Save your money. Buy a used American $600 Fender Telecaster. I have a 1993 and its my favorite out of all my SG's, Les Paul's, 335's, Strats & PRS. You can always save up $2000 for a Les Paul another time...

Get a used MiM Tele, easily found around $300-$400, and *just as good sounding if not better than* MIA Tele's- When I went to GC to buy a Tele, I was pretty set on American, but after A-B-C-D-'ing 3 MiAs and 1 MiM, I walked out with the MiM! Slightly warmer sound, slightly hotter pickups, otherwise the same in every way but one- WAY better price. :)

You know guys, since then I've got a Les Paul, not a Gibson but some Thai brand, and from my Squier stratocaster to this really heavy body with two humbuckers, especially these days I'm fully into dark-black-doom metal it was a significant transition, plus blues had never sounded so fine. However i felt a lack of bright sometimes. But I've sold my old amp and got a new Fender instead and I can tell you how nice that brightness can be. Nevertheless in the store I've been tested the Fender amp with a Fender Telescaster and... truly they are something unique together. Maybe someday, with more money saved I'll be able to own the best of two worlds. Meanwhile I'm happy with my Fender amp.

Mexican Telecasters are still awesome. I got one years ago and ended up putting American Deluxe pick ups in it (picked them up off a friend who was upgrading his American Tele pick ups for £40). Sounds as good as an American now.
