From what I have seen of the show, I would disagree. Tom is there to test Jane and Daria’s friendship, since it puts Daria in a position where she feels threatened by tom and believes she’ll lose Jane. However, since she was doing this unfairly, she didn’t realize how much she actually gets along with Tom. The only issue is that they never really focus on Tom by himself outside of his relationship with the girls. If your favorite part of the show was Jane and Daria’s banter, then I can see why some people thought the quality dipped.

@@michaelguinnee-sh9xd Sadly, Tom was one note character. He was meant to be Daria's first boyfriend and his start with Jane added necessary drama required to test the friendship. People dont see this. Tom was smart and able to spar intellectually with Daria. A shame the writers turned him into a Harvard legacy kid at the end.

I liked him in the cast. It added drama and conflicting feelings in Daria we had never seen before. If he wasn't in the show I think it definitely would've become boring.
