Thank you.... 🙏 😔 🙏 Dr. Chan, this is a very educational video, it showed you thinking ahead as you made your cuts. That was very informative to see you designing the tree as you wired and even made space for a pad that had not sprouted. No slight of hand just knowledge. I like the Dawn Redwood and have acquired a small one, not to be small long. I am slowly viewing your entire video library, slowly, there so many. 🙏 🖖 🙏 😔 🙏 🙏 🙏

A philosophical question: the general idea is to mimic nature in miniature. Branches of the redwood naturally reach up; why train them to resemble trees with branches reaching out vs up?

Large bonsai isn't a contradiction, it is just like a large miniature. Many trees being replicated are over 20m tall. 1:10 or 1:20 are perfectly acceptable scales. I particularly like them as centrepieces in small gardens

We do have a lot of Bald Cypress trees in the Southeastern US. Thankfully they are often planted along streets and on school campuses. I'd much rather see them than some non-native garbage like a Bradford Pear or yet another Crape Myrtle. I wish I had a nickel for every topped Crape Myrtle in my county. Thanks again for the awesome videos of your nursery!

I have about 5 of these that are 4 years old I had to pull after they went dormant. The deer rut on them with their antlers and smashed them down, ill need to replace them with this year's stock. If you're interested in them look up Rochester Redwoods on facebook. Very nice trunk size 5-8" in circumference. I like watching bonsai, I have no artistic talent.

Can you take the cuttings of the large root pieces and grow them out? I just brought in a triple trunk Benj. Ficus terra cotta pot, it's grown about 10 feet high, all 3 trunks are about 2 inches across, and I could not get it out of the ground! A root had grown through the hole and was anchoring it. :) Had to cut it off - about an inch thick. I found these lovely roots spreading 2 feet every direction! I'm giving them a chance to grow in a separate containers. Ultimately, I will air layer this and hope the final product is a 20-inch bonsai.

you also have to remember that Herons is a commercial nursery. The typ of earth Mr. Chan is using works just fine as he said time and time again and is relativly cheap. Akadama, Kyriu etc. is way more expensive, so potting one of these bigger trees would cost quite a bit. Good for a Bonsai enthusiast, but maybe "breaking the bank" for a nursery.

It is funny to think about the trend toward smaller bonsai, bcuz in America bonsai is this very niche hobby and serves no "function" when really evolved out of ancient landscaping techniques. I guess westerners developed shrubs and hedges to serve the same function instead
