In this video I teach how to play 12-bar blues-based rock and roll/rockabilly in the key of A - a great rockin' key! *
Here's a contents list (with times) so you can jump to topics if you wish to:
- 12 Bar Blues in A - Version 1: 01:05
- Rockin' with open chords #1: 02:38
- 12 Bar Blues in A - Version 2: 03:47
- Rockin' with open chords #2: 04:23
- Blues Riffs: 06:15
- Rock 'n' Roll Riff #1 - A Chord Riff: 08:27
- Rock 'n' Roll Riff #2 - A Chord Riff: 10:10
- Rock 'n' Roll Riff #3 - E Chord Riff: 10:55
- Rock 'n' Roll Riff #4 - E Chord Riff: 11:53
- Rock 'n' Roll Riff #5 - D Chord Riff: 12:20
- Rock 'n' Roll Riff #6 - D Chord Riff: 13:50
- Sliding Up to the D Chord: 14:12
- Sliding Up to the A Chord: 15:21
- Rock 'n' Roll Ending Lick #1: 16:27
- Rock 'n' Roll Ending Lick #2: 17:43
- Puttin' It All Together! : 18:09
Whilst I talk about playing rock 'n' roll and rockabilly on acoustic guitar, these riffs and techniques sound great on both acoustic and electric guitar.
I've recently published a chord songbook called '50 from the Fifties' ...containing 50 classic rock 'n' roll songs from the 1950s. All of the songs can be played with just 4, easy open chords! It's ideal for both beginners and experienced guitarists who want to use the techniques I teach in my tutorials on some great rockin' tunes. It contains classic hits by the likes of Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, and many more. If you'd like to buy a copy then search for 'Jez Quayle Rock and Roll Songbook' on the Amazon or Lulu.com websites.
* Here are a few of the many great rock 'n' roll/rockabilly recordings (mostly '12-bar blues' based) made in the key of A:
- Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins / Elvis Presley / Eddie Cochran
- Boppin' the Blues - Carl Perkins
- Gone Gone Gone - Carl Perkins
- Lawdy Miss Clawdy - Elvis Presley
- Long Tall Sally - Eddie Cochran
- Looking For Someone to Love - Buddy Holly
- Matchbox - Carl Perkins / The Beatles
- Oh Boy! - Buddy Holly
- Peggy Sue - Buddy Holly
- Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley & His Comets
- Rock 'n' Roll Ruby - Warren Smith
- Skinny Jim - Eddie Cochran
- That'll Be The Day - Buddy Holly
- That's All Right - Elvis Presley
- Twenty Flight Rock - Eddie Cochran
- Think It Over - Buddy Holly
- Ubangi Stomp - Warren Smith
- Uranium Rock - Warren Smith

What A FIND! WHAT A SERVICE YOU HAVE GIVEN! - I have watched and practiced a LOT of guitar tutorials over the years and taken a lot of paid internet and in-person lessons but I have seldom if ever seen instruction this good. You packed more into this 18 minutes than anything I have seen. It is the kind of thing that gives so much variation in sound with minor variations that it motivates guitar players to keep playing. -- Thanks for the clear instruction.

I love this Jez, I only just found you in my recs, and I have to say you are one of the most natural, unassuming and easy to follow guitar tutors I have been able to find online, I love in particular that I can always see both of your hands, and without having to be a picture in picture which I often find distracting and hard to connect and follow with the strum, I am definitely going to try playing along with you as soon as I have tuned my guitar, which has been somewhat dormant through these months of lockdown that I have not been able to meet and play with my regular Guitar Group, Best wishes Julie

Playing an A major Buddy's way makes it a lot easier to transition between A, D, and A7. I was struggling with the solo on Peggy Sue where on the A chord right before he goes back to E he lifts his finger off and back on the b string second fret{A sus2}. It's a lot easier to do with your middle finger than your pinky. I think I'm going to start fingering A the alternative way from now on, thanks.

I taught that stuff to my 5yo son already and now he get's started with rockin :-) The only exemption is that I taught him power chords to easy the first steps. I can really recommend this because this get's your beginner fingers moveable and stretchy and you achieve first successes very quick :-)

Great! I'd love to see a video of a 5-year-old playing rock 'n' roll like this. This is the first in a series of tutorial videos I have planned, so stay tuned to learn loads more rock 'n' roll/rockabilly guitar techniques that build on what I teach in this video.

Ah, I see. Yes, I've noticed some guitar teachers are inclined to show off during their lessons, which misses the point of the lesson really. I'm self-taught, and I think that affects how I teach. I'm glad my approach works for you. 😄
