The Video8 tape might have been recorded in LP mode and might be that the D8 camcorder struggles getting and or keeping the signal.

@EmeraldCoastDigitizing you need to turn the digital8's TBC option off in this case, then it will work.

The same thing happened to one my families tapes. I put it in the basement, forgot about it, found it 7 months later and it worked fine. Maybe it had to do with temperature?!

Plastics from that age tend to shrink overtime. It's possible that the tape opener or the reels were stuck before, and the plastic shrunk slightly, causing the reels to move freely again.

All of my home videos circa 1996-2006 were all recorded on a low-end Sony Handycam only capable of recording Video8 footage even if some of the tapes themselves were advertised as being compatible with Hi8. Considering your revelation that I came to find out the hard way, it’s too bad the original camera itself can act a little too finicky at times and forcibly try to eject the tape during the slightest degradation if not subject to the most ideal of circumstances, so I had thought of getting a video deck but they’re notorious for bad caps making them costly to replace.

With the customer Hi8, turn the digital8's TBC off. It's the TBC of the camera causing this.

I have a number of 8mm and Hi8mm tapes, fortunatly I still have the hi8 camcorder that recorded the Hi8 and it works fine. Capturing has worked fairly well. However I unfortunately have some "ME" tapes (metal evaporative tapes) and they are impossible. These are not critical tapes but tuning these ME tapes leave so much crap on the heads you will never get thru one tape without stopping every 5 minutes. Have you had any success with maybe "drying" these tapes with heat while forwarding and rewinding? I really don't want to put these tapes back in the camcorder.
