Hi-Fi Stereo VHS - Poor Mans Open Reel?

Did this a lot in high school. My vhs deck had such a nice roll off and warmth in the low end!

Did this on a HiFi Betamax machine. The quality was excellent!

DVD sounds more compressed. VHS wins.

I thought so too. The VHS has a more open sound especially the snare. Thing is the DVD is the source for the VHS.

Thats crazy! So I can use any old hifi vhs thing to do this?

For the most part. Obviously there are differences in quality.

I have an old Walkman that has better sound quality than the crap they try to sell consumers these days. Never tried VHS, though.
