CHEAP! My folks bought a brand spankin' new, bright red 1976 AMC Pacer off the lot in November of '77, complete with tax, tags, paperwork, and a dealer-installed AM/FM (mono) radio for $1,950. OK,that was below sticker for a very left over, very stripped down, entry level car that the dealer had so that he could lure customers onto the lot by advertising a car at base sticker price. What they used to call a "loss leader". Straight-6, 3-on-the-tree, no power anything (steering, brakes, windows, locks, seat, mirrors, etc), no radio originally and, worst of all for a Pacer, NO AIR CONDITIONING! Mom tried to trade it in on a new '85 Chevy/Toyota Nova about 8 years later, and they offered $50 in trade-in for the little red, 50,000 mile fishbowl. My then-wife and I needed a second car at the time, so she gave it to me instead. The second clutch was nearly wiped by that time (Mom was always hard on clutches), but I managed to get a few more years out of it before it went away completely. Definitely a cheap little car, but at least it had an honest-to-goodness glove box!
@mikenb3461 Жыл бұрын
I remember that well. My father had a '72, '73, or "74. I can't remember. I do remember the lack of a glove box though. Watching and wishing the best for Steve, these videos are priceless. We had two 1970 Mavericks in our big family circa 1975-85. Nice little runabouts with the 200 CI engines, delivering steady 30MPG on the highway. I rebuilt the C-4 after a "free tranny inspection" at AAMCO predicted doom & gloom. Now I know it was probably unnecessary, but that and rebuilding the 1-BBL carb started my mechanic journey. You mentioned those cursed shock towers at 3:23. I expected you to mention the inaccessible "lifetime lubricated" A-arm pivots inside them that squeaked constantly. I was a Ford mechanic at an SC dealership in the summer of 1979. No access or zerk fittings to lube the pivots but Ford garages had a special tool to grease them. Good hot, sweaty, knuckle-busting times.

One of the first cars I owned was a ‘72 Maverick, 4 door with a solid 302,2 barrel ,with single exhaust. I immediately got a true dual exhaust installed, rebuilt the carb, had the intake manifold removed and cleaned up all the ports( lightly sanded out ), and had the transmission (C4) rebuilt with a good shift kit. E-70-14’s up front and F-70-14’s out back. Added some aluminum slotted mags and away I went. Scared quite a few people back in the day. And to top it off, it was the exact same Robin’s Egg Blue as your example right there.

Hey Steve, if you haven't already, may I suggest talking about the jeep comanche(2:36) and possibly the jeep brand and its different ownerships over the years. Love the videos

My buddy had one in high school... In the mids 90s... I remember us intentionally overfilling the air suspension in the back to give it some front-end lean.. it was so bouncy. Probobly dangerous. 15us old, young and dumb. But man it was fun. Ive only ever seen one other on the road.
