This is a great tutorial. You are really good at your explanations, nice and clear directions! Thank you 😊. I have a question though ... is there a reason why you decided to assemble the three layers like you did, by tucking under the fabric edges before top stitching … instead of putting the layers together wrong sides and then just turning outside in to finish? I’m wondering if that would still work for this piece like I’ve done with bags, etc.
@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pele! Thank you for sharing that with me, it is my goal to be as clear as possible and it is nice to know that I am actually helping! I had considered doing it the way you mention, however I was worried the points wouldn't end up as crisp so I chose to fold in and iron. However if you do try the other way please let me know how it goes! Another way to do it would be to add Bias Tape. If you have never added bias tape before I have a tutorial walking you through all the steps at minute 5 in this tutorial here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qomvd595drGmnKc Hope this helps! Happy Sewing :)

Like the simplicity of this table topper. One thing I'd do different is attaching the backing. I'd lay the top and backing right sides facing then place them on the batting; sew 1/4 inch around the edge LEAVING an opening on one side to turn the topper right side out. Then do a 1/8 or 1/4 inch around the entire outer edge, thus closing the opening.
@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Betty! I have been asked if that would work but since I have yet to try that method I have been unable to say if it works. Have you done it this way? My only concern was that I wouldn't end up with crisp points. But the more I contemplate it the more I think your way could be much easier. I am going to have to give it a try and then I may need to make a new tutorial :) Anything to make this project easier for a beginner.

Tamara, thank you so much for this video. If I were to add more strips would it make it larger? I was thinking instead of 5, adding 7 strips. Would I have to make any adjustments? I have a larger coffee table I would like to put it on.
@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Victoria, if you add more strips you will not have enough width if you cut the strips from selvage to selvage. You can still do it though! You will just need longer strips to start with. Or a second set as you will not get as many triangles out of each strip when they are larger. I hope that makes sense. I have been contemplating making a larger one too! I hope it turns out for you. And if you make a larger one this method: kzbin.info/www/bejne/imWxkGaleJyIfKc may help attach the backing to the front easier then the method I showed in this video.

@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY Жыл бұрын
Hi Louise, yes you can but the deeper the triangle and longer your strips will need to be so you can still get 6 triangles from the strip. Perhaps make a triangle template out of paper to figure out how long the strip of fabric will need to be first. Happy sewing!

Thank you for this tutorial. I am anxious to try it with leftovers from a jelly roll however the patterns are directional. I’m very challenged in my ability to visualize a future cut. Would turning one of the matched pairs result in the pattern being consistent when the triangles are pieced? Thank you
@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
If all 5 strips of fabric are different then the piece will have a pattern. If you make the two outer strips the same fabric and the next two pieces the same then all five "rings" of the hexagon will match up and be the same fabric. I hope that makes sense. The middle strip of fabric will always line up and stay the same. Happy Sewing!

@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jelena! Did you iron the seams down before sewing the pieces together? And again once the top was all sewn? Another thing to consider is what way you are sewing the triangles together. I like to start from the outer edge and sew towards the smaller point when putting the triangles together. Also, after ironing all the seams flat then when you do a stop stitch to attach the pieces together it should help as well? Hope this helps. Let me know?

@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Linda, if you want each row to match up then you can only use three different fabrics. You will lay out your strips like this: 1,2,3,2,1, Then when you cut your triangles and flip them they will still line up. Hope that helps! Also, I have a better way of finishing up the hexagon these days which I show in this tutorial here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nprXfa1opM-dmrM Happy Sewing!

I am so glad to hear that Kathy! It is on my list of to do's to refilm this so it is easier to follow. Yes , you could use fat quarters but it will make it harder to have the same designs you see in this tutorial. It will probably have a more "patchwork" feel which I think would look adorable as well! The biggest thing to keep in mind is how many triangles you can cut from the width of the fabric you are using. Perhaps make a paper template first to visually see how large the triangle is. Happy Sewing!

Hello. Can you tell me where to get the measurements? It would be enough to put a piece of paper next to each piece and write the measurements there. You have a video on you tube and do you think everyone knows your speech? The work is beautiful. I have nothing to do with it because I don't know the dimensions. I didn't even find it in the transcript! Mary from the Czech Republic

Check out that video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJOweKtrhcqWoJosi=b3GjIzFq274D7uHp another thing you could do to make sure your triangles are the same is by making a template out of paper. @TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Erika! I hope to make another one in the future with better footage. As for making is smaller you could do 1"strips but I don't think I would go any smaller then that. and perhaps only four strips? The center point may become complicated if the second seam from the second strip is too close to it though. Just a thought.

love your tutorials your instructions are easy to follow. I do have a question I'm trying to combine two of your ideas into a project your easy christmas trea skirt and table topper.. The table topper is too small and is not round .Trying to make an interesting table cloth for an outside small round metal table about 38" with an umbrallla hole. just can't quite wrap my head around the idea . any thought on how to do this.
@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Marilyn :) As for your question, you could add more strips to this table topper and cut out larger triangles. You would just end up having to sew a lot more strips together and more then one 42" length section as the larger the triangle gets the less triangles you will cut out of one section. OR you could check out my Christmas tree skirt tutorial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/baOUc6F8r7SWgbs where you could easily do the same idea without cutting a slit down the center. And if you get fabric that is wider than 42" then you can do this and end up with a larger table cloth. Then just hem the edge. Hope that helps! Happy sewing :)

If I wanted to make the diameter larger can I just continue a pattern Outward on the strips? Instead of 5 strip maybe 9? Would it still be 60 degrees?
@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Miranda, Yes and No. yes you would still use a 60 degree angle to cut. And yes you can add more strips. But it will make the triangle larger so you will not be able to get 6 triangles out of one set of fabric from selvage to selvage. You will need to make two sets of strips. Hope that makes sense! Happy sewing!!💜

Hi Rebecca! I have an updated version of this tutorial that I will post this Friday morning. It will walk you through everything in a much better way. since you did not bind the project why didn't you do the stitch and flip method? it would save all that folding in and pressing. The top stitching would be the same and would close the opening you left to flip the project right side out.

Question, being new to sewing, mine wants to bow. what did I do wrong?
@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 2 жыл бұрын
If it is bowing when you are sewing the strips together I would suggest sewing one strip in one direction then flipping the project and sewing the next strip in the opposite direction. If it is bowing when sewing the triangles together I am not sure what is happening. Make sure you are using a cotton fabric to avoid stretch, press the fabric without moving the iron around as that will warp the fabric. Sew 3 triangles together and 3 together then do the final seam. And do this all slowly. I hope t his helps Rae. And if you are new to sewing sometimes it is just that it takes practice and a few tries. things get easier over time. You got this!!!!!

Tamara, I have a problem when I cut my fabric with my cutter. It’s the first time that I cut with that "devil machine" !! I have problem to make it cut and it’s a brand new that I just buy!! Do you push very hard on your cutter or is it supposed to just roll and it cuts 2-3 strips??
@TamarasJoyDIY
@TamarasJoyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
If I cut through more then one piece of fabric at a time I do add pressure. And if your cutter is new the blade should be sharp. But if you are finding the blade needing a lot of pressure then the blade is not sharp enough. Eventually all blades dull, so then buying replaceable blades will help. Hope that helps! Happy Sewing🧵🥳
