Doctor Kildare first came on when i was 12, just starting junior high (1961), lots of romance feelings for boys my age and for gorgeous amazing celebrities, so beautiful and talented. I made my mom buy me a Dr Kildare shirt, at the Broadway, it was sort of like those old fashioned shirts doctors used to wear, buttons on the side and just solid cloth in the middle section. it was a teen fashion in the early 60s because of him, it was white, and i wore it school proudly. I got the 45 of the record, Three Stars Will Shine Tonight, and soon got the album. The 60s were rich.

I had two different Nehru jackets, that I made from the same pattern, as my mother always wanted me to use a new pattern more than once to "get my money's worth out of it." All those things were so important to us then, because we didn't get a lot of new things. My parents were just too frugal with money, since they lived through the Great Depression.

Dr. Kildare was a top TV program during the classic age of TV. Very good stories and the medical aspects were well thought out and based on realistic medical pathology and diagnosis. I remember a case of Pheochromocytoma which Dr. Kildare diagnosed against more senior opinions. By coincidence I just included this in a medical test I just gave.

In an interview he said he grew up in Beverly Hills where his father was a successful salesman and they appeared as the All-American Family, but his dad was a working alcoholic who came home and took it out on the family behind closed doors. He said he was a pretty little boy and his father allowed male friends to take him out for the day. Makes you wonder what might have happened to him as a child. He went on to say his parents didn't approve of him becoming an actor at all.

Only in recent years did I hear he was gay. But back in the heydey of his tv show Dr. Kildare, he was an American star "heartthrob." And the show spawned the successfully mass-merchandised "Dr. Kildare" white doctor shirt (with the stand collar) ... even little kids wore them. Fun times! American culture was young, and one mass uni-mind, cheering squad.

This is my favorite Richard Chamberlain song. I remember seeing him sing this song for the very first time, on a Dr. Kildare episode, starring the late Diana Hyland. Her name was Lili and she was dying. He sang this song to her while they sat under a tree. That's all I remember.

Definitely not Yvette Mimeux, but Diana Hyland. She was a med student and he sang it to her whilst they were dancing. She wanted to be a surgeon, so had to leave him. She doesn't die in the episode (Season 2: Love is a Sad Song).
