This 81 year old Fire-fighter worked on Squad 8 in early 1970s ,when we had Squad 2 and 8 and they were the only thing close to a heavy rescue. Our 1st rig was a 1955 Ford 1 ton with compartments and 3 men on the tailboard, some hand hydraulic tools etc. Our next was a Gerstenslager all enclosed large rig with more equipment and it was painted yellow while all other rigs where white. The white color on Denver rigs goes back to the late 1890s. Man it sure got cold in the winter on the old squad tailboard flying down the road because the center walkway directed the wind straight down the middle into the face of the junior man, which I was. But I would love to relive it. Those were the good ole days.

Pat mentioned the HAMER (R22, at 9's) and collapse rig (R24, at 1's), so here's a little more DFD trivia for you, Mike: Both those rigs--plus Rescue 1's previous ride (R23, a 2008 Pierce Velocity HDR nearly identical to R29 except the old rig had an 84" cab instead on the new one's 70"), the department's first four Velocity pumpers (E80-84; they were running Enforcers prior to that, and 30's has the last of that lot), and two of the last aerials DFD spec-ed on a Lance chassis (T46 & T47)) were all bought for the city by the DNC when Denver hosted the 2008 Democratic National Convention. US Secret Service security protocols state that no vehicle traffic is allowed into the secure space around one of their protectees once they've established a perimeter, so the DNC had to pony up the money to provide DFD enough equipment to cover an all-hazards response to at least a second-alarm level, and that couldn't leave the confines of that perimeter until after the convention concluded and their package left town. R22 and R24 are still front-line rigs; all the others are in reserve.

Heh, fun fact, in germany there is sometimes the same problem when older firestations get new vehicles that became bigger because the standarts changed and then suddenly "Ooops, its too big for the garage..." XD I remember that in one fire station they had to lower the floor around 4 Inch so that the new engine could fit into the station. (Only as a temporal solution till the new station was build.)

Thank you so much for the walk through of a Heavy Rescue that Denver has. The ( CDL) is important to have but the Fire Department does Emergency Response ( code runs) so training must be geared to that. The FD does a better job at responding code, like the Driver said the Narrow streets, very important than just say, backing through cones to Loading dock, that ( CDL) driver school teach, the Log sheet for driver hours, prep for taking ( CDL) test. FD doesn't need to go through Driver Log hours for inspection. Very nice redundant Equipment set up in Rescue Rig. The Gas and Battery power combination of TOOLS. Like the way you can get in back area from front seating area.

I was stationed at Ft. Carson, Co. Went to Denver for a weekend. Ended up visiting the Downtown station. It was near Denver 1 Place. The skyscraper that was shown on the Dynasty tv show in the 80's. . Lessoned learned. Don't visit a Dnever Fire Station when the Denver Broncos football team is playing. This rescue looks pretty good.

@franklewis69432 жыл бұрын
Hush, now. South Metro is getting one, too--it's going to 34s to replace both Tower 34 and Rescue 34 as a dual-purpose rig, and responding in tandem with Collapse 45 on technical rescue calls--but it's still well over a year out because Pierce is dealing with the same global supply chain issues as everybody else. As for Greeley, Ladder 5 is much more interesting than Ladder 1's tiller.

@@jacksonhartwig7206 Seriously, give the boys at 5's a call and have them show you around the ladder. The tiller is the pluperfect example of American fire apparatus, but Greeley's Ladder 5 casts old idiom, "10 pounds of shit in a 5-pound bag" in a positive light.

Depending on your state. Some do require a CDL. mine doesn't but some of our individual counties or departments do.
