Herringbone cane Polymer Clay Tutorial

I made herringbone pattern!
It's not exactly a harlingbone pattern, but it feels similar haha
It's not difficult, but you have to elaborate ^^

Oh, I LOVE love LOVE this cane so much... BUT... WHAT am I doing wrong? I've tried to make this 4 times (in different colors).. when I get to the part of reducing it to cute the small pieces.. the ends sink in (distort like crazy) and I don't have enough cane to get all the pieces I need. I made sure that the colors I blended were the same consistency. It all reduced the same except for the ends. So upsetting and now I'm running out of clay to make more. I'm determined to make this.. so any help, hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I did mine with orange to purple that when blended made a glorious reddish color in the middle.. Love it but now I must do different colors. dammmmmmit. P.S. when I say "reduce" I mean lengthen it. I love how you don't use massive amounts of clay but can't figure out how you end up with so much when you're finished. You're magical.
