Even though Jean Mitry was there a long time before MSTS, this is a great effort. Does justice to the locomotive AND the composer.

You did an excellent job with this. The only other thing you should do is acknowledge the orchestra and the conductor who did this version. Classical musicians would like to know. You truly did justice to both the music and the train. Thanks for all of your work!

@gomro I appreciate the comment. I actually made this vid having no knowledge of Mitry's short film. I now feel this is sacrilege since his work is so much better. However, I plan on re-making this with Railworks, since you can get better camera angles. This time I will be using the Flying Scotsman, or possibly Tornado.

@TheRealmsOfGold I had come to that realization a little after making the vid. I will be attempting a new version sometime in March, and I will take your advice about getting the train underway. Though I plan on using a different arrangement of the piece, which indicates that the engine is moving faster. I only made it gain inertia quickly because the Chapelon Pacific was a fast engine.

I agree with the comments re the wheel arrangement. At the beginning of the film (and elsewhere in the film) the locomotive pictured has a 'pacific' wheel arrangement (4-6-2 in Whyte notation - but 231 as the French would render it). This wheel arrangement later morphs to show a locomotive of 4-8-4 type. Most people wouldn't care, or wouldn't know, but why not stick to the script and get it right?

The way I see it there are two locomotives in this video, possibly heading in opposite directions.

Agreed Lego. If in doubt do it right, eh? But what with glaring errors in so many text books nowadays, plus rampant untruth in politics and the retail trade, it is almost as though humanity is sliding into a dreamy make-believe existence where words matter more than reality, and global warming and pollution is something we can safely ignore!

You should modify the description of your video. Honegger didn't actually write this to imitate a steam locomotive specifically-the title was changed to "Pacific 231" later. The locomotive was on his mind, but he was aiming more at the general feel of machinery and the Futurist concept that machines lived and breathed. Anyhow, great concept for a video. I wish the train didn't really get under way until 3:37-that's really when the music reaches inertia. But still, well done! :-)

Both are Chapelon engines.

Why does the artist show 4 drivers when the "231" in the title indicates 2 front giude wheels, 3 drivers and 1 rear guide wheel on each side of the locomotive? Also "pacifics" were almost exclusively over the road freight pullers.

I AM riding on a limited express, one of the crack trains of the nation. Hurtling across the prairie into blue haze and dark air go fifteen all-steel coaches holding a thousand people. (All the coaches shall be scrap and rust and all the men and women laughing in the diners and sleepers shall pass to ashes.) I ask a man in the smoker where he is going and he answers: “Omaha.” Carl Sandburg.

El video es bueno, pero la musica de Honneger jamás será representativa de un verdadero viaje en tren. El compositor hace que la máquina se detenga abruptamente, no hay desarrollo y por consiguiente es imposible hacer una buena película. Además carece de la energía necesaria. Mucho mejor es está música para una locomotora a vapor: "Steam a tribute to the creature born from iron, water and fire"
