Details that I know from the movie: 1. All important characters were actually from their ethnical backgrounds. Shah rukh Khan as a Pathan, Mukherjee as a Bengali, Kamal as a Tamil Brahmin, Atul Kulkarni the guy who recruits him is also a real Maratha. 2. When Kulkarni hands him a gun when he is admitted after the horse accident, he opens the gun from his chest representing ancient Ramayana epic where Hanuman opens his chest to show Ram and Sita inside him. 3. The full name Saket Ram means the old name of Ayodhya again. The birthplace of Ram from Ramayana. 4. In this movie every character is introduced through the dialogue Hey Ram except the man who said it. Gandhi. He never says that word. 5. When Shah Rukh dies, Kamal cries and unknowingly he is in the position of a Muslim worship. He was a staunch Hindu in the movie. 6. Kamal is having delusional problems where he imagines things after the incident. So we are left to interpret how many things were actually real or his delusions. Example is him romanticising the gun as his first wife or him standing alone in a stormy desert and shooting. 7. After the rape scene, next day Kamal is roaming the streets, an elephant is shown with its mahout dead. It symbolises how he too is now left without a guide. He just exists now without knowing what to do next just like the elephant. 8. During the murder of Mukherjee, the same piano which played melody before now plays a very harsh tune when one of the guys push Kamal’s head on the piano. 9. In the climax when the rioters ask who Shah Rukh is, Kamal says he is his brother ‘Bharath’. Again Ramayana in which Bharath is one of the brothers of Ram. These are just my personal opinions that I heard from people and realised.

@@9980552264 Yep. The film failed, inspite of having stars like Kamal Haasan and Shahrukh Khan, and most importantly, inspite of being such a good film. Films which are much ahead of their times fail and are later recognised, cause the audiences art sensibilities are not used to mature cinema or films not falling into a popular 'format'. And that's why even filmmakers and stars avoid making such films coz they don't make money. And this goes round and round, in circles.

Thank god! Lol! THIS is why I've been recommending this film to you since pretty much your first month with Indian content. Now you understand. Not only about Kamal, but about all Indians and Pakistanis since the partition. We had a horribly traumatic bloody birth event as countries. We, as nations are still experiencing a high degree of PTSD symptoms as a result. And Kamal did a great job of bringing the events to life and laying bare the pain felt by the participants. Rick, you've said that before this foray into Indian cinema you, like most Americans, had a very limited understanding of India, mostly a bit of knowledge about Gandhi and his teachings of piece. You now also have an understanding of those Indians who had a much more violent and toxicly masculine martial view of what India is, and were thus in their minds, slandered and dishonored by Gandhi's "cowardly" ways. This was their revenge.

Some say quentin tarantino's kill bill animated scene was inspired from this movie and quentin supposedly admitted this to Anurag during a conversation !! Guna , Mahanadhi, Kurudhi punal, Thevar magan, Virumandi are some of his best work, one needs to watch all these to really understand how good of a performer is he !! And lastly Kamal hassan / crazy mohan (writer) is a legendary combination when it comes to comedy films in tamil but sadly the english subs wont do any justice to those, so leaving them out !!

Would like to Congratulate you for Choosing this movie from Kamal Hassan's Repertoire so early on when you are just started discovering this Amazingly Talented Individual!!! Stories Narrated by more than one Unreliable Narrators (which in this movie is by Character Saket Ram & his Grandson) have being done very few times in the history of cinema & what Hey Ram achieves so poignantly is narrate a story visually from the mind of a Protagonist who is suffering from the Psychological condition of PTSD.. The depiction & Resurgence of PTSD resulting in the journey of this traumatized mind of Saket Ram (Saket is a sanskrit word equivalent for Ayodhya I.e birth place for Mythological God "Ram" in Ancient literary work Ramayana by Sage Valmiki) is illustrated throughout the movie in the form of Hallucinations & Delusions. The Dusshera scene is a testament to same where first the Burning of Ravana's Statue is superb allegory with Ramayana & Intoxication makes his mind draw parallels between making love to his wife & carry on his self destructive mission on Assasinating Gandhi that would help him avenge his first wife's death & his Right Wing Political Ideologies.. The background score in Dusshera scene where Saket Ram is an inebriated state also is inspired German composer Wagner who was Hitler's favourite & reason being that Hitler's Beer Hall speeches were foundation of Nazi Movement gaining foothold before the eventual coup.. In Hindu Traditions there are four stages in every human's life.. 1. Brahmacharya (student) 2. Grihastha (Householder) 3. Vanaprashtha (Retired) 4. Sannyasa (Renunciate) This is superbly showcased in the scene where Sakey cuts his hair & takes a dip in pond in Holy City of Varanasi cleansing himself of all worldly deeds & also suggesting that he is ready to leave all.his familial relations & turn Sanyasi.. Saket Ram's Political Ideologies are also conveyed with many subtexts like where Gandhi is Nourishing Green Plants (Symbolism indicating particular community) that shows some bias .. The scene where Hindu Swastika with a background in "Green" Color transforming to German Swastika (Red Background) as made famous by Nazi's indicating Third- Reich like Fanaticism intended to wipe out people people of a certain community like Hilter's Extermination of Jews.. The German Swastika later also transforms into a Lotus Shaped Figure which again has a subtext which I leave for you to decipher.. I am mentioning all this to only illustrate the dense screenplay, multiple themes that has being showcased & genius storyteller Kamal is & nothing else!!! I would like to also mention one of my favorite scene/dialog in the movie between Gandhiji & Saket Ram where Gandhi says "Most Mahatma's don't admit they are one.. Do you think Ram, I'm a Mahatma".. Ram replies :- "You will deny it if I say you are.. So I Shall deny you another Denial ".. Wowwwww!!! This appreciation & new found admiration for Kamal Hassan was long overdue, glad that you both came round.. Also Nawaazzuddin role was chopped off from final edit as it may not have being critical to plot & like always as a filmmaker one has to take tough calls in edit table to chop off scenes to retain the overall impact of story.. Also Nawaaz was a nobody back then & he is plain lucky to even have got opportunity to work with Legend like Kamal Haasan.. Anyways keep exploring Kamal & there are lot many classics for you to watch & relish!!! M sure in time u will realise that Nawaaz , Irfan, Manoj, KK Menon, Pankaj Tripathi & many others have a long way to go & probably would never catch up with level of Versatility that Kamal Haasan has showcased with this Repertoire in his 61 years as an Actor till date !!!

The point of the scene in the current times was crucial to current events in the 90s (Babri Masjid demolition), showing let’s not relegate all this to the pre-partition past... we appear to have come a long way with cool 90s vibe stuff in society, but things are still the same underneath, and we each have a role in changing our own minds and fixing religious tensions. It was the mark of a bold filmmaker to tread carefully and attempt films like Bombay and Hey Ram in the context of the late 90s

#Rani shines with whatever small or big she does. She has been a part of awful movies but then she was only saving grace of those movies. Watch her in Mardani series, Hikchi, Paheli with Srk and in Hum Tum with Sartaj. She played some very remarkable characters.

why is no one recommending "chachi 420", which is a remake of mrs doubtfire. rick and korbin will also connect to it better because the original had robin williams who was the greatest

I think that you missed to mention the music of Ilaiyaraja. This is the film that Kamal hasan mentioned in the function for Ilaiyaraja. In the function, in front of Amitab pachan, he said that Ilaiyaraja made music after muted the earlier music done by another musician and compose new songs, new music. That avoided Taking new shooting.

Kamal Haasan's friend name in this movie is Atul Kulkarni. He won the national award for the best supporting actor in this film.

'NAYAKAN' is Kamal's best work till date. The movie was also India's official submission to the Oscars in 1988. The character that Kamal potrays in the movie is inspired by Brando's performance in 'The Godfather' . The trailer doesn't do justice to the movie, so please kindly don't judge whether to watch the movie or not solely based on the trailer.

Kamal had researched a lot about this script.. There was a saying that he took a car full of books to censor board to prove he did things rightly in this movie... But he didn't get enough appreciation that he should get at that time.. And Raja's music is a masterpiece in this movie...

20:54 . According to the real police records, Gandhiji's Slippers and Glasses were actually missing from the "spot". Kamal Haasan showed that Saketh Ram was the one who may have taken those.

This is the pride movie of Indian cinema. The subject n the making stunning. Vision & Courage to make the movie twenty years back as this can't be done now. And after so many years even now few discussions will be happening somewhere in the world. As years passing this movie's importance will increase tremendously. Kamalhassan Sir is fondly called as Aandavar.. The classic art creations justify that.

I think you somehow forgot to talk about the music. You started to talk about it, but remembered another aspect of the film and continued talking about the next big things that came to your mind. I understand that you might have forgotten, and I know that you live Ilayaraja. Thanks for an awesome review.

There was a plan to assassinate Gandhi before Jan 30 by the same Godse team who killed Gandhi on the last scene. This plan and its progress and eventually its failure were shown in the background when kamal(Ram) first goes to see Gandhi on Birla Mandhir. You can watch the real story in the background woven into the foreground of fiction which always makes my mind blow whenever I watch this film. The amount of nuances and intricate weaving of reality and fiction in this film is just mind boggling.

The black and white portion is there to show that these communal riots are still going on, even as he's dying. He realised his mistake, but the people haven't.

There are Many brilliant movies. I do not know how many Comedy movies of Kamal Hassan would be with English subtitles. Would not translate well in English. I would suggest, Nayagan, Viswaroopam (written, directed by Kamal) or Moonram pirai ( Sadma in Hindi) If there are people suggesting you to watch Sadma, please understand that Moondram pirai is the original Tamil version. I understand your review on Kamal's Anne Sivam movie as welll, because due to a proper frame of reference the subject of certain movies is lost to people who do not understand the language of the culture. Movies directed by Kamal haasan will not have only the Indian audience in mind so you can watch them and probably appreciate because you can understand. Again Viswaroopam written and directed by Kamal and Nayagan directed by Mani Ratnam are must watch movies

The point of black and white is at the end of flashback after they shot gandhi it turns from colour to black and white because sakethram couldnt confess anymore to him. That's the reason the present is also in black & white. But when sakethrams grandson tells to gandhi grandson about this incident much after sakethrams demise the present turns to colour again

Saket Ram was an unreliable narrator. The factually 'correct' portions of the movie, the "now", is portrayed in Black & White. The past recollections, Saket Ram's memory, is in colour. Since he was suffering from PTSD and was emotionally and mentally disturbed, the colour portions are a mix of hallucinations and shreds of what he thinks he remembers

The black and white sequence have an important dialogue or message. Ram asks his grandson, "still?" That is, is they are still fighting over religion.
