As a 78 year old Texan who was a rancher for 50 years I enjoyed your commentary. Our Mexican field hands were like our family. We worked side by side. We sweated and toiled, celebrated births and mourned death together. Good post I am now a subscriber.. Keep up the good work.

I saw Carroll Baker at a sixtieth anniversary screening of "Giant." She thought that Dean might have gone into directing had he lived, and gave a good example as to why. In Jett Rink's drunken scene with Leslie's daughter Luz, Dean didn't think he was giving the right facial expressions and urged Stevens to keep the camera on Baker: her face would say it all. He was absolutely right. Luz grasps -- and makes us grasp -- the sorrow of this man who has everything in the world except what he most truly desires. Perceptive woman without her car ("Kindergarten Cop" reference), clearly

Excellent commentary! I saw that this was an hour and didn’t plan to watch the entire video but ended up getting sucked in. You have some hilarious comments. Yes, Liz was breathing so slow; Hudson is tall AF and Jimmy would lose a fight with him; and that aging makeup was horrible. I wasn’t sure why I liked this movie but your analysis makes it more clear to me why it’s so good. Thank you!

Giant is a superb masterpiece, I personally rate this epic far better than Gone with the wind
@Sweetback127Here2 жыл бұрын
Wow what a reaction, thank you. Giant is such an underrated masterpiece. The fact that Gone With The Wind is considered Hollywood's golden age best film or most epic film shows exactly what's wrong with society when Giant exists
@DeepScreenAnalysis2 жыл бұрын
Why is Gone with the Wind not deserving of that praise? From a technical standpoint and in terms of story, it is still a powerful movie. Both movies depict a racist society, except Giant has the Elizabeth Taylor character openly challenge this prejudice whereas the Vivien Leigh character only cares about herself and her own survival.
@Sweetback127Here2 жыл бұрын
@@DeepScreenAnalysis There's a difference between showing a time and place and glorifying the south and racism. Scarlett O'Hara slaps a slave about and says to her "I'll sell you back down south" and whines for the whole 4 hours of the film annoyingly. I agree with you though, it is an incredibly impressive film with a lot to appreciate at the same time. I just think Giant should get the praise instead
@DeepScreenAnalysis2 жыл бұрын
@@Sweetback127Here I don’t think GWTW glorified mistreatment of slaves. Scarlett is not an admirable character, she is a selfish bitchy brat, and I appreciate that the movie doesn’t try and make her a heroine. That movie is about the ridiculous delusion of the white South that they were chivalrous, when really it shows them to be hollow people who are can no longer live off the free labour of the enslaved once the war comes.

I’ve always thought that Jet was Lutz’s illegitimate son. It’s implied, that’s why she left him the land. Not many watchers pick that up. Of course this movie was about racism! I dont get that you didn’t get it from the time they arrived at Reata. Rock was 6 foot 5. George Steven’s had Rock very involved in the look of the house, both inside and out. He had Rock choose the colours, furniture etc. He tried to get him deeply into the character, saying ‘it’s your house. What should it look like? What colours do you want? What desk? It’s your desk! You’re Bick Benedict. We’ll build it how you want it.’
@jamesharper39333 жыл бұрын
Additional comments: Elizabeth Taylor's character really busted a lot of glass with her clash with the social standards and traditions her husband was used to. So much to comment on here. That's why this movie is so great. All the movements and ambling through his lines was all part of his method acting. It's a shame we didn't get to see what could have been.

There's a film that's kind of nothing but kind of everything called 'Fandango,' and it's about what happens to some University of Texas college grads on one last road trip to see where they shot 'Giant,' in the shadow of the Vietnam war. I always think about it when anyone mentions 'Giant.'

Not many people get the subtlety of Luz and her relationship with Jet. He is her illegitimate son. That's why she leaves him some land. Its never said but I think there is a subtle implication. And Bic (Jordan) doesn't know.

A Giant of a movie. Hope you watched it in widescreen. That's the best way to see this. Yeah, I like the Cinematography and the use of dark and light. Sadly, James Dean never lived to see Rebel Without a Cause or Giant. He died in that car wreck right after filming wrapped up on this movie. He, Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift were 3 of the up and coming stars along with Paul Newman and Steve McQueen. Which reminds me, I would love your reaction to Rebel Without a Cause. I've had people say when they saw it for the first time, it was like watching a piece of history, not a movie. Interesting.👍💥😀 Oh and yes, being the 1950's, they dealt with the issue of racism. The fight at the restaurant near the end shows Rock Hudson's character redeeming himself.

It looks like you are trying to make light of the movie but anyone who's seen the movie knows there is some heavy, sobering content in this movie about the way racism is just perpetuated like an everyday act with no remorse. As Jordan ages he eventually comes around as some of the other characters do too. Point is the joking manner can't be forced upon the seriousness of what this movie depicts.
@pillboxmovies2 жыл бұрын
I mean, I'm sure it "looks" like that to you, that I, a minority living in America, am making light of racism in America, as opposed to making light of the depiction of racism in America, from the perspective of an elite white upper class, in a Hollywood movie, that I also say is a masterpiece in the title of the video, and also call it utopian, because it shows an ideal version of race relations in America, but ultimately an unrealistic one that's meant for consumption largely as entertainment. But sure whatever it "looks" like to you, I'm sure that's where the truth lies.
