I love willow as bonsai, so many different ways to experiment growing these trees. I agree, occasional die back at times seemingly for no reason. We have an extensive variety selection for cuttings here.

Dear sir. I have that book in English. It was the first book I had ever read about bonsai. The most amazing thing is that it was given to me by my mom and dad. They wrote me an inspirational note on it and sign it individually. It's one of my greatest treasures. My father passed away a couple of years ago and I recognized the picture of the willow tree. You inspired me to try bonsai and still, I have some but I'm just ammature. I realized that you are coming to Canada and I would love to meet you. You inspired me like my father. Can you please post where and when you will be in Canada? I want to meet the man that also made me love the art of bonsai.

You do have a precious memory. I began bonsai this year . My parents have passed on , but this is how I continue my connection to my mom and the love and wisdom she imparted to me for art and nature. In memory of my dad, my plants listen to operas, jazz, and classical. He dreamt of being a maestro. Training and growing Bonsai is very much like becoming a maestro , although we can’t hear , it all plants sing vibrationally when they grow. Peace to you , good therapy , and health. I picked up a deal at home depot for $80 , a braided willow 3 1/2 feet tall. I will make my own cement pot for it. Right now, I’m cramming in bonsai knowledge as fast as I can.

These videos are meant to be in the background on my 2nd screen while I work. But I keep on watching them more than working! Thank you for such informative, yet soothing content! I've learned a lot. And while learning about a lot of the nuances of bonsai, I've also learned to be less scared of messing up. That parts of trees die. That experimentation is fine. It's both added interest and complexity to bonsai, while making it much less mysterious and intimidating.

I have several large willows and the one thing you have to watch is that they grow so fast they choke themselves into the wire, so you have to keep an eye on them

Leaving wire on for a season or two too long adds character to the trunk. It’s adds an interesting line when the wire bits the tree

I have a grey willow in my garden, I dug it out of a drain behind where I work. It was either bring it home or they were gonna kill it before it got too big. So now he’s getting used to his new pot out my back garden. It’s a lot nice than his old home.

I love willows. A park near me has willows along the river. They have been there since I was small. I am now 57. In the last 5 years many have broke in the wind because branches too heavy. The local council don't trim them

I'm trying to train a willow group, just experimenting with what I have. It was only later I found out about the weeping issues in bonsai, and I know you can also use guide wires for a more natural shape, but I saw this tree in the first book (and it inspired me to have my own willow), and I'm really looking forward to seeing how it develops :)

well well well... Peter..at the back end of july this year i planted a part of a branch from a willow (not very old)...and put it in a foot long pot that was not used, in hope of developing it into a forest, so 3 month later and it has shot up & is about 3 ft high...i knew they are a vigorous tree but i didn't expect it to be as big as it is...love it, all the best to you and yours, take care, Gordon Wigham.

I love willows, thank you for mentioning them! Well suited for some quite unusual styles, many interesting species around, often mixing across the taxons, very playful material! Also, they can teach people, new to bonsai, how to deal with the cycle of life and death of their trees, because they are so willingly diebacking for numerous reasons and you must learn how to accept it. And on the other hand, willows are so vigorous and eager for life, rooting from everywhere, sometimes even when you put cutting upside down. Would be lovely to have an episode with some Alder trees. Are there any in your nursery?

Willows actually got me into bonsai, because of how incredibly fast they root and grow. On the other hand, they can get scorched so hard they can look like burned by a flamethrower. They need to be kept in a slight shade and bathing in water during summer, or they will not make it. I lost several nicely-shaped cuttings, that would make great bonsai because I forgot to water them for one day during 40°C heatwaves. They regrew immediately back from the bottom, but all the nice shapes gone.

@@yummy8074 i had 6 cuttings, 1 survived and then he got spider mites so i put him outside sprayed him down and left him out, figured if he survived great if not it just wasn’t meant to be. He’s thriving on my front porch gets a good watering almost daily, just moved into a bigger pot and the roots were insane! Now I’d like to bring him back inside but i think it’d probably kill him 🤦🏼‍♀️😅
