After Michael Heseltine announced his retirement from the House of Commons and to tie in with the publication of his memoirs 'Life in the Jungle' in September 2000, LWT made a two part documentary telling his story. Produced by Alexander Gardiner and presented by Jonathan Dimbleby (who were both involved in LWT's Sunday political talk programme).
Note that I had fairly poor TV reception at this point so the picture gets a bit choppy. We hope this doesn't spoil your enjoyment of the programme. Original transmission was 10 September 2000.
Part 2 is here: • Heseltine: A Life in t...

Thanks for the upload. Subtitles too 😍 This is like a reminiscence therapy for me! I’m intrigued by his “recollection” of Thatcher complaining about council house tenants leaving the underfloor heating on all day. Did council houses have underfloor heating? I seem to remember there was a brief period when new build council houses were heated by a community boiler and were complaining because they couldn’t turn the heating off in hot weather?

Some excellent advice by Michael Heseltine: "You can survive eggs, but the bricks gets nasty" I thought Maggie Thatcher wasn't into red tape, yet she wanted Westland to be buried in red tape: "[Westland] should have been delt with by the economic committee of the cabinet, or the relevant sub-committee of that." I mean, if she wanted to get rid of red tape, why was there a sub-committee of the economic cabinet?

May 1979 the Tory is in office in power once again. Michael Heseltine really demonstrated his rare courage to convince the convention to give attention to the inner cities in particular Liverpool. And Heseltine - a life in the political jungle is excellent documentary. Thanks a lot for uploading this one. 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇

Fantastic documentary series! I wonder though; was this only shown in the London/LWT area? Or was it networked on the whole of ITV? It seems like the kind of thing the network would inexcusably reject at the time despite being relevant on a national level.

Politicians are not noted for their humility. I'm no Tory but Hestletine's an intelligent and perceptive politician. He once said 'Labour will win power when it wants to'. When Labour elected Blair showed it wanted it wanted power - electing Corbyn was a sure sign it didn't want power. As a social democratic member of the Labour Party I hope and believe that the election of Keir Starmer as leader indicates that we are serious about wanting power again. Hestletine couldn't stand Thatcher - neither could I - that alone endears him to me.

Anti-semtic bullshit. The election result that your lot delivered for Labour last time should have ensured a lifetime of silence - but your verbosity is seemingly as eternal as your utter stupidity.

A ghastly snivelling liberal snob; never a Conservative,...brought down the greatest Prime Minister this country has ever known, the quite brilliant and resolute Margaret Thatcher. Part of the One Nation, No Nation clique of 50's genteel decline that paved the way for trade union tyranny and industrial decline of the 1960's and 70's. Central to the ineptitude of Heath and Major,...brought us the EU catastrophe, the ERM fiasco and disastrous 15% interest rates, boom and bust,...led to the Tories worst ever G/E defeat in 1997 to old demon eyes Blair. Heseltine, a fake and a fraud and a phoney.
