If you assert that the bible is historically accurate then you have to consider other relevant historical sources to test its accuracy. Outside of the Bible there is zero evidence for a census of the entire world in which everybody had to return to their ancestral home to register. You would think that this is such a big thing that at least one Roman historian would mention it. Further, the purpose of a census was to find out who was living where now, primarily for tax purposes. Why did Joseph have to go to the ancestral home of David ? David lived in Bethlehem one thousand years before Joseph. We don’t read about anyone else having to return to their ancestral homeland dating back hundreds of years.
