Hex Map Worldbuilding GAMIFIED

Just having fun with a new way of creating fantasy maps! I quite like this method and think the map I created in the end turned out quite nicely.

Trying to just have fun with the video creation process to get back into the swing of things and this was a random idea that seemed fun, so I just rolled with it... get it?! "Rolled." Amazing.

I also tried keyboard-mashing numbers, then putting spaces in between them so they are all 20 or under, then arranging all numbers so they form a square/rectangle as a whole, then colouring it like a colour-by-number painting. I would love a consise, consistant, and complete collection of random tabls for worldbuilding/mapmaking. It would be interesting to create a series of random maps and my players choose which map we use for their adventures.

@@CrossTrainedMind Oh that's a cool way to DM - I never thought about the players choosing the maps before hmmm... I have thought about putting together a book or patreon or something like that dedicated to just ALL the random generation tables for all sorts of things. I've got so many ideas and love coming up with them.

I would love to see a full book with rules for generating an adventure map. Maybe a chapter for a campaign-size map, another for a one-shot adventure map. Or just chapter for each common map scale. I try not to back too many KS, but this is one I would like.

Oooo I wonder if there should be a new mechanic for swamps/marshes… or if that is getting too complex? Maybe just something you add where it makes sense at the end. But definitely see opportunity for that in this map, good spotting.

Try rolling first, then picking where to place the tile. You can mix "authorial intent" and rules to get semi-random shapes. Example rules: Danger - Don't touch settlement if possible Forest - Don't touch forest if possible Plains - Touch water or settlement if possible. Avoid mountain. Mountain - Touch mountain or edge of map if possible Water - Must touch water if possible. Otherwise, touch settlement. Settlement - Place City 6+ hexes away from settlements. If not possible, Town 3+ hexes away from settlements. Otherwise, a village.

Oh cool that’s an interesting way to break it down - it almost becomes like a strategy game to see if you can place them while breaking the least amount of rules 🤔

This is a pretty cool idea for sure. I think I'll have to try it, but I don't like the hexagon shape, so I'm going to try it with a bunch of different shapes and see which works best for me 🤔

Oh interesting… what shapes you thinking? Hex is like the basic map crawl/video game (civ) tile shape is why I went for it

@@PenandBlade Oh yeah, I almost forgot the Civ games did have the hex shape. I always turn the grid off. I was thinking of squares, rectangles, diamonds, perhaps even some triangles. Some shapes sound like they might not work, but I haven't tried any yet.

@@PenandBlade I’m still sketching to keep sharp, but doing a little less while I focus on getting into better cardio shape. Probably going to be starting another sketchbook for dedicated practice in a few weeks/couple months, based on my current progress.

Tedious and unrealistic. Towns and cities aren't located in forests. They're surrounded by fields that feed them. The perils are all located kind of centrally, and some are very close together; two are underwater.
