Heroes of Might & Magic IV - A Review

When I was a kid, I felt sad after hearing about 3DO bankruptcy, even sadder when the franchise is in Ubisoft's hands. To me, this game is really a revolution, it surely changed a lot from its predecessor, and I enjoy that changes. That's how unique Heroes IV delivered to us. I'm still playing the game recently, and yes, the soundtracks are amazing. Thank you for making this video

NWC and Westwood these were the days. NWC did really well with Heroes2-4 and M&M6-8 all of these games while beeing different genres, took place in the same world Antagarich, which was just blown up for funsies, exactly like the publisher and the studio. Maybe foresight.

Very nice video. I'm happy that HoMM 4 is getting more recognition now. I remember that when it first came out it got a lot of criticism because it was very different to HoMM 3. However a group of my friends and I played it a lot in Hot Seat and we still think that it was the best version of HoMM for multiplayer games. Turning heroes into units on the battlefield was a nice touch and class specific skills and advanced classes gave the game a lot of flavor as well as made the game feel more diverse in how you can play it, at least in my opinion. Thank you, and keep up the good work!

My late brother and i used to play this game in hotseat a TON. It was his favorite in the series as he loved being able to fight with and control his hero. He also liked that each faction had their own spell schools. I myself have created a few huge and grand maps for us to play together, but sadly he passed away back in 2018.

As you mention, the game has a bunch of flaws, it was experimental (arguably overly so, the lack of upgrades just feels like a step back), and it just overall lacks a lot of polish - BUT goddamn I love the game. Its artstyle is really goofy, true, but in a way it's a throwback to Heroes 1-2, which were also very bright and exaggerated and silly. It's endearing, in a way. The campaigns in the base game are absolutely phenomenal experiences, with the best writing Heroes has ever had, and the music is fantastic for the most part (I was never a huge fan of the operatic themes, but I recognize that this is just a personal opinion). What's ironic about the music is that a lot of it is actually sampled, not original compisitions, since Paul Romero was reportedly on a REALLY tight time schedule and the game as we know just didn't have a great budget.

I loved this game as a kid. the 2 things that frustrated me the most were your heroes getting downed, also the tiles being hard to navigate it made movement so hard to predict in combat. outside of that i loved almost everything new.

This is my childhood game and the favourite of the series. The soundtrack is my favourite ever. One thing I would enjoy now that we have advanced AI voices is a voice acting mod for the story pop-ups.

I might be wrong but the broken texture is the display combat grid this game uses since it has been a feature since 2 but in the older games it was hex grid over the square ones here

Heroes VI went full offline recently which made experience of playing it much better. I'm playing it atm and must say... I do enjoy it! I finally liked it after three or four tries (throughout last 12 or so years xd). Previously I was able to play VI no more than 5 or 10 hours and now I have almost no enjoyment-breaking problems with it (except bugs - VI is still heavily bugged). Heroes IV will (most likely) always be my fav of the series and I find many curious innovations in VIth part just like in IVth one (while for example VII or V took more conservative approach, wanting to be more III-like).

Its a shame NWC did blew up my favorite world setting "Erathia" like this. I absolutely loved both Heroes3 and Might and Magic 7 and i did play Heroes2 and MM6 first, Enroth was fine, but Erathia was just amazing with its unique landscape and political factions. Even though Heroes4 has more text, i could not enjoy it because of how my favorite world was destroyed to make room for these chaotic realms of Axeoth with their mixed up 2 factions in 1 town. Inferno and Necropolis should really be its own thing. I always loved the idea, how undeads and demons fight against each other in this kind of civil war of evil powers. All gone with this game. Apart from that it was pretty fun game, especially how the skill sytem and heroes were done. Its also a shame that NWC never reformed again, the only other studio, that was as impressive with creating rpg and strategy games of character, was perhaps Westwood.

Good video and I agree with many points you make. Its a bit sad this game did not come out a few years later with a proper budget. I love the music and there are some great things about it. At the same time visually its stings the eyes due to when the 3D modells where made. It was still early in 3D and they had low budget. I do ocme back to this game at times, but I honestly prefer 3 since it looks, plays and feels more complete and finished. With that said its a good game and it has the franchises best soundtrack. Personally my biggest gripe with this game is not the points I made about visuals, I can accept that and still enjoy games. The issue I have is the heroes... I was not a fan of them being on the battlefield, nor did I enjoy units being able to moove freely or such. While it made the game more easy I think it removed strategic flavour and decisionmaking. Do I go there and gather resources or do I push forward and attack this. There was just so many things you could do and that decision making was part of it for me. Still I enjoy 4 to this date and play on occasion.

I Agree with prefering heroes 3 as it still Holds up even today but one thing i can always give homm4 is that its diffrent even if its not Well balanced and comparing it with the modern games which just tries to emulate homm3.

Best in the series. I played ton of 3 and 4 not others (5 just a bit and i do not like it same for others) and i have preference for 4. Actually i do not like playing 3 anymore because it feels shallow to 4. Games is definitely not polished but still better game then 3.

i have moved on from HOMM to AOW3 and Planetfall. I feel AOW3 is superior especially since two human army can be in the same battle against another opponent, amazing fun.

Finished all campaigns of 4 and remember them after 20 years. Don't remember anything from heroes 3... Also none other heroes had this feeling of hero power progres

It's just too bad that this game was made when 3DO was going bankrupt. They had some serious budget cuts and the game had to be released months before it was finished. The expansions were especially cheap. JVC never should have allowed New World Computing to be bought by 3DO. 3DO was such a poorly managed company and they broke their promise to JVC to make an MMORPG.

HoMM4 is a nice single player game if you like games that have no flow or balance but have a nice story and like the best music ever created... HoMM4 is a pile of shit for 1vs1 and this is why noone played it and it was not accepted by the community - simple as that (;
