William, sadly that is the case with most things that are made today. I was a tool & die maker for 12 years, after that I got into the construction trade as a plumber so I’ve been making or building things my entire adult life. I can tell you everything that’s made has a certain amount of pre planned failure to it. That means the product is not designed to last a long time, it’s designed to break or fail after a certain timeframe or a certain amount of usage. As you said in the video, if you want a heavy duty product that’s built to last it’s going to costs a lot more. I have the Sony tough series cards for my Z6 so I haven’t had any problems with those. Thank you as always Will for another great video that helps everyone here with important decision making. You, Sara and the kids be safe bro!

I haven’t had pieces of plastic break off, but I have had a Lexar ‘Professional’ XQD split down the seam where the two halves of the card are glued together. The case literally fell into two pieces as I took it out of my D850, dropping the circuit board on the table. I glued it back together, but was surprised how thin the plastic is in the casing. I’ve just checked my cards and found that another Lexar card is splitting down the sides. Time to get the glue out again!

I had a similar with a Lexar XQD on my Z7. The card would go in the slot or toggle in/out of it. I thought the slot had a problem until I realized the top of the card chipped off and fell inside. I then used an air duster to clean it. That card still works though. I just couldn't throw away a 128gb card.

I had 2 Sony ‘H’ XQD cards where the plastic casing cracked (Nikon D4S). Only handled carefully and never just casually lying out of the camera - so XQD either in the slot or in the card reader. Both cards replaced FOC to ‘G’ but I was told that the heat inside the camera slot was the primary cause of this issue. No evidence of plastic fatigue using the replacement ‘G’ XQDs in the z6 (yet). Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

I have 6 of the old Lexar XQD cards and I've had that problem with one of them. The other ones seem to be ok but when handling them I can tell that the plastic is cheaper then even my Sony XQD cards. For the CFxpress versions I only have SanDisk cards and those have much better plastic then all my XQD cards. Haven't had a chance to compare them to the other brands of CFxpress cards though but from what I hear the CFxpress cards are more rugged then XQD. Would love to switch all my cards over to CFxpress but at the price of the cards i think ill keep working with what i have now.

Great to see you making videos again. Unfortunately, this actually goes a long way in proving the point that having two card slots is essential and the argument that these cards are durable and can't/don't malfunction is a risk I refused to take with the Z6 or Z7. The new cameras are out, they have two card slots and I am ecstatic! But I am glad I waited! :)

@@roybixby6135 Yes, well - Here is the trajectory that Sony Corporate also subscribes to (Nikon, Canon - Please also feel blamed here)... 1. We need to offer awesome products to get into the market, 2. We offer great products (sony: BetaMax, Walkman, Trinitron TVs) with good value and quality, 3. We expand our product line to include not-so-great quality products, 4. The good-quality products make up ever-less of our earnings, as the cheaper products sell better in volume, 5. It’s the same issue with SSD drives where the plastic cracks due to heat that generates. And if it’s an all metal body the heat won’t dissipate fast enough. It’s not just Sony, I’ve had it happen with all my CFExpress cards - Sony, SanDisk and ProGrade.

I live by the maxim that the memory cards (be it XQD, CFE or SD) main point of failure (the housing and the contacts) gets stressed every time you remove it and re-insert it. That's why I buy the best card I can afford, stick it in the camera, and leave it there. When I pull my images off the camera, I do it by connecting the camera to the computer via USB-C. That might not be tenable for your workflow (not sure if it's slower than using a memory card reader, but I've found the transfer rate from the Z6/Z7 to the computer via USB-C to be quite fast), but it's definitely going to prolong the life of the card.

In every period of digital photography, there are always a few tricks of the trade. Back then, it was using many smaller MB memory cards to avoid losing a lot of images if a card fails. Now, it seems to be keeping the card in the camera and use USB for transfer, whenever it is possible. Yeah, I also use the best. For instance, I paid $625 for two 8GB SanDisk Extreme Ducati Edition CF cards for my D3 in 2008.

I had the same card in the D850 with no problems. Thing is, that the Zs use a "push and lock push and release" system. The D850 has an eject button. So with the Zs you have finger presure on the part, where the plastic seems to be very thin and of bad quality. I bought a CF Express card from Wise and at first I didn't get it to hold in the Z6 at all. Them I pressed very hard and it worked. Now to avoid more breaking I push with two fingers at the side of the card. Not very desireable but I hope that avoids further problems. So it is a kind of design flaw of Nikon as well - but it seems to be mainly a Sony problem and they should replace those crappy cases. But they don't...

Although afaik Nikon never released the info on who the actual manufacturer is (Could as well be SONY), I would say that Nikon branded XQDs feel sturdier, it's definitely a different plastic. However, the CFExpress cards are a much, much better option altogether and the price of those is just about the same these days.

Sorry to hear that. I just bought a new 64GB G. On the package, it says 5X stronger. Stronger than what, I wonder? Hopefully stronger than the ones that failed you. :)

yeah ...it's a big deal...hasn't happened to me yet... perhaps Sony thinks everyone leaves them in and writes to storage via the camera I tried that and at 63, I ain't got that kind of time man! I got a fast reader and pull it out every time. Couldn't tell you why it works like that...but even if you left it in....if your shooting weddings....you're gonna fill it up and will need to pull it out anyway. Not Good

Nikon imo should've gone the SD card route. Yes xqd cards are great but the prices of the cards themselves was a prohibitive factor for a lot. Hope CFExpress cards become cheaper than the current prices.

On one of the Nikon Z Facebook groups, there was a person that never took out their XQD Sony card from the Z6. Did USB files transfers only. I believe after 8 months - a year, they saw cracks all over the top of the card. So maybe the heating and cooling of the camera is warping the plastic.

I use Sony card reader when transferring the pictures, and have noticed that the card reader gets warm after a while. I will pay attention to this and remove the XQD card immediately after transfer.

I have not had any problem with my Sony 64gb cards but it is not an accident that Sony products are mechanically inferior to their competitors. They are built to a price point, with maximum margins. For years I had a business that was the largest pro audio service center in the US and were a warranty station for 58 brands of equipment used in recording studios, stage and musician electronic equipment. I had that warranty status solely because a number of ou larger clients had Sony gear, such as Skywalker Ranch and Pixar. Compared to competing products the Sony equipment was always using the least robust materials and were mechanically most fragile. The worst part was their policy of forcing upgrades by eliminating essential parts stocks when a product went out of production. Panasonic was a direct competitor and they had a different philosophy, parts wee available for decades and products were not replaced so frequently so a user got their money's worth due the much longer service life. Before that business, I owned a major 3 studio complex recording studio and had top-grade tape decks made by Studer and older classic recorders by Ampex and 3M. These all were maintained with new parts for decades. Sony came out with a digital24 track tape deck which I bought in case someone wanted to record digitally. In 1984,, it was $124,000 plus a required controller for another $18,000. It was not used that much but 6 months later, wear parts that are to be replaced on a time schedule about every 6 months, but were no longer available....for a model that was only on the market for 1 year! That is when I discovered the Sony corporate policy of forcing upgrades by dropping essential maintenance parts. Digging into it, I found that ALL 500,000 products that Sony makes are subject to becoming boat anchors due to the inability to service older items, in my case 6 months old because that model was replaced by one that cost $154,000. When I complained their answer was that I needed an upgrade. It was not making me very happy losing, being ripped off by Sony for what was a lot of money in84. Now that would be $500,000 When Sony got into digital cameras friends bought them because of their long list of features and they were beginners so they assumed the features were important even though they were built like crap with the flimsiest materials in the industry. One of them stuck with it and used his camera for a few years but in that time he had to upgrade to new models 3 times because of problems and no repairs were possible so he had to buy the newest version. By contrast, all my Nikons were fully supported but never needed it because they were built so much better. So I advise people to think of the true value of their investment and not get stuck in the constant required update cycle. Although I have not had any problem with my XQD cards I am also very careful with them BECAUSE they are Sony branded. All newer cads are SanDisk CFExpress. I never remove the cards, I format them in camera and transfer via Wt-7 high-speed wireless wi-fi. For important shoots that transfer occurs as the images are taken so a copy of the RAW file is on my laptop and FTP transferred to my home server as frames are taken. Nikon has the best high speed RF transfer capabilities with that adaptor.

It has not happened to me (same card, same camera) but I certainly feel the flimsy build quality of Sony card. I am not professional photographer and I don’t use the equipment a lot. Definitely an area of improvement.

I had a corrupted Lexar card a few years ago which was exchanged no questions asked. only problem was I had to pay import duty into Canada, even though it was a replacement. Still using it after approx 15k shots. Got it just before Lexar shut. I thought Nikon was going to update the D850 f/ware to enable use of CF Cards. Pie in the sky methinks.

Will, I feel your pain. The "G" cards already should have been tough. They are, IMO, a lot better than SD (I standardized to SanDisk Extreme Pro only). So far, never a problem with these. The other day I got wind of Angelbird CFexpress cards - certified for Nikon Z matched pairs, even. As Nikon has not certified them, I haven't tried them - and one tester reports a boot time of 4 seconds when you switch the camera on. They however claim extreme lifetime figures. I feel they still need to make a step farther. I am to move to Sony CFexpress Tough shortly. How do you carry/store the cards - when I shoot on location, I have this on a cord around my neck: "Ruggard Leda Case for 6 XQD/CFexpress cards" is water and shock proof and IMO causes no "wear" of the cards. It's built like a small Pelican case. On the business side, my advice is to number the cards and note their use for a year. If you fill each card completely every time, I would replace them after some 40 times. When you copy your shots into your workstation/post-office you have some time to document this per card. My guess is the biggest threat to the G cards may be heat though. Are your shoots so intense the cards get hot, or do they get hot when you copy to the computer? All in all, the format was developed to "never fail" and be physically very durable. Your experience disappoints about it. I would only use Nikon certified and tests I have seen limit my choice to Sony. At this moment.

Interesting. I have not had any problems, but I looked at my Lexar XQD cards and compared with the Sonys I have. The Lexars are just a little heavier, and so maybe they are built with better or thicker plastic. I'm not stating as fact, I said "maybe." :) I agree that for the price, they should be made to be basically indestructible.

And the other issue I have with the G series XQD card is that it is difficult to get out of the Z7, didn't have that issue with my D850. Thanks for the heads up, Sony needs to be sensitive to this and revise their standards of quality.

My D850 had no problem either. Maybe the Z has tighter tolerances than the D850 or the Sony cards Dont. I notice the Sony cards are 3.8mm thick whereas all my other XQD/CFExpress cards are 3.7mm...

The Sony CF Express cards say "TOUGH" in big letters on touygh box, and "5 X Stronger. Do you think they've made them better? They do have a "G" on them. Thanks, Geno
