI have a chance to grow in an XL+U map as well, but human players are typically far more efficient in this manner.

Should have garrisoned the hero at the end of turn one (if leaving it at the captured dungeon as he did and not moving it north a few squares as self-critiqued) to regenerate to full spell points. Casting shield would have saved a good number of skeles while getting whapped by those evil eyes in the next fight. Those tiny early margins become huge by the end of the game with an interest-based strategy like skeleton farming.

Most people would kill me for saying this, but I find V better than III. So definitely recommended with expansions. I also quite enjoy VI and VII, although not nearly as much as V. They're all great games. Avoid IV, though.

Hello to you as well, and thank you! :) Of course, as someone who started off with Heroes III and who pumps out videos for the game, my opinion would be biased towards III so I don't think I have the right to make any recommendations. But I can tell you about my experiences with the other entries in the Heroes of Might and Magic series. I haven't tried Heroes 6 nor do I have an interest in doing so, but I have briefly played Heroes V. Long story short, I wasn't a big fan of the game, especially because of how disorienting I found the game due to the birdseye view combined with the 3D graphics. I hope this helps!

I remember playing Heroes VI at a friend's house, and the graphics were beautiful, but as you said, it was all a bit weird due to resources being hidden by landscape. 5 I played when it came out, I dont remember much of it. But none of these two had the complexity for Heroes III. Also, how do you use HD edition with Random maps?? I got mine, and it doesnt have Random map..

+Corey Johns hi, been there, done it. first download Wineskin, hero3, its latest patch, and HD mod. READ through before you try create a new Wine, it gets very tricky if you want a properly HD modded hero3 with decent resolution. First, you install hero3, do not exit the Wine after the installation, when the installation is done, use the same wine to install latest patch and HD mod, do not exit even then. NOW from the installation page of the Wine, you get buttons like "copy a folder inside" and "move a folder inside thingy", there was a button of "ADVANCE SETTING" or sth like that, in there you should be getting a page where you can change the exe of your wine and test it. So from there you change the EXE to HD launcher, TEST, in the HD launcher you create a new EXE called sth like Hero 3 HD, exit launcher, switch EXE from launcher to the newly created Hero 3 HD. THERE YOU GO

+Corey Johns however, it took me ages to get it done, cus you can't return to the advance setting after you exit and find sth wasn't right, then you have to delete and start over again. I'm not sure are you getting problems like mine when you say "it doesn't work that well", that is unable to right click so you cannot view creatures info? If so, then you gotta go thru the HD settings exactly like i did. when you get to the HD launcher, check the HD box, DO NOT check the system cursor and full screen boxes(when you play with the windowed version, on top there still is a "go full screen button", DO NOT click), and the most important part is actually the choice of the correct colour mode, unfortunately this is where my memory is getting a little blur, but try "32 bit true" first tho if i remember correctly, and since we are playing with windowed version, choose a resolution that you feel best fit to your own mac. Remember to create a HD EXE before exit HD launcher, and test it out on ADVANCE SETTING. If it doesn't work fine, switch EXE back to HD launcher and set it again with another colour mode or resolution until it does(i don't wanna scare you or anything but my mac actually went black screen when i went with full screen 16 bit original) To check if the HD mod is properly installed, test it on ADVANCE SETTING, find a map, before START, you get more hero info than the original mode, after START, you get more buttons when heroes are trading. You don’t need a mod for this. Just go to the “mp3” folder in your Heroes III directory and rename one of the existing music files in that folder (any new file name will do, as long as it doesn’t conflict with one of the other .mp3 files). Then, get an .mp3 file of the music that you want, give it the old file name, and put it into the “mp3” folder. For example, if you want to replace the Grass theme in Heroes III (originally titled GRASS.mp3) with the one from Heroes II (let’s call this GRASSII.mp3), you’d have to give GRASS.mp3 a different name like GRASSIII.mp3 and then rename GRASSII.mp3 into GRASS.mp3. I hope this helps!

This is one feature of the HD mod (which is downloadable at sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/) known as Replayable Quick Combat. Once you have the HD mod installed, just toggle on Quick Combat while you're in a match and Replayable Quick Combat should work for you.

+C Luo (Dexter) I'll just tell you the ones I know here -- by the way, they're called "heroes" and "creatures", not "champs" and "creeps" (-cough cough- League player! -cough cough-). :P In the HD mod, CTRL+Click creates a stack of 1 unit, SHIFT+Click splits half-half, and ALT+Click groups up all units of one type (i.e. all Master Gremlins) into one big stack. V views the entire map, D causes your current hero to try and dig for the Grail, P reveals the revealed Puzzle Map so far, I shows Scenario Information, W is useful for Wait in combat, and Space Bar allows you to step on the spot you're already on again (such as if you're on a Subterranean Gate). S and L, in the Adventure Map, allow you to Save and Load the game. These are generally most of the keys I need to use, on top of the ones you've listed already although you could always try hitting random keys on the keyboard to see if you can find any more. ;D

How do you make the game "propose" the result of the upcoming fight before you actually fight it? Is that some sort of simulation? Can you "accept" the results and therefore skip the fighting part?

This is a feature called Replayable Quick Combat which can be toggled on if you have the HD mod (downloadable from sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/). With Replayable Quick Combat, the game will automatically try and play fights out for you as if it were in control, and then present you with the losses that it sustained from playing out the battle itself. Then you get to choose whether or not you want to skip the battle by accepting the results or manually play out the fight yourself.

I can understand why you may be unhappy with Galthran's removal, but as I'm sure you can imagine, his early game tempo was just far too strong for a faction that many players considered top tier. At least with Thant "and others" (I'm not quite sure what other Necropolis hero in HotA would be worth considering as a starting hero over Thant or Galthran), they had a slightly tougher time getting ramped up since their armies weren't nearly as strong as Galthran's 3-stack Skeleton start. Furthermore, Thant's Animate Dead was quite powerful, but it also took time to boost his Spell Power and Knowledge before he really started to shine.

@@TheKnownWorld True, maybe with the balance to the hero's starting creature he'd be fine, obviously he was broken in the early game before Hota. I do like Tamika; Asilinn and Septienna, although they don't reach up there with mystics buffed Thant.

+Rage Zone I'm glad you asked! To answer your question, the different battle music is neither edited nor a mod -- well, it's kind of an indirect mod to the game, I suppose. The music files for Heroes III can simply be replaced in the .mp3 folder of your Heroes III directory, which is what I did for the "different" battle music you heard (which is actually one of the battle music themes from Heroes II).

I do not believe that you can add new music files as another "shuffle option" in combat. You have to either replace OR RENAME (I'm emphasizing this so that you won't just overwrite the old music) some files so that the new ones will fit. For example, the battle music I renamed was originally something like COMBAT01.mp3. After I changed it to COMBAT05.mp3, I was able to add in the Heroes II combat music as COMBAT01.mp3. Does that make sense?

Oh, I see what you mean. A plugin for "HW rules" has automatically been packaged with the HD mod as of the most recent updates. With this plugin, you have access to several features that can affect gameplay. You can toggle whether or not certain map objects like Obelisks or Cartographers are present on the map. The "Always 2nd hero stack" option would cause your starting hero and new heroes at the start of each week to always come with a second stack of units. Rebuild Mage Guild allows you to pay resources to acquire new spells for a specific tier. Many of these features are meant to be used for competitive play and can be fun for casual use, but if you're unsure as to what they do, then you're better off making sure that HW rules is disabled before you start a match.

Shift + Click to either balance the number those creatures in all stacks with at least 2 creatures or make another stack (still balanced numbers). Note that it won't do anything if you click a stack with 1 creature. Shift + Ctrl + Click to make as many as possible stacks of 1 creature. Ctrl + Click on the stack with 1 creature to add it to a stack with more than 1 that creature. Had time to try random combinations 😅

I think you are misunderstanding that "glorious victory" screen. That is a feature of the HD mod called "Replayable Quick Combat" that will play out battles for me beforehand. Replayable Quick Combat has the AI simulate the battle on my behalf and present to me the battle results that it thinks would occur from a fight like that. On one hand, you might look at it is as cheating. But in reality, Replayable Quick Combat also saves you an enormous amount of time when faced with trivial fights such as 1 Angel vs. 1 Hobgoblin.

Oh ok I get it now. I never played HD mod and always played only very casually. Just finished watching and it amazes me in how much different strategies this game can be played, I never knew there is so much depth (for me the game was always just with standard difficulty buying all buildings at one town, building big army and so on :D). ummmm you could just reset scenario and the creatures would of changed plus you have a small chance of the walking dead being already built, just depends on how many resets of the scenario you need to take to do it plus your first fight: only way they was faster was due to the terrain if you took on any dung creatures underground they would gain speed

+Mian Bao With the HD mod, you are able to split/group up your units quickly by SHIFT+Clicking, CTRL+Clicking, or ALT+Clicking on a unit portrait. SHIFT+Click splits one big pile of units into two halves, CTRL+Click creates a stack of one unit of the selected unit, and ALT+Click groups up all units of a type (i.e. all Skeletons) into one big group. Or I could buy out more units and slaughter them into Skeletons if I so desired. But a Ballista? I'd say there were better uses for that Gold.
