In this video tutorial, I take you through all the steps you need to create this fun and simple cane using a Skinner Blend. Choose whichever colours you like, and choose how you want the finished cane to look. If you watch through to the end I show you how to slice your cane and use the slices as a veneer, with lots of tips along the way.
The link for the free PDF is here, simply scroll down that page on the website to see it : www.fionaabel-smith.co.uk/free...

I have a measuring grid on my piece of glass that I use when working with polymer clay and it’s so helpful! These canes are beautiful. I’ve only tried a couple of times and was not successful. You sure make it look easy.

My first few canes when I was starting out were a mess, but we all improve as we go, so don't be too hard on yourself. Just relax, enjoy the clay, but above all, have fun.🙂

I wish I could like this tutorial more than once. I am revisiting it, and while I am not a caner, the instructions are so clear and offered with such encouragement that I will attempt this at some point. But the greatest pleasure is seeing things I did not see before and finding tips that maybe weren't relevant two years ago, but are now GOLD! As my skill set increases, I find that Fiona's tutorials are a treasure trove of information that enable you to take your creations from, "Meh" to "Marvelous". Thank you, Fiona for all you do.

@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals You are a TREMENDOUS instructor: with your help I made my first kaleidoscope cane. I subscribed within the first few minutes of watching my first of your tutorials because you said something so simple, yet valuable that I knew you would be a continuing source of information and support. My "boyfriend" likes you too. He got really excited while watching one of your kaleidoscope tutorials and I'm hoping to get him addicted to clay.

I like that grid showing the dimensions of the pasta machine. Well, the width. I made a skinner blend for the first time a couple of days ago and it was a bit too big so I had to cut some off on the edges.
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals

Yes the grid is always helpful, but of course you can also gently 'concertina' the clay so that it fits inside whatever sized pasta machine you are using. Sounds like you are having fun though 🙂

Your work is amazing and helped me understand a lot, thank you. Can you tell me what kind of pasta machine you use?
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Lydia. I get asked this many times, so I have this stock answer which I give, so I hope that helps :) The pasta machine I use is an Atlas machine, at home I use the 180 (a wider machine) and when travelling or on workshops, I use the 150. I have always used the Atlas machines and I find them very good for Polymer Clay. However, there are other very good makes, such as the Imperia machines, and of course those made specifically for use with Polymer Clay. Ginger Davis Allman, from The Blue Bottle Tree has a number of articles on Pasta Machines - thebluebottletree.com/?s=pasta+machines which may prove helpful in choosing a machine. Here is a link to an Atlas machine, (for reference only, as obviously there are many other places both online, and in stores where they can be found), and it is worth searching around till you can find a good deal on one. I hope that is of some help. www.amazon.com/Marcato-8320-Machine-Cutter-Instructions/dp/B0009U5OSO/ref=sr_1_3?crid=BPH5K7P26RQT&keywords=atlas+pasta+machine&qid=1556786279&s=gateway&sprefix=atlas+pasta+machine%2Caps%2C211&sr=8-3

I love listening to you. I’m new to this and am learning so much from you. I would really like more beginner videos. Have you made many? Also as you are in the U.K. it would be wonderful if you could advise how you store the PC. The foreign tutors are lovely but use things we cannot get hold of. Many thanks.
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals

Thanks so much Linda. I don't have 'beginner' videos as such, as I hope that most beginners and more experienced clayers alike can use the videos I do? Make sure as a beginner you are not being too critical of what you are making, we all start out with items we think are not as good as we hoped, but it is the old adage that practice makes perfect, and also that we are our own worst critics. As to the storage etc. yes, I use the paper craft plastic boxes to store my canes and clay in - you know the A4, A5 Peel off type boxes that the card crafters use. Are you a member of the British Polymer Clay Guild? They have a website - www.bpcg.org.uk/ and a Facebook page for members where this sort of question can be covered in detail, and you'll get lots of other interesting info on what to buy when etc, when people post questions on the page. I hope that has been of some help :)

How do you keep your canes from distorting when you cut them?
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 6 жыл бұрын
A mixture of a good sharp blade, and simply practice. Knowing exactly how much pressure you need to apply to get a good clean cut. All the clays cut slightly differently too, so you need to change what you do for each clay brand. If you can put the cane to one side for an hour or so, to rest it, that normally helps too. I have cut so many slices now, that it becomes second nature. I think people often underestimate how much repetition of the same action over and over again, means that we become more skilled. I wish there was some magic short cut, but I don't think there is. I hope that has been of some help? Thank you for your comment.
