I think the most fascinating bonsai are the ones that would have been regarded as useless but were discovered and helped to fulfill their potential by someone who saw the potential in them! Commercial trees with standard forms you see everywhere.

That Maple wanted to be rescued. That is why it was growing branches so long, waving then in the breeze, hoping to catch the eye of an artist of the plant variety. So when the waving branches brought someone {U} near, it's lovely Turtle Back Nebari would be noticed, and it would have itself saved! {pardon my imagination, it does run off at times} yet it is how I see it.

I am a beginner in bonsaï (I have more young tree than bonsaï yet) at 44 years old, but every time I see a herons bonsaï video , I tell to me, do what you want with your tree. I watched many other videos of yours today and also this Mr Chan. Thanks for showing us and emphasising that plants just want to live and grow under almost all conditions. One kills them rather with too much care, but if you let them be, they grow. Propagation on a budget as well with air layering, ground layering, seedlings in the ground, cuttings, root cuttings, just everything can make a new plant. Nothing of that snobby stuff you see elsewhere with the "bonsai master" with his 30K EUR sheers in a leather case, but how you can do beautiful trees as common folk.

Always thinking outside the box and not always to tradition, that is the beauty of your work. I collected 3 trees from the Volcano and 2 the buds are flushing so I am very excited for my Yamadori, both Douglas Firs, also my Madrona are doing well, planted one with a baby Doug Fir I grew from seed since they both should share the same ectomycorrhizae and be a PNW forest group.
