As a guitar player with 7-8 guitars I use (obviously no where near as good as him) I completely understand. Certain guitars just have certain feels for certain songs. I own 10 guitars ( you need different tunings, different gauges, diff types of strings ) because of my little home studio. And each neck size, neck thickness, how the frets are leveled, fret curvature/radius, shape, balance etc all of these are diff on each guitar. Comes down to ergonomics, hand size etc but yeah even Hetfield knows there’s “something about that guitar” that’s more comfortable for down picking, alt picking etc For example an esp or jackson neck is so much more thin on the back and the fret wires are more flat, while the strat has a higher radius (curvature). This makes the strings fret out (and stop ringing) when you bend them if you don’t have a medium to high action. While the flatter radius guitar can do that on lower actions. Cheers fellow tone seekers

This also includes songs that already had lower tunings to begin with like Sad But True, All Nightmare Long, and anything off St. Anger. If I remember correctly, the reason for it is for James to not strain himself on vocals night after night and also because.. lower tunings are heavier lol

For me playing a song on a 'wrong' guitar, feels like playing sports while wearing jeans. It just feels wrong.

You'd be surprised by how much practice it takes before a tour to refresh on the songs & their structures... even after playing them for 40+ years.

They rehearse over and over before they go on tour. Most musicians that have been doing it for a long time need refreshers from time to time even on their own stuff. Rush used to talk about this a lot as they got older. Like many other bands they cursed themselves regularly for being so technical while they were young and now they have to try to remember and be able to perform like that as a bunch of old men. :)

It's not that hard. Growing up I learned to be a south indian carnatic classical musician on violin. I'm probably average level of playing skills, but at the height of my practising, I had easily 400+ songs memorized, and these are very complicated songs mind you.

You need a quiver of guitars like surfboards. But really metal only plays in one style - hum buckers with fast neck, low action & a short scale

That's because the Flying V? Is the most metal looking and most metal sounding of all guitars. We all seen James return to the V after about a straight decade of the Hetfield Explorer. The V is suprisingly light compared to the Explorer and if you got the skills? Like the V plays itself. It has a more sensitive feel on the fretboard. Which is why James wasn't feeling it on the fretboard. V's play themselves. That's what James was looking for.

Two words: "Muscle Memory" .....when you are playing at his level... you do not even think ...you just do .....If he had to think about the song he would struggle to play it ...if he is relaxed.... it's no big deal ....His muscle memory for the song... is based upon the guitar type used ....It also appears he might wear the V slightly lower then the Snakebite.
