As I have seen cowboys in movies grasp the top, turn it upside down, add water and offer it to the very thirsty horse!!! Are horses next? Or a lariat, a saddle, etc??? I'd just as soon see a gunless Cowboy, by the way... the "bad guys", did all of them wear black hats? What about the white hats?

I've never made a cowboy hat in my life, so I'm no expert nor about to correct you in any way. But what I thought of are the faux leather journals I've made and wanted to share the idea with you. I was thinking, while listening to your thought process, that one of the aspects that bothered you was the tape strips showing, and so I think this would certainly help with that aspect absolutely, and help make your hats stronger and more leathery looking. If you were to make your lil hat form as a base shape, you could then cover with tiny torn pieces of thin paper. I would advise not to use actual tissue, as in what you blow your nose on, but something thicker than tissue paper. Scraps of leftover wrapping paper are excellent, newspaper or brown paper. You want proper paper, but nothing too strong. Tear up teeny tiny pieces, making sure every piece has torn edges not straight edges. Using a tiny paintbrush and thin glue, cover the entire hat inside and out with layers of the scraps, making sure they are all overlapping each other. Don't worry about wrinkles and don't try to smooth them all out ironed flat. Any rough parts of the base shape can be softened out by adding extra pieces of overlapping paper, and whilst wet can be almost moulded into a smooth edge, for example where the top of the hat adjoins the crown. When dry, paint as you did anyway, using a VERY light coat, almost dry brushing, and kind of punch the paint on rather than strokes. Let it dry and build up thin layers patiently, some parts will look missed but that's ok because subsequent layers will overlap those. The tiny torn edges begin to take on a leathery crease effect, rather than looking completely flat like the tape. This is why you shouldn't use a pulpy paper such as kitchen roll or tissue, because the layers disappear into each next layer and look like one thicker layer. Tissue is perfect for a plaster, stucco, concrete, pottery type of effect, because it blends in so easily, but for leather it needs to be actual paper. When I do leather effect in larger areas I use the Amazon brown packing paper, but that may be too thick for such teeny tiny hats. You did well to create a leather look with just paint so please don't take me sharing as any form of criticism. I know that masking tape CAN start peeling away from itself if paint get in between the sticky layers, and of course it looks more sharp round the edges. The paper overlapping would take your tape forms to the next level, especially in terms of keeping them in their shape and preventing tape peeling issues. By wrapping them inside and out, and smoothing extra pieces to soften lines, once dry they literally can not peel or separate even again. But like I said, I'm only speaking out loud as it were and not criticising AT ALL. You were far more patient with your initial design process than I'd have been that's for sure. I don't know if you can buy it over there, but do you have those liquid bottles of shoe polish with a sponge tip dauber on the top? They are generally less pigment saturated than traditional tins of real shoe polish. They are more of a clear waxy fluid with a hint of colour in. Well those in different shades are perfect for creating a leather look, although I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it for tiny hats necessarily. But if you already have some or can buy it in Dollar Tree or other bargain store, it can be handy as an alternative to paint for a larger leather surface effect. Whatever you choose to do, these are so cute anyway, and I was especially impressed with your patience and determination to figure out a realistic pattern without having any prior pattern experience to go by. I'm sure even when they make real ones the pattern could, in reality, be slightly "off" because they're working with leather not paper, so yours had to be exact. They can stretch leather and shave more of the backing off or whack it to get it to take on the shape they're looking for, not so easy with flat paper tape! So well done! 😘 xxxxx
@Lauras-tinyview5 ай бұрын
@@tamielizabethallaway2413 Wow thank you for taking the time to type up such a lengthy reply. Great advice on the faux leather! I will have to give it a try and experiment with it for sure. It sounds a lot like paper mache. I wonder if I’d still be able to shape the hat easily like I did mine to give it the curled edges. Probably would have to be done while still wet I’m guessing. I will try it both wet and dry. When I started making the hat I originally just wanted to make a hat shape. I wasn’t really trying to create a leather hat. I was going to use fabric to construct the hat. I was wanting it to have more of that traditional felt hat look and feel. So possibly by applying the paper mache I can get the structure. Then try to figure out how to give it that felt hat feel. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas. I will definitely have to play around with it some more. 🤠
