Episode 7 of my painting guides for HeroQuest. In this episode I'll be speed painting some of the Goblins to demonstrate an easy method for batch painting your figures. I'd recommend not doing more than 5 at a time however as you don't want to become too overwhelmed.
HeroQuest published by Avalon Hills/Hasbro.
PDF guides for the monsters can be found on my Facebook & Instagram pages.

As always a great job, you really manage in an extraordinary way to bring to life all the miniatures you paint, thank you very much for all these video tutorials and also for having written them in the form of online articles 😊👍

Nice work! I watched this video with the same two miniatures in hand that I had already painted to compare. My only thought was, “dang, compared to those mine look like a first grader painted them with their fingers.”

Hi and thank you so much for those kind words Andrea 😊 The Heroquest videos actually marked the start of my KZbin tutorials after doing the monsters as a commission for a friend. I did however create PDFs for all of those that you can find pinned over on my Facebook page 👇🏻 facebook.com/BrushWoodminis I hope they help and please feel free to ask any questions that you may have.

You have the most beautiful HQ painting tutorials on KZbin! Any hopes of a video for the Dread Knight and Abomination in the near future?

Wow high praise indeed, thanks Edgar it’s greatly appreciated. I’ll be honest and say I’ve got no plans to film them as, like the Goblins, they’ve already got a PDF guide on FB and the website. However, also like the Goblins, never say never. Have you checked the guides out? Would a video be more helpful?

@@BrushWoodMinis I took a look at them last night. They are good resources, but I personally enjoy the videos for a variety of reasons. - They make good background noise as I paint. - As a novice I get to see the way you handle the brush when working certain details or mixing paints. For example I followed your wizard tutorial last night and seeing you make the spectrum of skin tones on your pallet when highlighting was super useful for me to get consistency as I worked up the shades. Its also useful for me to see how the paint is "going on" to the model and how the color builds up when applying additional coats, so I don't get discouraged when it looks off at first. - I also get to see the model at various angles which helps when I'm working with a pure black prime and brushed Zentihal highlight to ensure I don't miss any areas during base coating or highlighting detail. The Dreadknight on the PDF guide is gorgeous by the way.

I love this response, really helps me formulate how I set up shots and think around painting schemes. Thank you so much and for the kind Dread Warrior comment… I won’t 100% guarantee that it’ll happen (have a pretty full workload), but if I can fit them in I’ll see about getting a vid of each done, since you asked so nicely. 👍🏻 Glad they’re helping you along with your painting man and if you have any questions/queries feel free to hit me up on FB & IG. I always try to help where I can. 🤗

@@BrushWoodMinis Of course! I did have one question if you don't mind. How do you "portion" GW paints? My other paints like Vallejo come in droppers, but with the GW, I find it hard to make "exact" ratios. I tried using some disposable syringes, but that only works for a single color if you want to avoid contaminating paints. For now I'm just "scooping" the paint with my brush and then washing between scoops. But I want to be more exact mixing my GW paints.
@BrushWoodMinis
@BrushWoodMinis 2 жыл бұрын
Ah yes the old “GW pot vs dropper” conundrum. A lot of people buy cheap dropper bottles off Amazon and decant their paint into them but personally I’ve always viewed this a bit of a faff. Always found that if you’re careful and keep the GW ones clean around the rim then i have no problem. To that end when it comes to proportioning out, the “brush load method” is the way I go about it. It’s never going to be an exact science so I wouldn’t fret about absolute quantities, particularly when you’ll be adding water in to thin it down most likely anyway. Just stay roughly to what I say in the vids and it’ll be close enough.

Hello! I love your guides! Is there a reason your pdf guides are no longer available? The links on Facebook no loner work. Any chance of accessing them somewhere else? Either way, your work is amazing, man! Thanks for sharing your talent.

Is there a reason why you apply ultra matt/dull varnish with a brush and not use a spray can like many others do? I am searching a good protection for my painted miniatures and can't decide. I want something as save as possible to not ruin them
@BrushWoodMinis
@BrushWoodMinis 2 жыл бұрын
Hi bud, it’s purely an aesthetic choice for me. I prefer the dull matte finish as opposed to the gloss or satin sheen. Duncan Rhodes has recently done a really interesting video on YT discussing the different varnishes which may help inform your decision. 👍🏻

@@BrushWoodMinis Too bad, that’s okay though! I’ve learned a lot watching your videos and I feel comfortable painting minis just using the layering tips I’ve learned here. Also where can I find the .PDFs? I checked your website but I think it’s down?

Hey Edgar that’s great to hear, thanks. I’ll never say never re Frozen Horror but I wouldn’t hold your breath for it. The site is down yes, I find this myself and couldn’t really justify the cost against site visits/hits I was getting. The PDFs can all be found on a linked post on my FB page and also the relevant mini post over on Insta.

@@BrushWoodMinis No worries. Honestly if you take commissions, I'd send you a copy to paint. I have to thank you for these videos, I watched a lot of videos on KZbin on layering and painting technique, but I guess since you were painting something I was invested in, your videos really stuck with me. Your process of applying a base-coat, shading, and mixing colors and layering them for highlighting really connected with me. I went from producing beginner looking minis that took a long time, to minis that looking like that came from an intermediate painter, just after following your elf, dwarf and wizard tutorials. I am forever grateful for your series, because now I feel like mini painting is something I am good at, and am improving in.

You’ve just made my week with that comment Edgar, thank you so much. I’m so happy that my videos have connected with you and that you feel they’ve helped you progress. This is why I started to record my processes to begin with, I wanted to try and give back to this awesome community of painters out there. If you ever want any tips or advice then don’t hesitate to ask. You can find me on FB and Insta where that kinda thing would be more appropriate 🤗 I do occasionally take commissions on when time allows as it happens though I’m a bit too busy with other projects at the moment unfortunately. Enjoy the rest of your week. 👍🏻

shouldn't the shadow and mid tones in this style of painting be determined by the 'Zenthil highlight' not far in and already confused and you keep referring to the PDF's??
@BrushWoodMinis
@BrushWoodMinis Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for reaching out. The PDF’s are actually the original guides that I created for these figures long before I considered using KZbin. The video was a live action representation of them to basically recover old work. You can find those PDFs (and others for HQ) linked on my Facebook page. As regards the zenithal prime, that basically acts as a map for our light and shadows. However, just applying one colour over these makes them seem a bit ‘flat’ even with this technique. By instead using the prime as a guide and blending a shadow tone and highlight tone where appropriate we achieve a far greater sense of contrast and depth. Hope that makes sense.
