Italo disco became a genre in the late 70's and gained popularity in the early 80's with artist like Change "A Lover's Holiday", BBQ Band "On The Beat" and Firefly "Love Is Gonna Be On Your Side". If you like Kool & The Gang "Too Hot" and "Don't Look Any Further" by Dennis Edwards and Siedeh Garrett you will like it too!
Right after death of radio disco, Italian producers began stepping up to fill the void left by American artists who no longer deigned to record any disco music. For example Laura Branigan's "Gloria" and Magazine 60's "Don Quichotte" singles were immensely popular utilizing synthesizers to create electronic sounds you could dance to. A more recent example is blackbox.
Giuliano Salerni is an Italian artist turned producer who put together a studio band called Hi Gloss. He wrote a song with Phil Hurtt who wrote the Spinners "I'll Be Around" and came up with "You'll Never Know" a jazz flavoured mid tempo soul song that featured the sumptuous vocals of Bonita Taylor that perfectly fit with its slow and sensual music track that allowed dancers to get close in the late hours of the evening. Luther Vandross is on background vocals here along with Phillip Ballou, Benny Diggs and Maeretha Stewart.
Released on Prelude Records, the song charted US disco at #31 in 1981 but was a lot more popular in the UK where it peaked at #11. Since then it has become a staple on smooth jazz and R&B radio.
