Another brilliant lesson. Anyone can "play" this song, but few can do so like Neil can. You really show how to take acoustic playing to the next level.

Many of Neil Y songs especially “old man” represent the simple harmony between lyrics and an acoustic guitar. This amazing tutorial is not only accurate it also captures the essence of the song . Thank you.

Don't sell yourself short as a singer, Justin! But it is pretty high on the bridge so love your honesty. Really good lesson. Your lessons are among the best on the KZbin. Your emphasis on rhythm and strumming is right on. Rhythm guitar is a lost art, as I'm sure you know. Most of my students are dying to play like their lead guitar heroes, which is good, but they don't realize that all those heroes had to start at the beginning and play chords and rhythm first. It's the foundation you build on. Thanks for that emphasis. Well done.

Glad to see someone who actually knows how to play the song, I've watched many many so called professional players that add notes or leave out notes and as you said he doesn't do picking he keeps his beat by a constant up and down strum. Just bought my first guitar again in 40 years and am trying to pick up where I left off learning Neil Young, some Pink Floyd and a few others before I hit the stage with a bunch of professional buddies in about a year and a half. Thanks again, much appreciated.

started an account just to comment on this video. All your vids are excellent but i too have been coming back to this one for over a year. Its pretty much an unteachable song. Eventually you just get it but even then you dont really know what your doing to make that distinctive sound it just comes eventually there's so much going on it would be so complicated to explain as you say. Got to love neil tho, so simple but so distinctive

Justin, wow ... you ARE the ultimate educator when it comes to guitar. You strike a great balance between big picture, and details, and cover it at the perfect pace... not too slow, not too fast. Your passion for the music, art, song and the need to do it justice (hence the details) really come through. Great presentation skills, communication skills, top notch brother! Totally impressed! Just started learning acoustic guitar 8 weeks ago after playing bass guitar most of my life, and you just made a very inspirational song that would otherwise be incredibly difficult, much more accessible... thanks man!

I love your take on music. You have just the right amount of specificness combined with feeling. The one thing that would so help, for me anyway, is if you could teach the music showing both hands at the same time. It's very hard to learn them if you can't see what the other hand is doing . Maybe a split screen is possible? Even so I usually go to your lessons first. And I appreciate all the effort you put in, and there's nothing irritating in your style! Whew! Thank the good great universe for people like you.

I was also 22 when this song came out, I could play it reasonably well, but stopped playing a few years later. I got a job in the music industry and became a listener in stead of a player. Now two years ago a friend of mine inspired me to start playing again and I did. Your lesson helped me to recover my memory of this song and now I can play it again. Definitely the closest lesson you can find on the internet for this song. And in my opinion the closest you can get if you are not Neil itself (or really a guitar god). This was the song I wanted to play as I decided to start to learn playing guitar. It took me a lot of practice and I had to revisit this lesson from time to time till all the things are nearly getting possible for me. Thanks to the lesson structure it was easily possible to learn in chunks...

This is always a favorite when I pull out the guitar at the campfire. I cannot sing as well as the J man, so I have to have help. You can really play this in so many ways. J shows the most technical, but you can go beginner and just strum the chord. As you get better, the start throwing in all those little details that make it so great.

my dad had this Neil young harvest album ever since i was born, and i always thought while growing up that it was just some old music, and the guy singing had this weird high pitched voice that sounded terribly awkward, fast-forward 24 years; Neil young Harvest is simply pure gold, odd how taste can change like that. always when listening to this 'Old man' i didn't really understand if this were 2 guitars playing, or if it were finger picked or what kind of guitar style it was, but now i decided to learn it and Waaauw ! It's much more difficult than i anticipated ..

While it is nice to learn how the original played, there is always room to make any song your own by adapting it to your own style. Still, if learned in its original form, it does expand your list of "tools" to use while playing and makes your style additions a bit more in line with the original feel of the song. Good job Justin!

Thanks! I've played this song for years (like a few others on here) and really appreciate the extra nuances you include. Love your sense of humor too, man! I too have struggled (while in a teaching capacity) not to "...suck all the fun...out of this tune" when showing a bright-eyed newbie guitarist a song. I firmly believe growing up learning tunes on my guitar by lifting a record needle and trying to pinpoint the passage I'm working on over and over really benefits me to this day. Listening to the track over and over was a given - and necessary - if you had any hope of learning it. Your song selection is awesome, BTW! Thanks again!

I tried this a few years ago and it was too soon for me: I am finding it much easier now. There is a ton going on in this song. Don't put too much pressure on yourself and just do what you can for now and enjoy the ride as you progress. The basic idea with learning music is to slow down and divide it into learnable chunks, though.

Where to start..? I've just luxuriated in every second of this wonderful lesson into the mechanics of NY''s classic song. Aged 22 in 1972 when I first listened to 'Harvest' (not 24 like in the song!) and (briefly) living the hippy life with my mates in London, I have been haunted by 'Old Man' (...and also 'The Needle...') for over 50 years. I've had a guitar in the house since my teens but only this year decided I should really learn to play it properly. Yes, I left it late! But boy oh boy, the thrill of being able to play these fantastic tunes - and on my new Taylor guitar - is simply beyond words.. Thank you Justin... Your enthusiasm for NY 's music is absolutely evident and in my opinion should be seen as a vital embellishment to learning, in just the same way that the the picking, hammer-ons and other enhancements so characteristic of NY's style of playing are so brilliantly woven into his music. Thanks again.

It was a very good session, structured simply to highlight the fingering of the melody which has always attracted my ear to this song, as well as Neil's style. I will continue working with this video...thanks Justin!

Thanks for this video. I feel like I've learned so much about playing the guitar in terms of timing, strumming, and putting it all together. Helps me to actually learn the instrument rather than just playing tabs.

Love ya man. Been playing since I was thirteen, but after a long break, now sixty...can't believe how easy it is to tune in and learn a song from Justin Guitar. You are a gifted teacher. Don't listen to any of the negative comments. My husband is learning for the first time, and hearing him, I picked up my guitar again and am enjoying all the great resources for learning that are out there now. I remember picking up the arm of the record player and placing it down again and again trying to figure out a song. Now, I just got to Justin Guitar. We are both huge fans and think you are by far the best. We are buying your books. Since I studied classical, I really detest trying to read tablature, so I guess if I had any feedback, I would say that providing real music would help me. I guess that's rare. Keep the little side comments with bits of music theory for us! Your pacing is spot on.

Y'know, Justin, sometimes I look up your lesson videos, even if I already know the guitar parts, because I want to KNOW what it SHOULD sound like, when a GOOD cover version of the song is done properly!.. My man, EVERY TIME I watch you Play and Sing a song, I get INTO it, the whole IDEA of Performing that song for someone!... Cuz when I watch YOU play and sing it, Anyone can SEE, just by the rhythm of your arms, and your whole vibe, that YOU are into it, and that you are doing justice to the song, making it sound GREAT! 👍👍👍

Justin, in 1972 I played this song in front of a bunch of old ladies from an Alumni Group who were probably younger than I am now and if I had this video at that time, I would have done the song the justice you do. Thank you for this, what a great lesson, best I have ever seen!!!!

I was really getting frustrated with picking the exact strings in this song, but after a day of hard practice I finally managed to do it. Thanks to this great tutorial! I’ve seen a lot of them on youtube but none of them play it as accurately to the original song.

I was 25 when I started and am 27 now. I have no idea how I ever lived my life without guitar for 25 years! Guys like Justin and Marty inspired me to learn, and I needed an outlet for rough times. That outlet has turned into an obsession and something I hope to one day do for a living. You are never too old to learn guitar, or anything else for that matter.
