That little flame in the top right right after getting the kill, that means it autosaved over that so he can't go back by save scumming.

I had the Darkmoon Knightess chase me into the elevator shaft and die last night when the elevator was partway down. Managed to get her soul even though it was halfway up the shaft by spamming A. I kinda wonder if that might have worked here. (Also, I learned that it's kinda better for her to be dead than pissed off anyway, especially if you just kill the fang boars in the archive.
