This Canadian vegan loves tomato pie. Absolutely delicious with asparagus, garlic, mushrooms, chopped onion and kale sautéed then add nutritional yeast and put in my home made vegan pie crust with my homemade cashew cream cheese spread on the bottom and sliced tomatoes on top to roast to their hearts content for about an hour in a 375 F degree oven. Oh boy. Nootch is a staple in my kitchen. Try it on popcorn too.

I've been following you guys and your adventures for a while, but I've now got my partner Kim watching your weekly VLOG - she's always been resistant to my dreams of narrow boats, camper vans, camping etc, but she likes your perspective on life (particularly Fran's cooking) and maybe, just maybe you're winning her around!! Well done and keep them coming.

Fran and Rich, Myself and Sarah have spent our lockdown coffee breaks catching up on your every episode of your VLOG's, we have found them entertaining and informative so thanks for that. You are a great couple and have opened up a new way of thinking to us and where our future lies. We have booked a rental boat at the end of September to give it a go and we'll see from there. Sarah has just baked the first bread to your recipe, smells great! We look forward to the next episode.

Americans eat savory pies. Onion pie, chicken pot pie, beef pie. Mushroom pie. Turkey pie. Odd but maybe they forgot? Sweet potato pie is a sweet pie in the US. Very southern and fixed much like pumpkin pie. Did you know that you can cut some Queen Anne’s Lace flowers in water with food coloring and the blooms will change to the color in the water? Little children do that for a fun summer activity. It is all around where I live. I didn’t grow up around it so have never done it myself. Professional chefs keep those hand blenders in their kitchen and prefer them to food processors because they can put them right in the pot. They will do most anything you ask them to do. That’s a nice looking chimney!! Great video!! Thanks

How about aluminium gunwhale duck boards stored on the roof and hung from straps from the rooftop handrail? That way you can moor further from the bank and paint both sides ? Boatyards could store and rent them? They might clip together, side by side, to form a decent ridgid gang plank.

I don't know who told you that in the U.S. we only have fruit pies, but that isn't the case. I'm in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and we often have pasties (meat pies) and several stores that sell only pasties. Plus even other dessert pies aren't just fruit pies--pumpkin, pecan, chocolate or coconut or banana cream pies, just to name a few. Your Queen Anne's Lace looks slightly different from ours. It seems to be a big attractor of the Monarch butterfly. Thanks for taking us along for the walk--it was lovely.

Fab video. For the first time I watched it with headphones on. Absolutely brilliant. The sound of the birds, panting dogs and even your footsteps on the towpath. Just lovely to listen to. So many thanks. However adding things like nutritional yeast to food sounds more like a science experiment than cooking to me. But as they say, don't knock it till you've tried it. Keep on keeping on!
@FloatingOurBoat

I understand what you mean about nutritional yeast. It doesn't sound appetising does it, but it is a natural product and really cheese making is a bit of a science experiment itself. It is good and dairy free so we're happy.

Hi! Enjoying your channel; subscribed and have watched all your videos now. This one inspired me to tell you that we make a really good two-crust vegetable pie: in the bottom crust, put a cup and a half of cooked rice, topped by a thin layer of cheese of your choice; on top of that a layer of cooked spinach; a bit more cheese; sautéed mushrooms and onions; a bit more cheese; a grated carrot; and a sliced tomato. Then put the top crust on and cook about half an hour at 400 degrees F. Yummy! Stay safe and keep up the great work! Your fans in southern California, Ken and Kitten Borgers

We here in the states also know about pies. Yes we have our fruit pies, my favorites our: boysenberry, olallieberry, and strawberry. We also have our beef, and chicken pies and not too far away is a little shop where it is all they make. During the holiday season they also make a very good turkey pie. When the weather is cold, "which here in southern California is not very often", I like to make a cottage pie and what I call taco pie which is mildly seasoned ground beef or steak, covered with cornbread, then served with tomatoes, shredded cheese and shredded lettuce. It seems I was not the only one who could not find bread yeast or flour. Today I finally found both, but quite literally the last jar of yeast.

Actually, I don't really have a liking for "dessert" pies. Steak and kidney has always been a favorite. My old mum used to make it occasionally and I tried my hand at it years later when I was married. My first actual pastry and it WORKED! My late wife was taken somewhat aback. It was rather like history repeating itself as my old dad showed my mum that he could whip up a steak and kidney pie, (a proper one with upper and lower crust). He didn't cook often but when he did, it just seemed to work. Mum was not a natural at this but she did learn.

Not a pesto fan but I must admit that your pesto looked great. I know you enjoyed it. We do love both the sweet and savory pies so I would be happy to partake of either. My mom would make a French meat pie called a tourtiere which was usually served on Christmas Eve and it was delicious. I’ve tried to duplicate it but to no avail. Sadly enough. My sympathies on the loss of your friend. Still on lockdown here in Michigan USA. I enjoy your vlog as it’s so upbeat and relaxing. Stay safe out there.

What a shame about your mum's pie recipe. It's always lovely to enjoy flavours from the past.

Kudos on staying 'strong' at the bakery. (me, I would have cheated a bit, walked away with some other pie, probably apple, just a little secret between me and my maker). I believe, the pie that is a wide favorite with us'n in the States is chicken pot pie. Kentucky Fried Chicken sells lots and lots. Otherwise mince meat pie around the holidays. Ahh, got me lusting after pie now.. And none in the house.. Take care, good luck on the roof. ATP.

Oh wow Jack by the Hedge! I have a lot here in the rented cottage garden, I didn’t know it was edible.....will be adding it to the diet, thank you for the info. We use the yeast flakes, especially the one with added B12. Glad you got your bread flour. I’m still making your bread recipe 🥳👌🏻xx

We had a mooring on the Macc in the early 1980s. Your vlog reminded me it's time we went back and maybe treat ourselves to one of those meat pies. At the moment it would be good just to get anywhere. Take care guys!

@@FloatingOurBoat . Prop walk is the rotation of the prop pulling the boat stern sideways as you back up it will always pull the stern a little in that one direction if your prop was turning the other way going forward it would pull it to the other side in reverse that happens with any single screw boat in reverse it tends to walk sideways ways it can be helpful when backing into a dock once you understand how much it walks but it is easily dealt with but a pain on a long reverse

I’m glad to see you’re both looking healthy and well. Beautiful new chimney! Those tree next to the factory might have given good mid day shade for the painting. For whatever reason it’s apparently better the paint to not paint in direct sunlight. Or at least the paints I’ve painted with like to recommend that 🤷‍♂️. I enjoy your vlogs. Thanks, Jeremy Seattle, WA USA

Condolences on the loss of your friend. Another very nice vlog, thank you! I live in the edge of the sage steppe in Washington State, and we have a wild flower also called Queen Anne’s Lace. It looks similar to the one by the canal. The one here likes the areas that are sunny, but a bit more on the damp side. It is done before the weather turns hot.

Hi Fran and Rich, we’ve just been watching your vlogs. Trying to watch on KZbin - nightmare because I haven’t watched for ages, they’re not showing in order. But got there in the end. Saw that you were talking about pies.... not sure if they’re open at the moment or if they do orders. (You could maybe collect from P.O.??) Pie Minster (Manchester) we had a delicious vegetarian one. I think it was spinach, feta and sweet potato. But I’m sure Fran could concoct something similar onboard Constanze. Stay well, xxx

Hi Lorraine. If you look at our playlists, there is one in date order which may help in future. The pie sounds lovely to me, but I can see Rich's face now if I mention sweet potato and it's not pretty!!

I've been binge watching over the last few days (from episode1 through to the present), and I've thoroughly enjoyed the journey and sharing all your ups and downs. I was particularly unhappy about the experiences you had in my own county of Lancashire (on the Rochdale canal), but that's modern society for you I guess. But I can almost guarantee you'll have a much pleasanter time on the Lancaster canal when you finally do the Ribble Link, which is in my own back yard and an area I know well. And knowing how much you enjoy walking, I recommend walking the route of the now disused section of the Lancaster, from Tewitfield to Kendal. You'll really find that an interesting and scenic walk. May I finish with belated congratulations on your marriage (you are both so well suited and a great couple), and that your recent ailments.are improving with each day that passes. Good luck to you both, and thanks for all you're doing for us land lubber canal enthusiasts!

Thank you for your lovely message David and we'll done for getting through all of our videos. It was only a little hiccup on the Rochdale, nothing to worry about and we also are looking forward to the Lancaster canal.

Barney Leith. The common where I take my dog has a huge meadow, with a track that runs the length and is about one quarter of the width of the meadow from the edge. The major part is already waist high over the whole area with Cow Parsley (Queen Ann's Lace was it?) but the minor part has hardly any. Why is that? Also, what you described as 'Garlic Mustard' and called "Jack by the Hedge", was pointed out to me by a friend (just before lockdown) who called it 'Dead Nettles" (I think) because they grow alongside real nettles, but they flower and don't sting. Good vlog guys, as ever. Thank you.
