Just saw them last night, opening for the Suicide Machines. I've never heard of them before but wow, I was very impressed by their sound and energy. If you have the chance, go see them. They are much better in person.

When Kengan Ashura came out and the season was out I love the intro right away I had to find out who was this band cuz I usually like to skip the intro cuz I want to get into the anime right away but for this one I always play it thru

I don't know these guys, but at least the beginning part sounded pretty Ska to me. Or Ska Punk, I guess. I only know so much about it, but I think, actual Ska was a Jamaican thing from the 50s and 60s that was like Calypso and Caribbean music mixed with Jazz and Rhythm and Blues that was sort of pre Reggae. Then in the 70s, it became a thing again in the UK, where it started to become a mix of like reggae, and the horns and Jazz influence, but with Punk Rock. Then, in the late 80s and 90s Ska Punk kind of had a revival. That's how I know it. I remember it was kind of a fringe thing that was really popular for a second. Like Gwen Stefani's original band, No Doubt, I think was considered Ska. There was a group called The Mighty Mighty Bosstones that I think were Ska. There was also a sort of related period where old fashioned Swing dancing from Jazz music in like the 20s through 40s, became a popular thing that some people were doing again. I'm not going to go into the whole thing again, but I've suggested the movie "Swingers" to you before, from the mid 90s when all of that was going on. Oh, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was a band that was popular in that scene, more swing though. I don't think you'd call them Ska, but they appeared in that movie. Oh! There was also the Jamaica Ska song from "Back To The Beach". Ha! Sorry, this one is very random, but in like the mid 60s, there was a series of these like beach party movies that were popular. I think it coincided with the fact that surfing had slowly made it's way from Hawaii to California over years, but was kind of a fad at that time in the 60s with the popularity of The Beach Boys music, and other groups like that. So someone of course was going to exploit that by making movies about teenagers hanging out on the beach and getting into mischief. They usually starred Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. Frankie Avalon had been a teen idol in the late 50s and early 60s, who was a good looking guy that would sing romantic songs and make young girls go wild. Annette Funicello had been on the original Mickey Mouse Club TV show in the late 50s, since she was like 12 years old, and then became a pop singer, but was very well known by young men of that generation that grew up watching her grow up on TV. Later, when I was a child, she use to do commercials for Skippy peanut butter, for it seemed like a very long time. Anyway, the premise to those movies was basically that Frankie and Annette were a couple, there'd be everyone surfing and hanging out on the beach all day, to be followed by having late night make out sessions in the sand, under the moonlight, with the sounds of the waves hitting the beach, and of course Frankie wanted more, but Annette wasn't that kind of girl. Then they'd get in a stupid fight about something, she'd start hanging around with another guy on the beach to make him jealous, he'd get angry and try to compete with the other guy to get her back, and then there'd be a surf off, or something, and they'd make up in the end. Some kind of bullshit like that, but that was actually a pretty popular formula for teen movies and TV for at least 2 or 3 decades. Maybe still is. I don't know anymore. Oh! They were also kind of musicals. Like they wouldn't sing all their dialogue, and the whole story wasn't necessarily motivated by the music, but at different times they'd randomly express themselves by breaking in and out of a musical number, that could then be released and sold as a single! Ha! Anyway, in the 80s, they did another movie that was supposed to be a nostalgic look back at those old movies, and now Frankie and Annette are married with kids and living inland in middle America, until they take a vacation back to California to visit their grown daughter that's now living their, and once they hit the beach, it's just like old times again! Ha! But Annette does do a musical number called Jamaica Ska, which must've been the first I'd ever heard of it as a child.

biss if ou like this sound (ska - punk) you might try "less then jake" - "reel big fish" - "mighty mighty boss tones". there the 1st to pop in my head. couple punk bands im not sure alot of folks heard "Bombpops" " Interrupters" no horns but Female leads

This is a great band...it gets that 'up' feel from placing the accent on the back beat with the snare rather than the down beat with the bass drum, like most rock and metal.....Another great Japanese band I would recommend is Dizzy Sunfist....they have a boatload of great songs, including..'No Answer'....'Shooting Star'....'Summer Never Ends'....'The Dream is Not Dead'....They are sort of a punk pop hybrid with cool melodies and positive lyrics....worth checking out
