I have been a singer ALL MY LIFE, countless features, solos on projects, the whole nine. I have work with such an impressive list of people..... BUT HER?.... I would love to just be in the SAME ROOM with her has she sings and creates. I am positive that even though I have over 43 years of classical piano, house, gospel, you name it..... That I would learn SO FREAKIN much from her about tonality, breathing, construction of harmonies (which in my circles I am one of the best) and overall bad ass-Ness in 3 hours that it would change the way I approach music for the rest of my life. Love this and every other project. She is AMAZING.

This song reminds me of a vivid memory I can't forget-I was probably 14 or 15. I took a nap in my room and woke up to the most intense sunrise or sunset of my life. My entire room was bathed in a bright reddish-orange light. One side of my room was lined with bookshelves with glass doors, and those doors were tinted in an orange glimmer. I remember waking up in awe. The thing is, I still can't figure out if it was a dream or not.

My take away from this song (not that anyone asked): is truly romatinsizing our lives by being present and enjoying the most mundane of things. She creates such a beautiful visual of the room turning red as the sun goes down and she describes it as being inside her eyelids (you get that when feeling the sun on your face as you close your eyes). the raspy warmth in her voice just carries that emotion through so well. Beautiful song and an awesome Band. I must see them live in concert before I die

It's amazing to me that the song only has six lines, but they are arranged into a full-fledged masterpiece. Reminds me of The Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" in that way, as it, too, only had a few lines but each iteration of those few lines made it differently remarkable.

I met these alien beings in Chicago after a show one night, and Nai told me she remembered me in the crowd because my rings blinded her as I recorded some of the show. 😂 Just getting even, Nai...as I've been blinded by the sheer brilliance of Hiatus Kaiyote from the first listen. 🙏🏽🙌🏽👑💎🌈☮️♥️

I love how everyone is noding according to their respective appreciation of where the beat is. It's very telling. As a musician, I can feel, watching them, how they all "live" this song differently, in their own way. And how bonded they are. All this is composing a picture so beautiful, so deep, with a level of precision in the expression only obtainable through genuine love and complicity. I know why I cry almost systematically listening to Hiatus Kaiyote : it reminds me how powerful and warm being part of a band can be. And the lack of it has created a hole deep as the ocean within my heart and soul. You guys, in part and locally, are filling it in the most gracious way.

Hiatus Kaiyote’s lyrics are like Rorschach inkblots. Nai’s delivery is like she’s transforming the English language into something unfamiliar, where the listener can impress their own meaning onto it.
@starrybenchstudios
@starrybenchstudios 3 жыл бұрын
The lyrics, to me, are about an approaching ending that requires entering a safe haven and an ability to savoring the final moments. Red means both danger and gorgeousness to me, and it feels like she’s in a place of great safety, one that is both beautiful and secure. The red hour immediately suggests danger to me, but the way she sings the lyrics makes it feel like she’s glossing over it, so she doesn’t focus on the danger. The sunset in her bedroom exaggerates the presence of the ending (as opposed to it being simply outside her window). The places she’s “in” are interesting to note. A flower and her eyelids. One external and one internal, suggesting that she’s reached a deep place where all of nature connects. The final line creates different meanings based on how it’s sung. “I don’t wanna be” implies she doesn’t want to exist, but then the line is completed by “anywhere but here.” Maybe the “be-ing” is a state of existence that seems fabricated compared to the inner sanctuary of the red room. The delivery of the song is really what ties it all together for me. With each iteration of the text, Nai Palm get more emotive and higher in pitch. For me, it’s almost paradoxical: on one hand, it seems like Nai is getting stronger with every repetition. The way she sings “I got a red room” almost sounds like bragging. On the other hand, it sounds as if she’s regressing into a baby’s voice. If there wasn’t a video, I could imagine her crawling into bed and rocking herself into a fetal position. But it feels like this regression into an infantile innocence IS the strength that she is singing about. It something that comforts her to the point of sleep (the ending sounds like she tired herself out and is being lulled to a haze). To me, there is this complete sense of vulnerability that leads to a profound strength (it is called Mood Valiant, right?) that all beings possess. It’s a reality that’s more real and pure than the reality “outside”. It’s a reality that restores childhood to the point of infancy. It’s a sense of an ending that leads to the beginning of who we really are.
