That sucks. I've had that happen before. We can take 2 deer at once in mass. I dropped a 155 lb doe,30 seconds later a nice 6 ptr walked in an I took him. Figured I'd give them time to bed down and expire. 5 or 6 min after,I had a racker come in,probably after the scent of the hot doe I had taken. And just like him,all I could do is watch him. Said hi to him but he didn't say hi back. Flagged me an off he went. Never saw him again. Probably walked up to another hunter like that who still had a buck tag. The buck was on a trail that came by the tree 2 feet away, and I was standing on the ground. This same thing happened to me. I was 16. There was a buck that everyone in a 5 air mile radius was after for 6 years. He was a main frame 7, year after year. He showed up on camera like clock work but only 1 person had a shot on him his entire life till he was taken. His last year alive I was checking trail cameras, it was dreary so everything was quiet. I heard a branch snap, didn’t think anything of it, closed up the camera and turned around. Here comes the buck, he walked right along side me, about 2 arms reach away, could hear him breathing, he eventually noticed me, probably from my heart beating out of my chest and was gone. 2 weeks later a neighbor had shot him opening weekend, he was 8 years old and scored 162”.

First day in pa i leaned up against a tree after climbing a hill. Looked to my left 10 yards away and a big head and rack just appeared over the ridge. We both looked at each other in disbelief because we were so close. I tried to duck back behind tree but he started running as soon as he made me. I didnt want to chance wounding a running deer like that in hardwoods so i let him go with no shot. Biggest buck i ever saw.

What makes you think this BIG Ol' Boy was "beaten?" He could just be out wandering his neighborhood looking for some other Young Buck to put him in his place. I'm glad to see that the OP didn't "tag" him and I hope the deer has MANY more seasons of NOT being harvested if only for his rack. I've never hunted for a "rack" type deer (besides you can't EAT the horns) and I only shoot younger deer with a reasonable (?) sized rack to let the bigger guys populate the species with hardier bucks as time goes by. But I don't hunt "spike" sized deer, either. Arizona quit allowing hunters to harvest doe deer, which I disagree with, but I'm not making the rules.

@danielcarter553724 күн бұрын
Yeah, that's a good one to let walk, even if you had a tag. He's been around a long while, and most of the meat would be like eating an old shoe. My cousin shot an old buck very similar to this one several years ago. He said he should've just had the whole carcass ground into burger and sausage meat. Even the tenders and backstraps weren't all that good. It was an interesting buck though. The right side of his massive rack must have got broken off some year prior and when it grew back it was cocked slightly to the rear, but was otherwise symmetrical with the otherside. He also had a limp like the one in the video. You gotta respect a big old buck that's been around for that long. They didn't have an easy trail getting to where they are now!
@Tam0de28 күн бұрын
Poor dude, appears to have a limp. But nice rack, a 5x5 typical. But why did he keep walking towards the man? He was looking at him, he knew he was there. Depending on where the wind was blowing, he could've smelled him as well. I thought all wild deer are skittish around people?
