This is a bit of a long one, and I hope you stick with me! I'll take you through Icon's Pliers Wrench and some of the subtle differences with Knipex, with some thoughts along the way. Thanks for watching!
A correction - I mistakenly said "cast marks" or "casting" repeatedly in this video. Both of these tools are forged. What I'm referring to is the shape/marks in the die created in the manufacturing process used to achieve the shape of the tools that are similar. Apologies for the mistake!

The patent lasted long enough for Knipex to get my money. I have every size and two of my favorites. That said, I think the copy will be a money maker for them. Only thing is, the price is so close I would still buy the real thing. Gas there and back and I can get the Knipex delivered to my door for the same price.

If you like the thicker rubber on the Icon's Knipex makes a version called The comfort group so you'll get less of that mentally feel. The Icon seem like a nice copy but as people said the price is too close to the originals I'll take the German made ones for that little price difference

The Knipex comfort-handle models go for a small premium over the "regular" ones (anywhere from ~$63 to $75 or so). That's not a small premium over forty bucks (over 50%), and essentially in the Snap On level of pricing. I think Knipex is delivering world-class quality, so I don't have issues with their pricing, but I think most DIYers and even a lot of pros can get all the capability they want from the Icon pair and save useful money. They're well-made and work equally as my Knipex pair in my hands. As I said in my video, they definitely don't have all the fit-and-finish my Knipex have, but I don't think they're low-quality in terms of materials or function. I appreciate your comment!

Boat mechanic for the last 20 years here. I got my first pair of these off the Snap-On truck, the 8 inch I believe. My first thought was no teeth on the jaws, which is important when doing warranty work. My second thought was that the jaws open and close parallel to each other, ensuring a secure fit to a hex head or square head. And after using them I discovered you only need to have a hand on one of the grips to turn a fastener, which is very useful is tight spots. Lastly I come across a lot of pins in the marine industry, none of which you want to bite into with say water pump pliers and leave teeth marks. Even though they have smooth jaws these pliers really do grip on things very well and leave very little in the way of witness marks depending on the metal of the piece your working with. I been able yo remove some extremely corroded pins with these pliers. I have used the Icon version as well and they seem to be pretty much the same to me. Personally I would prefer the Knipex over any of the knock offs. Knipex makes some really nice tools, I also own their water pump pliers and mini bolt cutters, and various sizes of these pliers, which are hands down better than the competitors in my opinion. Just better built, sturdy handles and hardened steel where it counts. The mini bolt cutters I have cut up to 3/8 bolts with, and that would be stainless to grade 5, grade 8 I have only cut up to 1/4. Side note here, being in the marine industry I often find my favorite tools don't rust as much. And the Knipex won't rust for the exception of some surface rust. Any sort of lube on them helps but isn't necessary. And working around salt water i notice which ones I like very quickly. Snap-On isn't the answer all the time unfortunately. I have noticed that my older Knipex have lost some of the finish material on the face of the jaws and in the slide groove for changing sizes. Regardless they still work like new. Good luck out there.

Yeah, those are very useful even if they don’t have any teeth I have the 12” and i calculated considering the width of an average hand If you have a 30 pounds grip strength (witch is way below average) , you’ll end up with aprox 300 pounds of force between the jaws. No matter the emplacement of the fastener between the jaws You have a 10 to 1 ratio. By comparison, with 12” cobra’s With the same 30 pounds, you’ll end up applying 100 pounds at the tip of the jaws and 200 pounds at the closest of the pivot. So this is a huge strength of these pliers/wrenches. You literally have a vice in your hands.

I have the older set of the Knipex and they have never let me down. I just had to do a chain adjustment on a new ZX6R motorcycle and discovered I didn't have a socket for the the nut that holds the rear tire, so I gave the Knipex a try and worked like a charm, this tool just keeps on giving. Another great use is for removing tungsten wedding rings. I work in an ER and once in a while you'll get a patient with a swollen finger and you can't cut them off, but you can crack them off with this tool and because of the limiting range, you don't crush their finger.

My Fujiya pliers wrench made in Japan was only $40. At that price, I'll take the Japanese tool any day. For that matter, they only make a big one, so I plan on getting the 5 inch model and 7 inch comfort grip model directly from Knipex. Eventually, I'd like to try the Olsa and Hazet alternatives as well. The Icons are nicely warranted and acceptable, but I would only buy them at 40% off like my gold Icon ratchets.

I have one of these Icon pliers wrenches and it's great. I have a few pair of Knipex pliers and when I saw the price of these I jumped all over them. Icon also is making some dead on clones of Snap on pliers and I have bought quite a number of them. Their Doyle brand might as well be Mac. Are Harbor Freights tools the exact same quality as the tool truck brands? No but they are pretty damned good for the money and I think pretty close. When the REAL version is as cheap as it is…. Just get the real one. Icon is $40, real one is roughly $55’ish? We can afford $15 more… I got two real Knipex Cobras for $15 each from a local dude on Marketplace that said his ex-girlfriend is a distributor, awesome price, huh? So I was fine with paying full price for the deluxe Knipex pliers-wrench. I got the black finish with comfort grips, she’s puuuurdy 😎 Harbor Freight is great when the real tool is a stupid $500 and Harbor Freight’s version which can do the job “pretty well” is like $50. I do like their effort in going after “tool-truck” brands, go Harbor Freight! But sometimes their prices are a little high on their “high-end” stuff. Do your research and shop around. I’m not loyal to just one brand so I’ve got an assortment of tools 🤓

The real one is generally closer to $70, but seems to have dropped closer to $60 these days. I don't think you can reliably find the Knipex 10"/250 for $55 (and of course HF does the occasional % coupon). As I said, I would like to see it at $35 list, but the Icon is a manifestly nice and high-quality tool. Since I owned a set of the Knipex Pliers Wrenches already, this Icon pair is going to be in the beater/travel role. I *do* research almost every tool purchase - I'm persnickety about things I use regularly being 'fiddly" or crap. That's put all kinds of brands in my garage. Off the top of my head there's Icon, Quinn, Carlyle, (modern) Craftsman, Sunex, Carpri and Tekton (brands made in Asia), but I also have Hazet, Knipex, Wiha, SK and Snap On (I'm not sure where to put Lang, and of ). There's not a bad tool in the lot.

I'm a DIYer, so my tools aren't used all day every day. I'm also a guy who doesn't abuse tools and cleans them before I put them away at the end of whatever I'm doing. I've had my Knipex pliers wrenches for multiple years, and they've been used a lot. As for the Icons, they were just-released when that video was made, and sold-out/not-in-stock in a lot of places, so I figured folks might be interested in seeing a side-by-side. I did use them for a few things and test them out on some others before doing the videos, but ultimately this is not a rocket. It's a pretty simple tool that happens to work fine.

@@themessygarage The teeth most certainly do carry all the force when the handles are being squeezed. In 10 years of using Knipex pliers I have broken the teeth on one button. I replaced the button and the pliers were good as new. I have never broken a frame.

Ah I think it’s BS it’s created by Knipex. Hate rip offs.

It's not a rip off though. And there is nothing wrong with 'clone' tools, so long as you dont pretend it's not the real thing.

are all your tools bought from the company that invented it? lmao. every tool you ever used was invented by one person and copied by another

The Pliers wrench has been around for a long time. Knipex has a good take on it, but they didn't invent it.

They can copy the design all they want, but if it is built for Horror Fright, the metal quality will not stand to Kinipex. My Kinipex are forever

Having had the actual tool in my hand and used it a fair bit at this point, the metal quality is fine. I don't have the ability to test the metallurgy (and neither do you), but the eye-test and the use-test would say the Icon metal is good quality.

@@themessygarage I'm speaking about the reputation of Kinipex metal.. their hardness is beyond most products.. But, I did not contest whether icon is decent quality or not. If I had a choice between channellocks metal or Kinipex metal, I'd take Kinipex. I love Channellocks brand, but no brand of pliers have maintained the jaws or teeth longer than Kinipex.

So made a bet with my plumbing apprentice regarding these. I told him if the harbor freight lasted more than a month with the same use/abuse as my knipex, I’d buy him a dinner at a nice steak house. The icon brand wore at the adjustment grooves due to the torque we put on these installing and working on 1-1/2-2” piping (backflows, regulators and stuff) The exchange/warranty was easier with the icon just because we could walk into a store and swap them out. However, the same use/abuse has been put on my knipex for the last almost 4 years. In a pinch or for average/homeowner use I think the icons would do well. For hard working plumbers & pipe fitters I just can’t see these being worth the slight cost difference

They work identically, other than the Knipex has a slightly-larger max opening. That hasn't been a benefit to me personally. As I mentioned and showed in the vid, the adjustment is slightly smoother with the Icon. The only other main difference is the softer handle on the Icon (Knipex does offer comfort-handled versions for most of their tools)

i hate these knipex comparisons where someone who has a phone camera thinks they know something about anything. if youre making a tool review and you pull out a fresh of the boat pair of knipex GTFO. the laser etching that disappeara after one day of ACTUAL WORK is atill there and you think youre qualified to pollute the internet. youre making the internet a worse place. it should teach from a place of experience and knowledge, not feelings and wanting like or more subscribers

LoL - tell me how you really feel! I used a couple of my Knipex pairs today as a matter of fact. I can't say I'm sorry that I take care of my tools. They work reasonably hard maintaining five vehicles (changed the oil on three of my cars today) and my house, and my Pliers Wrenches are among my favorite tools. I'm not a pro, but I'm a pretty experienced DIY'er doing actualy and offering my real opinions. I'm not sure where that counts as "poisoning" anything, much less the internet, but of course you're entitled to your opinion. Happy trails!

You have an interesting opinion, shame no one cares lmfao. And, do you think some mongs comment holds more value than someone with a camera? Actually comedy gold. Keep up the good work.

The vast majority of people that watch something like this likely are just home gamers. You wanna see tools that work hard, watch AvE. Even he buys from the hazard fraught now and again. I bought the icon to see if I like the concept. Now I will buy the real deal. Icon for the house; and Knipex for the shop. Knock offs are great to experiment, especially if it is gonna wind up in the trash. Can't tell you how many expensive gun tools are just junk concepts.
