On this special episode of "Hey, DT!" I'm answering the questions that I've been getting related to gear and equipment that I use.
0:00 Intro
0:40 How's the Moonlander working for you?
3:36 What do you think of using a normal camera as a webcam? What camera do you use?
6:45 Noticed your microphone and wondered what is it? Dynamic or condenser?
12:12 Why do you have that giant mixer rig?
14:53 What headset are you using?
17:42 Will you take a look at Gitea?
19:48 What monitors? What resolution? Why is your desktop so zoom out?
22:52 Why don't you make videos for how build hardware?
23:51 I heard you have 128GB of RAM, do you think it's overkill?
25:57 Thanks to the Patrons!

Thanks for doing this video! I have been curious about how you produce your videos as my channel is so new here! I have and continue to learn a lot from you and so very happy to be a Patreon for you. I have yet to see a video you made that is irrelevant and of course as a fellow OSS guy, very happy to hear what you think. BTW: My old cam was a Logitech C922 and it served me for over 7 years. I just picked up a new cam which is a Lumina 4K webcam which has a Sony CMOS in it and comes with some cool items like a white balance and color balance card and is made very high quality. Love it. Great Video as always!!!

Great video DT! I used to produce audio for community radio in the UK and actually did a lot of the work remotely using an SM-58 connected to a Focusrite Scarlet Solo audio interface. All of my post production was done in Audacity (pre-spyware days) and it all sounded good enough for broadcast. I upgraded my setup as I got more experience and learned along the way. Half the time its not the equipment you use but, instead the knowledge of how to use what you have. I’ve seen people use thousands of pounds worth of hardware and not be able to produce anything much yet others have produced really good content with much less complex (and expensive) hardware. Start with something affordable and then expand your equipment as you outgrow that capabilities of your setup. I believe in the concept of content-value which basically means then content comes first and if that content is of good quality then the production values aren't so important (to a point). This is apecaiully true with fast-paced items which are just shot on the fly. A lot of youtubers I watch shoot their footage with a mobile phone or tablet yet their videos still have value as the information in them is still good.

For simple high quality, cheap setup, I can recommend U-phoria UMC22 + simple XLR microphone with arm, pop-filter etc. EDIT: You have better audio setup than most of tech & floss content creators, even LTT have worse I think ;)

I enjoy my m1 mini 16 ram. I make music, and use midii a lot. I haven't had to use any work arounds for my work flow. I can see me needing to upgrade in the future for bigger songs.

I think you meant ATH-AD1000, and most likely the AD1000X if it was a few years ago. Also curious why you chose the RE27 over the RE20. Love your videos, thanks

Hay DT. You mentioned you have raspberry pi’s. Now I know you like a challenge….. I’ve installed arch on mine and I’m using it to decide which window manager I want to use. Qtile, i3, awesome, herbsluft, dwm they all install from the repos….xmonad however……I’ve installed it using ghcup and cabal but it can’t see the XMonad module and so the config file doesn’t work. Wanna give it a try? It would make an interesting video if you can video capture the pi and hey, it’ll increase the xmonad community. As a hint, the build instructions I used didn’t seem to put the xmonad package into the ghc package database.

I have the moonlander and the kensington expert mouse - absolutely excellent devices. The mouse is a little less functional on Linux than Windows and I can't seem to find any means of configuring it with Wayland and it's annoying on X11 as well - but doable. I bought the moonlander with the reds, but they were way to heavy. I ended up swapping them out for Kailh Silent Browns.

Nice. I went with Kailh Coppers on both the Ergodox and Moonlander. They took some time to get used to being that it doesn't take much to actuate them. But after I got used to them, I love it.

@@45531 manjaro KDE. Gives me the choice on login to boot with x11 or Wayland. Wayland was the default. To configure, I made a 10-kensington-expert.conf file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d. It's a one time set. Works fine. But, in Windows, there's heaps more options and options for different programs.

No but my Raspberry Pi HQ Cameras are. I have 2 plus 4 of the autofocus HQ cameras from the recent Kickstarter. I probably have over a dozen of the lesser RPi cameras from various vendors.
@DistroTube
@DistroTube 2 жыл бұрын
No. Camera firmware (and just hardware in general) is still not as "open" as software. While we are winning with open software, open hardware is still something that is sadly lacking.

It is. You actually need 2 TB if you use this very demanding Arch based distro running a tiling WM plus a few terminal kind of workflow, Emacs can suck up the half of it, and vim the other half. On the other hand, if you run a virtual machine, you can only give it half of a thread, so your remaining 23 and a half threads can idle big time and utilize all the investment you have made.

If you want a nice keyboard, skip all the trendy high dollar stuff and get a DIY kit. You can do a soldering kit or get completed PCBs with swappable switch sockets. It will change your life. But I warn you, stay away from aesthetic pursuits. It would be cheaper to start sh00ting up.

I thought about getting a gaming keyboard a while back, but I decided against it, as I find my Logitech Split Keyboards very usable. I did however get some gaming mice to use with my laptops, mostly for the ease of adjusting the tracking speed, and wired means no low mouse battery in the middle of something important.

you have the hardware guys who build you the most ridiculous system able to do like games, rendering, whatever ton of stuff at the same time and then you have the software guys who strip everything down and sleek their workflow to the least minimum needs of requirements ending up idling in a terminal so these two types of people combined i wonder what abomination you'll get but typically they stay in their respective bubble ^^

Programmable ortho keyboards are great, especially split ones. But stop recommending overpriced crap like ergodox. There are plenty of open-source split keyboards with QMK that you can assemble yourself for a fraction of a price. And if you can't solder, it's still about half the price to buy something like lily58 or corne assembled.
