If you look at history, the possibility of it happening is not extremely low. It's practically a universal truth.

You need to delve into the context of the specific countries where this has happened and of what caused these tyrannical governments though. The most cited example is of course Hitler, but to the people of Germany at the time (other than the Jewish people) it wasn’t a case of the government plotting against its people, it was a government aligning with the anti-semetic views that dominated the ideals of the country at that time. It was tyrannical to America, not to the German citizens overall. In America, if one day the government decided to move on its people, how do you think that would go over in a country rooted in diversity and freedom? They would need the military to enforce those rules and that just wouldn’t happen. Just as an aside though, I’m not for disarming people, I just think the tyrannical defense is outdated and it would be more likely that we’d be at risk of oppression from an invading opposing country than one of our own.
