Once again, Thank you for this video! I have used your method for Years, and have produced wonderful earset. New puppy in our home as of last month.....and even tho I thought I remembered it correctly, upon re-watching it, it refreshed my memory. This is the Easiest, non-messy method ever! Plus, it is free of any harsh chemicals that can cause irritation. And no nasty glues to remove every time. Lasts up to two weeks.

Thank you very much for sharing your technique in a slow, methodical, and detailed way - so helpful as I prepare to undertake this myself. I have a 6 month old Sheltie puppy, who a friend has done this for me, but he is VERY active, and requires multiple glueing/tapings. (I couldn't believe how well behaved your Sheltie is!) I'm off to your website to see if I can see the results from when this video was made. Thank you very much!

This is so helpful! I'm new to this and don't want to mess up my puppy's ear set. Very clear explanation and the visual demonstration is clear too.
@revoakes898410 жыл бұрын
LOL It doesn't hurt the puppy in the tiniest way, assuming it's done correctly anyway. If you catch hair in the tape it can hurt, just as it would if you got gum in your hair. But the puppy will immediately tell you all about that! Mostly they just enjoy being handled, as puppies do--though like children not always sitting quite still for it! Folding the ear over doesn't hurt either, and one doesn't press the crease but folds it gently. It's not necessary, no, unless you're planning to show the dog, but it makes the expression of the dog so much sweeter and delightfully tender that it's worth a bit of effort to set them correctly.

I noticed some comments thinking this is to make ears stand up, that is incorrect! it is to pull the ears up on top of the head, and to tip to top of the ears forward, this is how you set a collie's ears and shelties as well, this does not hurt the dogs in any way! and for those asking what type of tape this is Japaneses tape you can order it online at Wicket's By Mel

Great video! Can you tell me if there is a point where a collie is too old for this to work? Ours is 11 months and his years keep sticking up. Thanks!
@revoakes898410 жыл бұрын
At his age you MIGHT be able to train the ear tips to stay down, if you go to work and do this faithfully for a few months.

@JnMdeV200012 жыл бұрын
Nice tutorial. We also have a rough collie but are worried the ears will stay tipped over. We want full standing ears (unlike whats considered "beautifull" for this race). Could i follow your tutorial and say stop around 6-10 min. in order to encourage the ears will stand? I know often scottish shepherds ears will stand by themself, but we rather not leave it to chance. :-)

Can you set an older shelties ears? Or is it already too late?

What's the purpose of the twisted part of the tape that joins both ears? Why not tape them separately? That should be easier and let their forehead hair grow a bit more freely, no?
@WildeManorCollies10 жыл бұрын
Camera Shy.. NO! it doesn't hurt them at all, the only way it would hurt is if you pull or rip the tape out without adhesive remover like Zoe's and you can get that at Wicket's By Mel as well. but in some cases the tape falls out on its own, but the puppy can find it irritating if you catch his or her hair in the tape, But no this will not hurt them , if it did you would see the collie reacting to it as if it hurt, and clearly you can see, this collie wasn't bothered by it at all, Japanese tape is like medical tape not like duck tape

I have a 8 month old show sheltie and I have not been able to get her ears to stay down... I will have to try this as a last resort. I just hate that she now runs away from me for how often I have to do her ears. I am not trying to hurt her it just is so annoying redoing them 3 times or more a day and her ears get so red... Having 3 other dogs that are bigger than her does not help either... *Crosses Fingers* Hoping to the dog gods they will set...

I have a question, how long do you have to keep their ears taped, how often do you have to change tapes?
@revoakes898410 жыл бұрын
It's a good idea to keep doing this till they're maybe 7-8 months old, with 2-3 days for the ears to "rest" and settle between tapings. If you do it correctly they'll stay up from days to even 2-3 weeks at a time. If you don't you'll be at it at least daily and get the pup very bored and tired of its ears being handled! LOL That's why you want the very best method. Mike Cheatham is one of THE best, too.
@jenann1237 жыл бұрын
Connie Liu I usually change the tape every week or when it starts falling off. And it usually for my collies takes about 2-4 months

well my second sheltie way back in the ^80s had huge ears. at the time i was told to use chewing gum .Ialso used bluetack and masking tape, just as well cos she 'd have looked awful with her huge ears , Her mother and son had normal size ears.so i left them . I just couldn't leave cassies .

Jasminka I don’t think it’s cruel, just odd 😂 I love my collies wonky ears 😂
@cadecollie9 жыл бұрын
Yes this would mainly be for show dogs because the judging criteria requires the ears to be tipped. Breeding and showing dogs is a business for some people and for others, just another way to have fun with their dogs. I show my dog and agree it would be nicer to leave the ears to mother nature, but then the dog wouldn't be as "showy", nor would he meet the standard for his breed. It's really no different than a woman wearing make-up. We just look prettier with it on.
@Itsvulpixbitch9 жыл бұрын
I have a question. Why do you do this? Why changing the ears of the dog? Why not let them have them as they were born? I assume this is for show dogs? I mean how does this benefit the dog?? Even if it doesnt hurt the dog it seems wrong to do this only because YOU want the dog to look a certain way to fit YOUR standards, without benefiting the dog at all. I mean why would you not be happy with the way your dog looks? And just let it be? Correct me if I am wrong.
@Orahwilde9 жыл бұрын
+Itsvulpixbitch Collies ears should tip naturally and many do, but setting the ears before they develop helps to insure their natural ear set. during teething most collies, shelties and other breeds of dogs ears will rise and fall some even flip backward, the cartilage has not yet developed so it's no different then someone wearing braces on their teeth, just because they want a pretty smile. but many of these dogs are in fact show dogs and would be excused for not having the correct ear set that many of them naturally have but also sometimes need training. and in actuality the benefit is not just for the owner to have a dog with a correct or beautiful expression but the tipped ear actually helped to improve the dogs hearing as the sound resonates longer bouncing off the ear leather, helping them hear better out in a field. Hope this helps.
@Itsvulpixbitch9 жыл бұрын
so its just for your own sake? because you want your dog to be pretty? Thats exremely selfish. I'm pretty sure it doesnt benefit the dog at all and im also pretty sure it does NOT make it happier.
@Orahwilde9 жыл бұрын
You must not have read the whole comment? it does help improve the hearing for field working dog. not everyone is going to want or need it and that is okay everyone is entitled to their own opinion and options. but remember not to be nasty about it when people don't agree with yours.
@Itsvulpixbitch9 жыл бұрын
I'm not trying to be nasty or disrespectful i just think it's awful when people put their animals through unnecessary simply for their own liking. It's terrible. It's a completely different story however if it's actually NEEDED. But for people doing this for their own enjoyment and simly because they like the look of it (and don't like the look of their dog just the way they are) it's, once again, selfish in my opinion. As you say though, people are allowed to have their own opinion, I simply believe they should reconsider their decision if they simply do this because they like the look of it. Is it worth it?
@Orahwilde9 жыл бұрын
I have both show and pet collies for those who are not show-able or those that are just simply pets we don't followup on setting ears we leave them to there natural state. some naturally will tip and others wont,but it is necessary for those that are active and showing in conformation, because they would be disqualified with a prick ear, these dogs will then be judges on weather or not their future would be to bring in the next generation or not. so for showing it's necessary but for a house pet it's not.
