The greatest player I have ever seen rest well Lewis.

This Scots lad discovered rugby league in 1959. I had never heard of the game until I moved to Leeds. I used to watch Hunslet at first, but I started going to Headingley with some different mates in 1960, so I saw Lewis Jones through that championship season and well remember both the semi against Saints and the final at Odsal. That semi was a great game. I don't think there was such a creative and original player in the game as Lewis Jones until Ellery Hanley emerged. His hitch kick would still work one-on-one in the game today, if anyone had the timing to do it as he did. His innovation of the delayed pass also depended on superb timing. That might not work in the modern game, but if it didn't he'd have thought of something else. He was a thinker about the game on top of all his skills. I remember having yelled at me: "Ne'mind what ye saw Lewis Jones do on Sat'day, lad, just look were ye're passin' ". Even good players couldn't reproduce some of the things Lewis Jones pulled off, never mind me!
