I bought a dog from a shelter the day before she was to be put down. No one wanted her due to her 3's (shaved, skinny and scared) and the vet said she had Lupus. As a volunteer there, I felt sorry, adopted her and then her fur grew out, her nose healed and I put weight on her. She turned out to be a rough, tri colored perfect animal that I'v had for 7 years now..(p.s.: the vet was wrong:)

There is no match for the devotion I see in his eyes! He loves to half climb into my lap (can’t fit his whole body there!) and gaze at me in a way that portrays undying loyalty. A fairly good but rushed film. We have had Rough Collies for 50 years. At the moment we have 3. The 3 colours that are allowed in the British show ring. They are the sable and white, the tricolour and the blue merle. I find that roughs keep very clean themselves, and yes, they do have lower doggy odour than some other breeds. I do not brush every day. I have a very wide toothed comb for general tidiness. I keep the feet clipped tidy and the fur from the lower hock at the back. It does not take too long to give a proper comb and sort out. It is all according to which tools you choose. Our 3 roughs delight us everyday. They are our family. Please do not have them if you are out all day. They love your company. They like to be loved, talked to and played with. They are the most beautiful of the breeds with a nature to match. Oh, dont bother trying shows. The dogs are lovely, but that is as far as it goes. You dont need it. Just enjoy them. Make them happy and they will return the complement.

When we got our Rough Collie, he was on a farm and was primarily used as a stud. He seemed to only be a working dog and had not had much loving experience with humans. We brought him home and started to show him his new life, which he seemed to appreciate and learned to love. We found him to be like a wild stallion and decided to get him neutered. He has settled down and is much more relaxed and extremely happy, especially when out for a walk. He is the most beautiful animal I have ever seen and his coat is silky now. He is a great pleasure! I can definitely vouch for their typical behaviors. Mine is only half rough collie (x border collie) but he's definitely a true collie at heart. The watchdog part is so true, my boy is very good at watching and barking but oh so scared to bite when it comes down to it. He has a big mouth but a scared little heart. It's amazing because he senses if visitors are friends, even if he's never met them, or just random strangers. And he definitely LOVES his people. I think he still wonders why we don't sit him down on a chair at the table during dinner... We go out, he must go check if the yard is secure and cat, bird, rat, car, and lawnmower free. He feels left out if we don't entertain him enough. He'll literally lick you, go sit next to you as in "look what a good boy I am", and then sing like a Husky to demand attention. He even sings in his sleep :D

I had a rough coat black, tan & white collie I raised from a puppy for 13 years and it was one of the greatest dogs I've ever known. Something I noticed about all the information I've seen about collies is that no one ever mentioned what a bonus it is to talk to your collie. When they say these animals are smart it's an understatement. Earlie on I got into the habit of talking to him like I would talk to anyone else and his reactions were something you don't see everyday. My back went out then shortly after that I fell and broke a hip. His sensitivity and companionship through all the pain I believe is what kept me alive. He was amazing. I use to tell people when they reacted to his canine intelligence that in the next life I was going to be the dog and he was going to be the human.

Some collies have a unique personality. My childhood and teenage companion was a flat coated collie. He was extremely protective and had the guarding instinct of a German shepherd. Every winter, no matter the wheather, he was laying all night at the stable door. Guarding the cows inside. Only my dad, me and my brother were allowed to pass. And woo to the unsuspecting stranger that would enter the house when my mother was there alone. Then he really could be dangerous. RIP Spits (1971-1988)

As a Sheltie owner, EVERYONE thinks my dog is a Rough Collie 😂 I’m looking into adopting a rough collie as a companion dog for myself and my Sheltie. Since the two breeds share a lot of similar personality traits, I wanted to see if they had any major differences other than size (and sometimes aggressive Sheltie barking). This video was very informative. Can’t wait to adopt a Collie looking for a good home! ♥️

I grew up with a tri, and she was like a 2nd mother to my 3 brothers and I. She crossed the bridge when I was a senior in highschool. She lived a wonderful 14 years with us. When I worked for a veterinarians office that was connected to a grooming facility, a woman who brought her blue merle headed white in to be groomed told them she needed to find him a new home because her daughter was pregnant and "collies aren't good around kids". The groomer came over and told me, knowing my love for collies, and I adopted him the next day. Other than his habit of playing in his water dish and thus making himself muddy all the time, he was an absolute sweetheart. As he got older and developed age related hip dysplasia, I took him to water therapy and had special vet treatments and playdates. After he crossed the bridge at 13 years young, my sister-in-laws aunt, who happens to breed and show collies, knew about everything I had done for Aragorn, and knew I was struggling with my Multiple Sclerosis becoming worse, decided to give me one of her pups. That was 6 years ago, and Sorcha, the current Sable ball of fluff in my life, is a constant source of joy.
@DragynGirl2 жыл бұрын
@Samson 92 I know! And that's part of the reason I adopted him, I couldn't see him going to another family that didn't know anything about collies. Unfortunately I had to euthanize Sorcha last week. She had several grand mal seizures out of the blue, with absolutely no warning or other indications of being sick. I had been treating her for a hygroma on her right front elbow, but other than that she showed no signs of anything. At her last vet visit 2 moths ago her bloodwork came up all normal. When I took her in to the emergency clinic, the vet thought she may have had a brain tumor. He offered full workup and care, but did caution that because of the severe seizures she would have already experienced much brain damage and her prognosis was poor. He also said that even if they could get her stable and the seizures controlled her quality of life would be poor. With that information, I elected to help Sorcha cross the bridge. If she was in pain from a tumor, she never showed it, her demeanor never changed, her appetite never changed, she always seemed so happy. That's one of the hardest things with collies, they don't show their pain, they are so stoic when it comes to pain.

My parents are on their third collie. The first one they got as puppy. The other two were replaced dogs. The current one is very friendly but also protective. He loves to play! Encloses garden. He is quite restless and needs people around - to know where his “herd” is. Since my parents live in town, there are a lot of people w/wo dogs and vehicles passing on the street. He dislikes bicycles or fast-moving cars etc. (Besides other dod) He gets totally crazy when he sees bicycles. Curiously, he does not care about fireworks. He has been trained to handle those sounds. He is also a breeding dog. He has no problems with the cats. Although, he loves their food! Collies need a lot of activity, attention, and love.

I've had three collies. My last passed away a month ago and it's been hard, as always. One health concern not mentioned is MDR1 gene mutation. Most collies these days have this, many owners are not aware. It's important to know because it makes a big difference in what kinds of medications and treatments are safe. PLEASE HAVE YOUR COLLIE TESTED. BE AWARE.

It’s a good idea to not give any collie ivermectin. The breeder I bought mine from told me she tests her puppies, and they were all negative, but it’s a good idea to just not risk it at all. I’m surprised it isn’t more common knowledge.

Most of the Lassie movies were from the 1940s before the TV series. Hip dysplasia is more of an abnormal formation of the hip socket than a disease. I've had six and a half Rough Collies. Sadly, old age has taken them all from me.

I had a rough coated border collie mix that I got as a rescue (her previous owners could not care for her and her pups because they had more dogs on their property than they could provide for - basically she was a "country"/ outdoor dog from West Virginia, if that gives you any idea of how she was treated). She was the sweetest thing ever, even though she never quite got the concept of obedience training (no, you do not run out in front of a car while in pursuit of a squirrel when I take you out to pee - yep, we doubled down on recall training after that!) and was a bottomless pit when it came to eating, and a snoring/farting bed hog, but I loved her to pieces and was devastated when I had to put her down 2 years ago at the age of 13 due to spleen cancer.

I had two ,a tri and a sable. The Tri had a wicked sense of humour, And Both loved to play hide and seek in the tall grasses. They would run off in different directions and then jump up and bark to get my attention, then run away. I would play along for a while. Then I would hide in the grass. They would get worried and the hunt to find me. They were great fun. I miss them terribly

I've had 5 rough collies. They can be snappy, skittly and nervous. One dog I had was well bred with no known health problems. He had the eye condition, with recessive gene in one eye. He mananaged ok. Two I had would viciously fight sometimes. I don't know why they would have the odd fight. They are a nice dog. They need lots grooming. The fur behind their ears is very soft and silky, it knots very easily. I often had to cut the knobs out. Dropping their coats is a long proccess. A good groom will help. They also often have a 'potty botty'

We breed the older lines of farm bred collies known a Scotch (Scottish) collies. Our collies are smaller (40lbs to 60lbs) , more agile, apt to hunting small game, and great herding animals.

I've got a brown one (arguably a 4th colour) - she's a harlequin - which I think is a gene defect. Of my 4 Collie dogs, this is the smallest and most affectionate dog I've ever known. All 4 have very different personalities but they are all lovely and enjoy life.
