Despite it being so simple, I've always wondered how I wasn't able to capture the way John plays it in the recording, with all those heavy strumming in the bass notes. Now that you've shown us how it's done, it ALL makes sense now.

In particular, I didn't even think to play this song with the capo on the first fret. That was a "why didn't I think of that?" moment for me.

@@matcoffidis1135 It also sounds really close to the original! I also couldn't get the C7 the way I wanted it like how John played it, but the manner shown in this video makes so much sense. Edit: Just wanted to add that the B7 on the first fret sounds so good and matches the original in ways I never even thought of myself.

Hell yeah, you even covered the shirt from the rehearsal footage! Some great jangly J160e sounds in this one. Not the prettiest sound, but so distinct and it fits in the mix so well

Too cool! I always found it so weird watching the Hey Jude music video and seeing John playing what you played on acoustic guitar on his casino. Before I knew much about guitars, I thought thats what the casino sounded like lol.

Legendary job Sam! Was really cool hearing the guitars, especially George’s lead guitar. It’s a real shame Paul didn’t let George play more lead on the song cause I really enjoyed his parts on the song.

Love this--I learned it sans capo and it never sounded quite right, so I'm gonna try it your way. Such an eccentric strumming pattern by Lennon. He was a total savant. Did a lot of stuff that makes no logical sense but works incredibly well.

Sweet cover! It's shame that Paul had to put so much restriction on George's playing. Guitar really isn't the main focus of the song, but that doesn't really matter, since the song is so damned enjoyable to sing along to!

is there a spot in the rehearsal footage where you can see the neck of john’s guitar? i get that it sounds like open strings (and therefore a capo), but it’s odd that he’d play it that way on the record, but without a capo on the broadcast video.

Yes he did use the J160 without capo for the broadcast. The official recording was two days later at a totally different studio and he played very differently

Ah yeah well that’s a totally different thing altogether Also it’s possible that John uptuned his acoustic a half step so he could play F as an open chord too. It had to be that or capo because we hear that B7 open shape he plays on the recording

Hi Sam! I've got a question, I noticed this cover uses flatwound strings on the acoustic guitar and it got me thinking about what guitars the Beatles would have used flatwounds on. This song was released in the white album sessions, so I wonder if other songs with acoustic guitar from that era like Blackbird have flatwounds too.

Hi Sam, you still Score ! For your future string test on the j-160e (well you likely already know it ) keep in mind that nikel plated string dint exist before august 1970 before it was pure nickel or monel (mona steel) they also say that hex core dint exist before that time but i found an add for ex core Mapes acoustig strings in the gretsch catalog of 1958. Also if your tempted to try monels the Martin retro monel are quite similar to my old gibson mona steel.

I do use the pickup, as well as some acoustic stuff. It was less about volume drop and more a very different eq

i believe THE BEATS were the first "rock band" to use jazz and even sometimes flamenco chords on their songs. that's why i've heard people who are real limited in their playing refer to them as "beatles chords" because they're tough fer beginners and unusual fer rock n' roll. since yer using the capo what key would you say the song is in? how do you think JOHN L. knew to use the capo?

The song is in the key of F. The Beatles learned to use capos from many folk, rock, blues artists they loved like Everly brothers, Pete Seeger, muddy waters

Oh, that's perfect! I always preferred the feel of flatwound electric guitar strings to pretty much everything else, so if I could get away with putting some on an acoustic without a noticeable volume drop, I will! @@sampopkin

@@sampopkin nice, but i just stick to the fact that goerge is playing his squier vi bass. due to the bassline not being as melodic. if paul were to overdub bass i reckon the bass line is going to be more melodic than this.

I remember listening to a version of the song with an electric guitar, but there’s another one isn’t it? But played by John, when they recorded the video, I haven’t been able to find that video 🤔 Anyway this sounds amazing 😎

The early takes had George playing electric throughout. Then Paul told him not to play and they fought These subtle electric lines did make it onto the single though
