The thing I like best about JG's vids are that if you're an intermediate player who just quickly wants to know a song, JG's camera positioning and chord voicings are so clean that you can often figure it out from just the beginning without needing the lesson. Still, the lessons are handy for harder stuff. Thanks again JG!

You did this one very well. My wife's 17 yr old nephew and her sang this at her brothers funeral and did a very good job at it. Now I feel a strong need to learn it as well. Not an easy strum despite how easy it sounds. I have had a hard time making it smooth, but just started working with it. Thanks for the lesson Sir!

A few months ago at a folk music festival I met a guitar player and I told him that I practice flat picking as part of my practice routine with acoustic guitar. He told me I was wasting my time??!! I told myself he didn't know what he was talking about as I want to cover Bob Dylan and Neil Young who both use flat picking in their music. Now that I'm learning this song my flat picking practice is bearing fruit. Thank you for this exellent lesson!

Great to revisit this great teaching video. Neil Young is the reason I started playing guitar. As you say it’s all about what he does with his strumming hand, pretty much in all his songs. It’s a tricky but great technique to master.

"You could pick it out. It doesn't have exactly teh same ... feel. I'm not sure how to describe it." Described it perfectly. Seems like if you played the right notes on the correct beat but a different way it should sound the same , but it doesn't. Justin gives great Neil Young lessons.
@johndennis51828 жыл бұрын
this is the magic of neil young, cause some people think- Oh he is just playing easy chords. and the foundation is basic chords, but the neil young magic is how he plays them, and it will take a beginner rubbing his head wondering how does neil make his guitar sound like that. I have been playing his songs for years, and to learn how to play like him, is not for the beginner, I would say a little more advance player, if you don't believe me and you are just starting out, try and play needle and the damage done.
@driesduyck4697 жыл бұрын
yes totally agree i play guitar for 3 years. i learn this song 2 years ago and never get a good tone and feel in this song.But today i played it with more expierence and smoother picking and strumming.And id sounded good not perfect ofcourse but good.The trick is dont think just play and feel !

john dennis No doubt Dennis. Neil has made the he easiest chords into the best Chord Riffs. I been playing 20 yrs and teach. Everyone wants to learn Neil starting out but it's not thee chords, it is the switching off and muting that they can't figure out. when I play Neil Young once in a while I still go back and check how he does it. First song I ever learned was America horse with no name. Ha. Great song though. Peace

john dennis hahahahahahaha, how true you are, until I heard and followed Justin's techniques I made the exact same mistake in the same place every time, sad really I am now 68, I started to learn needle since 1975. I've given it away so many times because of frustration. Neil Young's music has pricked my senses in such away I can not move on until I have learned the many songs that I became accustomed to. What a waste, my life has much to do with Neil's lyrics, that touched my soul .

I'm totally stoked Justin. I can play this strumming the whole time while hitting the bass notes and all. Which I am usually poor at doing. Like you say, this is a good song to learn that technique. I found the chords/lyrics as you played them at Ultimate guitar. I printed them out, and can now play and sing the entire song. Thanks Justin. I've been digging the acoustic guitar lately and I think it's improving my overall playing, as I usually only play electric. It's kinda fun trying to sing like Neil as well. lol

This is very fun to play! I can't play the way you/Neil do (keeping that strumming hand constantly moving but still hitting the notes precisely is damn tough), but it's still a fun one. I need to practice that G-chord shape though as I keep defaulting to the index-middle-ring shape that I'm used to which causes me to accidentally mute a note sometimes on that second little riff in the opening.
@elijahmonn37574 жыл бұрын
Caesar Belisarius , it’s interesting the development of playing guitar. I started out playing G the way you are. I moved on to learning finger style and it is common to keep the index finger free. And fret with the other two fingers and small finger. It originally felt so foreign, but now I can’t tell what way I’m playing G chord. Some songs I use ons or the other. But I have noticed than the transition to C after G is a lot easier and quicker for me using the finger style version. It’s amassing how ply able the brain is. I love playing guitar because of this. Remembering words and chord patterns also works the brain. All the best with your playing. Brent
