**Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): ** *1. What mods do you use for Heroes III? / What version of the game are you using?* I usually play Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death with the HD mod (downloadable from sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/). Sometimes, I'll also use Horn of the Abyss (also known as HotA), but I'm not using it in this video. The HD mod is responsible for most of the features that you see in my videos. Note that the Heroes III HD mod is not compatible with Ubisoft's HD Edition on Steam. *2. How do I get your version of the game?* Shadow of Death is functionally the same (e.g. there are no gameplay differences) as the Heroes III Complete Edition, which you can get from www.gog.com/game/heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_complete_edition for relatively cheap. Horn of the Abyss can be obtained from download.h3hota.com/HotA_setup. *3. How do you see how far units can move in combat?* This is one feature of the HD mod (see FAQ #1) and can be done by mousing over a unit and holding down the CTRL key. *4. What are the hotkeys that you use?* This is one feature of the HD mod (see FAQ #1). The most frequent hotkeys that I use for army management are: - CTRL+Click to create a 1-stack - ALT+Click to group up all units of the same type into one big stack - SHIFT+Click to split a stack into two halves - CTRL+SHIFT+Click to fill up all remaining empty slots with a 1-stack A full list of the hotkeys that the HD mod provides can be found at sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/eng/description/extended-ui. *5. How do you display the extended hero details while setting up a map?* This is one feature of the HD mod (see FAQ #1) and can be done simply by right-clicking on a hero's portrait while selecting a hero. Note that Single Scenarios do not support this feature. *6. How do you step on the same square your hero is on? / How do you access Water Wheels, Windmills, Mystical Gardens, Two-Way Monoliths and Subterranean Gates without moving your hero?* Pressing the Space Bar key will cause your hero to step on the same square that they are currently on, allowing them to move through Two-Way Monoliths and Subterranean Gates at will. The Space Bar key can also be used on Water Wheels, Windmills, Mystical Gardens, and other map objects. Note that this feature is only available in versions of Heroes III that come later than Restoration of Erathia, meaning that this cannot be done in Ubisoft's HD Edition on Steam. *7. How can I get my unit animations in combat to be as fast as yours?* To get accelerated unit animations, download crAnim.txt from heroesportal.net/getfile.php?file=/files/information/16/Cranim.txt and put it into the Data folder of your Heroes III directory. *8. Why not play a match without rules?* I plan to do a no holds barred playthrough in the far future, but there's a specific approach I would use for such a match that I don't want to showcase at this time.

It's such a pity that 3DO didn't fix those things back when the company still existed, it was so obviously OP that it shouldn't spoil the game for more than those few months when the"dude, there's Phoenix city and it ROCKS!!!" aspect sold the game. There are four things that I'd love to see balanced: 1) Necromancy 2) Diplomacy 3) Conflux 4) Dimension Door should have been Fire Magic spell. I think that the first three points are obvious, and the fourth doesn't need much explanation. Fire Magic has no powerful adventure spell, Air Magic has two, and Fire DD would be in accord with Hell Gate.

Just to clarify, it's true that I haven't had the time to do my own playthrough of the campaigns, but I've actually wanted to do them for a while now. I do think it would be pretty fun to go through the campaigns at my own pace or using an approach that I see fit :) With regards to the claim that I would "rather reference to Meridian", I would actually prefer to have my own playthrough of the Heroes III campaigns if I had more free time. But since I don't have that content on my channel, right now I would rather redirect viewers to someone who has done them (and done them well).

Yes. In fact, one of the things I would really love to see implemented in VCMI (open source engine for HoMM3) is interactive playback. I mean so it's not just video and audio, but that you can pause the playback and go look at towns or heroes as you wish. I think that would've been cool. I doubt that anyone will do it, but I think it would've been a nice addition.

Hello! I've had a number of viewers recommend this challenge to me already, but I don't feel like such a challenge would be as difficult as it sounds. In this challenge, I would probably just guess the general ballpark of any monsters and heroes that I come across and avoid any fights that I didn't feel that I could win. On top of this, I also have the next few videos lined up since I'm already planning to do the other four challenges in the Sinister Six. I remember playing it a long time ago with my dad (yes, I'm old) and we would sit far into the night or even pulling all-nighters doing 24-h HoMM 3 marathons. @@TheKnownWorld No promises necessary, really! :D These ideas might be a mere conversation starter for the chat or just an inspiration. Some of them might be very easy (for you, at least :P), so maybe they can be incorporated as one of the mechanics used in a challenge video? Of course, you may alter these challenges as you see fit :P --- Perfect Balance Challenge - you need to rush 8 heroes ASAP, however, you need to make sure they are as equal as possible, i.e. they have the same level, the same army, spells (Scholar much?) and similar stats (you might have to manage artifacts to try to balance them out). This slows down possible snowballing, as you cannot power level one or two heroes and merging your armies before battles is not allowed because... #equality, I guess? --- Easy As 1, 2, 3 Challenge - you can only use stacks: 1-stack of lvl 1 units, 2-stack of lvl 2 unit, ..., 7-stack of lvl 7 unit. That slows down your early game and you will have to wait for lvl 5, 6, 7 dwellings to accumulate 5, 6, and 7 creatures respectively (you can only buy out Angels, once PoG accumulates 7 of them); additionally, you can only use lvl 1 spells on lvl 1 units, lvl 2 spells on lvl 2 units, ..., lvl 5 spells on lvl 5 units (no spells for lvl 6, and lvl 7 units) --- Completionist Challenge - before attacking AI's, you have to uncover the whole map, discover all Seer's Huts, and complete their quests - Artifact Merchants might be useful here! --- No, God! No God, Please No! Noooo! Challenge - this one is silly but could make for a "fun" Christmas special. You can use whatever you want but, your movement is limited to one tile - on the map (hero movement) and in battles. If you wish, you might exclude ranged units or spells to make this one even more obnoxious. You can mellow this one down with rules, such as: you might make a full movement, if you dismiss a full stack (or take a shot if you do these kinds of vids, too :P) but you can use this "Lifeline" only 10 times or once a week... or something.

Walking deads are underrated. Just to use them on dirt with Sir Mullich having Necklace of Swiftness and Cape of Velocity, casting slayer and haste and suddenly you have speed 18 unit. Like archangel.

Long time watcher, first time speaker....I really like your videos and I just wanted to suggest an idea for a challenge that I accidentally stumbled across recently when I tried to play a game of HOMM3 and my mouse partially broke. Basically the challenge is you play a map on impossible but you aren't allowed to right click. Biggest things would be no seeing what your enemies have or the amount in a neutral stack. For some reason this was way harder than it sounded lol.

And for any who missed why more stacks is better for death ripple. Same number of monsters, but 7 stacks x 30 damage is a total of 210 damage; where if it was that same number in 4 stacks, it would be 4 x 30 = 120 damage.

It's nice to hear that my content has helped you develop your early game in Heroes III :) Not to burst your bubble, but I think it worth pointing out that I actually do reroll maps where I'm completely cut off from any other zone or where I'm blocked by an "unreasonably" strong guard (e.g. a Horde of Demons prevent me from leaving town on Week 1). Fortunately for me, this hasn't ever been the case when I'm recording a video, but this has happened to me in the past when playing by myself.

I'm happy to hear that you would want to see me give this challenge another try! To be honest though, I actually don't think I would stand a good chance even if I permitted everything that gets banned by my usual rules. Even when allowing spells like Slow or Dimension Door, the fundamental problem is still there - in other words, my army just isn't strong enough to survive getting hit more than once by enemy powerstacks (e.g. Archangels or Crusaders). Diplomacy might help, but I desperately need the map to be littered with Speed 3 units for this to be the case. I desperately needed Cloak of the Undead King in this match.

Ideas for new challenges: 1. "Peasants only". In editor you place near your first castle peasants hovel and this will be all your army - 25 peasants per week. This looks unbeatable , but actually it is not. I am just finishing the game ( and recording it as well, so there will be proof that it is totally possible ). As a modification: "Diamond golems challenge". This looks much easier, but I believe it is wrong impression. Because you have only 2 golems per week, so you can't have many heroes, can't hit-and-run, and what is even more important you can't resurrect them. 2. "No unit dies challenge". Even a single one tier one unit ( resurrected units don't count as died, and of course you can dismiss units if you feel they will not survive the next battle ). 3. "No money challenge". In editor you place event that before start of every day takes away all your money.

Here is a challenge idea for you: You are allowed to have only stacks with multiplier of 5 (i.e. 5, 10, 15 etc). If any stack loses some units during the battle, extras should be dismissed to fulfill the rule immediately (no reinforcements or army swaps/splits are allowed). The only exception is starting hero. He is allowed to have less units until he buys some reinforcements. If any of his stack exceeds the amount of 5, the first rule applies. Any extra heroes should be provided with reinforcements at the moment of hire. You are allowed to hire heroes to take their army, but they are not allowed to leave the town (unless they are going to be hired) nor stay in the castle to protect the town.

I really like that challenge, it was fun to watch for me. I totally get your frustration at certain point, because RNG can be a blessing or a bitch. He that is without sin, let him first cast a dimension door out. H3 is a brilliant game, but can be frustrating as well. It's totally okay imo, even if i heard "cloak of unbalaned king" so many times. That makes your plays real and emotional, which is one of reasons why i like to watch you so much. How about a noob challenge? No poor/rich man's tp - you can only surrender or retreat if attacked, or lost over 50% of your army in a fight you initiated. No hero chains - a stack can only be transferred once per turn. No one stacks, if you split a stack it has to be into equal groups.

This oddly reminds me of a time I was blocked in by Lots of Dendroid Soldiers early game without any ressources. Septi with 7 wrights and spamming Death Ripple. She managed to drive them down to 1 Dendroid Soldier before she had to run. But still a really fun challenge!

Perfectly fine try. Except the GRAVEYARD and the SCROLL u missed for like almost the whole game. xD Otherwise i had a great time screaming at my screen to finally notice it. But well the ending was pretty much what i predicted and expected with that title and your Rules for this challenge. Maybe not in exactly that way but i was pretty sure that it would be hard to win it. And with only 4:30 hours playtime it kind of spoilered no good ending or a Perfectly placed and ultra lucky run where everything would be perfectly placed for you. All in all i had a great time. I made it, it is possible! :-) Your usual set up, but each faction with different original town, just to be sure all key 3 speed units are presented, and my starting town was rampart, hero Ufretin ofc. I didn´t force all the rules, Rylands diplo was used twice on horde of dwarves, and when AI started with DD and TP, I started too. I didn´t dismiss units from heroes immediately, I was too greedy dwarf for this and rather sold them on near slave market. Poor elves, didn´t see that coming :-D No speed modifiers, this is crucial rule.

Map was ok for the purpose, quite unbalanced in some aspects, but there were some more towns of the right kind on the map and a graveyard too, this helped me greatly in defending dungeons later. Although walking dead are really trash, it was at least something. I still consider this challenge for undead as impossible. Dwarves and dendroids performed really great together, I will have one slow side hero with them from now on (instead of leaving them in the town mostly), this match teached me a lot overall. I pushed hard to get armor of the damned, but it really worked only with artillery or ballistics during sieges. These were very useful skills! :-O And resistance? Pure gold. I took castle and tower by surprise very early, and defeated dungeon and stronghold AI in month 2-3. Last three AI were too strong no matter what, even inferno, so a I had to use my pack of carefully prepared glass cannon heroes (lvl 3-5, spellpower 15-20) with one stacks, and keep them busy, bite pieces from their armies, lure them into sieges etc. This was awful part of the game, almost magic+retreat only, and with some save/loads - nothing presentable. You can do better for sure ;-) At least final battles were decent. It took a lot of time for XL map, then again, it is done. I´m very happy about this. Never more :-D

I do have one question.. I use the gog complete version of the game plus the HD mod.. When I start any game with necropolis, the necromancy skill doesn't seem to work! No matter how many enemy units die I don't get anything in return.. Is there any option or something I'm doing wrong?

Would like to see another speed 3 run, maybe use diplo since it is not that strong if u cna only get some more speed 3 units. I am also curious if rampart with dwarwes and dendroids actually has a chance of winning this challenge .

You're definitely not the first person to bring up the idea of giving Speed 3 Units Only another try and I can see the appeal of redoing this challenge under different circumstances (e.g. by using Rampart or by removing some restrictions that I'm playing by). As I explained in my post-game remarks though, I doubt that having Diplomacy and playing as Rampart would help me much, and I didn't want to deviate from my original ruleset anyway. Besides, at this time, I've done enough attempts at this challenge that I want to move on to trying other challenges.

Great challenge. Great video. I will try it with a small variation! I will use hota (because tower heros always start with golems), tower and golems. I won't dismiss the gremlins and other free units I get, but keep them in town to use them for hero dismiss and for short life one stack hero's that will go pick up something. Never for intentional battle though. (If I get to be attacked will let the comp kill them). Will go for two Main heros, if lucky solmyr and neela. Otherwise solmyr and whoever I'm lucky to get. Spellwise, I will use the same limitations with you unless the game is near end and I'm clearly winning it. Then I'll start using dd and town portal to finish it up. I will use implosion if I get it and I will consider slow if not expert and in rare occasions like against golems :-/. Resurrection and animate dead won't be useful for most of my game but I will use in the rare occasion I have living or zombies in my army. Most probably on a side army defending a town. Will be very hard to make a power stack but golems are easier to keep alive. The golem factory is problematic too... Can't hit that early in the game. I have in the past played a golem only challenge but of course I upgraded them to iron which makes a world of difference and used all spells and artifacts. HI, I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for that. One day I was able to watch it for maybe 8 hours straight. I think it was siege. Heroes III is my most favourit game and I play it already 18 years. With my friends we sometimes meet, do bbq or cook something good and play the game along in a hot seat as years ago. For maybe first year, I played only Arrogane map with upgraded units only, as I did not know, how to change a map or how to upgrade units. So based on my history, I have a challenge for you and I think it could be different game, as you do not upgrade units that much they deserve. So Upgraded units only. If you would be interested, based on your play style especially in a game Necropolis, I would like to see you playing as defensive as possible, meaning for your captured towns. So the rule could be for example, that you would have to build in each and every captured town building every day and defend as much attacks possible. Yeah and one thing, I totally understand your hero management, but I hate it :D. It is so disrespectfull just to dismiss them all the time. Sorry, I just had to :D.

Pro tip: if u can't see the flag of a certain hero and want to know what color is he, you can actually right-click on him and look at the colour of the border around the hero info box

Yeah, the Chad Crusader definitely did his thing on this one, lol. While I can see why you might think Berserk would've helped me out here, I banned it as part of the additional rules I play by. Besides, I don't think that Berserk would've helped me very much given how this playthrough went - I don't even get turn priority on my Walking Dead, so I highly doubt that Berserk would've saved me in this case.

Buy it on GOG. The Uplay version does not support HD mod.

No! Don't get the Ubisoft's HD Edition - this is a total ripoff and isn't at all compatible with the fan-made HD mod! Contrary to what you might think, Uplay doesn't at all have the "Complete Edition", but instead only has "The Restoration of Erathia". Ubisoft's HD Edition should not be mistaken for the fan-made HD mod and lacks much of the content present in the version of the game that I'm using. Buy the game from GOG instead at www.gog.com/game/heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_complete_edition. You'll thank me for this later :P
