Volkswagens of the same era use the same HVAC box and have the same foam problem. HumbleMechanic has a video on repairing the foam also. Instead of using foam, some people sell plastic plugs to glue onto the blend doors.

Yes, the foam is a common problem. I saw those plastic plugs. But I think the reason OE have the foam is to reduce the noise of the air in the box. In addition the metal flaps without the foam theoretically may resonate. In other words the foam dampens the noise from the air as well from the flaps.

wow your way ahead of me i have a million questions but looks like you have your own issues LoL one specific question did you put the seat motor back in place with the connectors intact and put power to the switch ?? that could be where i’m going wrong i put power directly to the motor and it got hot

hope all is well appreciate all the feedback back i finally got seats out im not going to be able to salvage them . the foam is full of mold just beware on your seats i’ll have to buy some used ones i’ve seen several that will work i flooded to bottom of dash so will replace everything down my question is what are my chances of success depinning and cutting back to clean copper spraying deoxit on everything repining to new connectors i’m doing new fuses relays and the holders for those i know i will need a rear control module memory seat module probably the bose subwoofer module and the ac sport mode controls etc a lot of work are you sourcing parts from ebay or are you looking local salvage sorry for the nitrate of questions but you are in the exact process i’m in

@ thanks for all the tips i was able to get the full interior out water level was high but the main ECU and convertible roof were spared i was able to get hatch open using the top you gave me on #19 wire i’ve since purchased the ALLDATA info for the car having those wiring diagrams and the car schematic map helps tremendously hope your project is going well i’m on the connectors now . What a pain getting those corroded pins out
