Many apps don't even check certificate authenticity, and even it they do the authenticity can be faked. It gets even worse than that, since the certificate itself tells the application what the signing authority supposedly is. Everything running over the net can be hacked and surveiled, assuming the attacker has control over the involved infrastructure. USA providing target identification, surveillance and target data modelling as examples is a whole different story. Same in Ukraine war. I got a ton of fact checked source links on my PCs and servers, since I had nothing better to do in my free time :(
