Debated on getting my dog microchipped for a while but hesitated. What prompted me was finding an abandoned deceased cat on the street a few weeks ago. I brought her to the local animal hospital. They did not find a microchip. I posted online trying to find the owner, but Jane Doe kitty was still never claimed. Broke my heart knowing that anyone who loved her could not find her. Sharing this story to help anyone who is still on the fence about getting a microchip. Getting my dog microchipped today.

It subcutaneous. The skin layer does not have muscles or other activities that would move the chip. Sort of like getting a tattoo. The ink stays put.

It's not that bad, I got an RFID implanted in my wrist. Your dog might not be too happy at the time, but they'll be glad to see you after they're identified at the shelter.

Normally a yearly fee isn't required to register your information. This is all that you need to do for your information to be on file for whoever recovers your pet. You can often pay a yearly fee for access to extra services, but in my opinion this is a waste of money. Of course, the service providers will try to mislead you to make extra sales. Also, they'll often incentivize their call center employees to convince you to register, which may result in sketchy or dishonest behavior by the representative. Many of the players in this industry are rather scummy, since the profit margins on the hardware itself have been thinned out by competition.

We do not typically use alcohol when placing the microchip. It is something that to my knowledge is usually done by the veterinarians. I'm not sure if it is accessible for breeders or even pet owners to do. But usually we will place it in the subcutaneous layer betweenthe shoulder blades

Yes, they sell chips to breeders, and fairly cheap, pinching does help, I've actually done a few shots myself because that way it's done and you don't owe the vet visit on top of like 10 shots, but not everybody can handle giving their pets these shots with how big some needles are, they are afraid of hurting them or theirselves, I have a pup with seizures and have to medicate and yes it's scary but after a few times you learn what each pet likes better and no they are not all the same so dnt expect to charge at 1 and then do the same with the next because some are runners, some pass out over the sight if they see the needles

the chip is around the same size as a grain of rice (hence the size of the needle), but no, the chip is in fact solid and will sit underneath the skin without moving around. The idea of it is somewhat similar to an eftpos card, where the scanner picks up the signal the chip sends out, and provides an identification number, which is linked to both the animals and owners details. Most modern chips can be read by overseas readers. There is a worldwide standard now. A vet in another country can verify your pet is chipped.

They are not always reliable. I have had some of those fall out of the dog, migrate, and some simply don’t get picked up by a chip scanner. You want to purchase chips which have an anti migration feature, are LARGE as you can put in that particular pet, and don’t reuse old chip numbers

All chips can migrate. That's why you must fully scan the pet. Always scan the chip prior to implant and again afterwards.

It depends what country you live in. In the UK you have to be 'trained'. In Australia they can be implanted by "authorized implanters." I guess you will have to do some searching, or contact your state/country vetrinary board.

I think i need a little more info? I noticed you kind of pinched up the fur at the top of the shoulder. Is that just to make sure its down in the tissue enough? Is it safe to chip a puppy thats 6-9weeks? Is it best to do it at the top of the shoulder blade or between the shoulder blades?

They will tent up the skin to make sure it's actually going into the skin and not tissue they don't want it going into. They also do this for vaccines because most of them are supposed to be given in the skin but not into the muscle.

If your dog happens to get out for your cat. And they get lost then this is a implanted device that cannot be taken off like a collar. If the Humane Society or animal control fix up your cat or dog they will scan them to see if they have a microchip which is registered to their owner.

I did it for my cat, she is an indoor cat but is very curious of the outside. I was always scared that if someone opens the door, she could run out! Its like a safety. We are also getting a female pittie in a couple of days and she will also be chipped! Pitbulls has a bad rep so if she ever gets to a shelter or rescue, she wont be killed.
