On the PS4, At that first lake, if you don't wait until morning and you just walk into the lake in the middle of the night, you fall through the map. There is no escape once that happens - you have to revert to your last save which will be back within the map borders. EDIT: on the PS4 I think all water is bad. I was twice able to walk on the water briefly, but both times I began to sink and then fell through the map.

PS4: There are horses outside the map Northwest of Doverhill They can be captured, tamed, and ridden outside the map. Once you get off the horse, though, it stays put and will not come when you whistle - you have to go back to it to retrieve it.
