Wow, I salute you for saying the truth and still having almost 70k followers. If you would say what you say about all DAPs sounding the same and about the "need" for balanced on some audiophile forums or even YT channels, you would be crushed. I'm glad I've found an audio reviewer, who thinks reasonably and says what he thinks, not pouring snake oil like crazy. I do have the R5 Gen II and it's okayish, bough it some months ago. If at that moment M300 would be available, I would absolutely choose that device, because it's much smaller, lighter, faster and so on. Thanks for a great review!

As I return to your review, after acquiring the DAP highlighted, I appreciate all the more you explaining how this doesn’t feature a previous track button, despite having a switch that seems to designate that function. At first, I thought my player was faulty. I also think the high rating is warranted for what this player aims to achieve, premium audio at an affordable price. I don’t mind not having a balanced option since I consider this DAP stress free to carry about, never worry about dropping it or any other frets which accompany a more expensive player in the outside world. The TRN TA4 pairs surprisingly well with this DAP, keeping with the inexpensive theme.

So I appreciate this review because you originally sold me on the Fiio m8, but I've had it for 3 years now and the battery life is draining bad so I was looking to upgrade. For 200 bucks? ⁠@@wahid-lg1kkno, it resamples in-app which is the reason i stuck with the hiby player. you can check this yourself in the audio settings and clicking “audio info”. it shows you the process and it goes through a lot of things before getting to your headphones. Hiby Music and USB Audio Player Pro use the internal DAC but UAPP doesn’t work as of late. I tried and it freezes/doesn’t play on the m300 just recently. It gets stuck “playing” with no sound until it crashes. You can get it to work by playing something else, it instantly kicks on when another source is active. I know another reviewer who loves UAPP had the same issue. Stick with Hiby Music, it’s not the best UI but you get used to it and it’s built in so your battery isn’t going to die any faster, unlike using UAPP which was a battery hog and made my m300 heat up like crazy.

(now it's v.1.30xxxxx don't remember) I bought the device after I watched your review and I happy with it. it's convenient fit for pockets. The problem (for me) with phone + DAC dongle is the volume control. Either you have 2 volume rockers which makes it so much effort to reach the desired volume. I mean raising one, lowering the other. Or you have only phone volume which has limited volume steps. Usually in phone + dac combo, I can never have the exact volume I prefer. On the other hand DAPs usually have 100+ volume steps which make it perfect, at least for me.

As a user of small COWON players that used to run 40 to 100 hours on a single charge with pretty good quality sound, I approve of M300. This is probably as much as a great company can squeeze out of an Android based device and keep it affordable. I am getting a blue colored one this year. And then I will no longer need headphone jack and SD card slot on my phone anymore.

💯 agree with your points on DAPs sounding mostly the same and balanced not being all that great. I do still prefer having a balanced output on my DAP tho. It's a quality of life thing for me because I don't only use my DAP with IEMs or headphones. My car still has an aux and I use my R5 saber in line out mode to save battery. I like to keep the 3.5mm jack in line out and I plug all my headphones and IEMs into the pentaconn jack which I keep in phone out mode. That way I don't have to keep going into the menus to switch modes everytime I get into and out of the car. I'd love to have a button or a switch on the DAP to easily toggle between phone out and line out, but the multiple jacks is just as convenient for now.

If you start with anything start with a dongle DAC. Cheaper and usually the money spent is more towards audio stuff. Like the DAC(s) or amps. The iBasso D6 just came out, two ESS ES9219C DAC chips, 320mw@32O. Been interested in some reviews of that and for under 80 US you can get the HyBy FC4 with dual ESS Dacs. Fosi Audio DS1 ESS ES9038Q2M DAC, always interested in some of the newer ChiFi stuff as they have some great (and terrible) products. Would love to hear the Questyle M15 but it's the same price as this.

Spotify lets you specify the SD card as where you want downloads to go. Not sure about Apple Music.

Hello sir, I live in India and have a budget of around INR 5000(50$). I want to buy an IEM but I'm confused between CCA Rhapsody, Simgot EW200, 7Hz Sonus and KZ PR3(all of them are around the same price bracket) [you could suggest anything else as well] My first IEM was the Moondrop SSR which I loved because of the details and soundstage, I was blown away with it's quality(a lot of people found it excessive but I don't think I'm sensitive to any frequency) Please tell me which is superior is which aspect, I want to get something that blows me away with it's clarity, detail retrieval, soundstage(keep in mind I'm not sensitive to certain frequencies that people call to be shouty). Please help so that I make the best decision.

First off I am a Millennial and generation labeled products are a weird idea. I have one of these and I like it. I have a 25 gb or so and growing mp3 library. I download my music from ITunes and then convert it to mp3s. Amazon is an even easier option since it downloads as an MP3 already. I use KZbin music to find new music for my library. I organize each genre by folder and it makes it easy to choose the type of music I am in the mood for. This player works fine with lower powered headphones. It pairs great with the Fiio JT1’s and the Meze 99 Noirs.

I guess this proves background noise floor is mostly a circuit design thing. DACs for the most part should all sound exactly the same (no audible difference).

As a gen z I can say I actually did do some very small games and i use the lanyard loop.😂 Also surprising that you got 15-20 hours in battery life, I got a lot more 🤔 Also nice to see we agree with balanced output, so many of my comments were about it not having 4.4 and many people straight up rejected the m300 because of that. Its a great little DAP, I actually have been using it more for podcasts and audiobooks recently.

Hi, I often like to have the option of repeating a song and also skipping to the next one, usually when jogging. You mention that the M300 does have a button to skip to the next song, but none to go back to the previous one. Is there no way to configure one of the buttons to do this? This is a big deal for me. Maybe the almost phone-like form factor? Because that's something I'm looking for haha. Other DAPs also have the same shape and has big screen but they're THICK, and I don't want that. Could have been a bit bigger though; on their website they advertise the screen for music videos, movies and Tiktok, etc., and while I don't use Tiktok, I'd want to watch KZbin, so a bigger screen would have been nicer. I think I've only seen a couple other DAPs that has this phone form factor. Also agree on the balanced output thing, I believe they only sound "better" because the higher power output can more adequately power the more power-hungry sets, other than that I think the difference is placebo

Most cellphones don't have a 3.5 mm jack. If you are using Bluetooth headphones, having a dap won't matter much.

Depends on your phone and I probably haven't used your phone. But mostly no, unless your problem with your phone is that it doesn't get loud enough or it makes too much hiss sound, this DAP probably won't sound significantly different.

The DAP i've been waiting for, is one with full phone functions so i can have once device. 0:29 No, the latest version is 14 now and the most important thing about android 14 is that it gets rid of he 48khz resampling issue. So stuff like poweramp doesn't resample.

Well, I have a Samsung S23+ with all the latest updates including Android 14. Aand it's still resample CD res 44.1 to 48 kHz. Sad. From what I understood the SRC bypass on the 14 is not mandatory nor implemented by default from AOSP but rather just a template for how to do it. It's up to the phone manufacturer whether they want to deploy it or not.

I thought one of the main points of a DAP on Android is to bypass the built in Android audio stack, at least as much as possible. Surprised this is 13 because it's not an easy thing to do which is why a lot are on older versions, especially by the same company. Android is also open source which allows them to do this as you already mentioned.

Both should be more than enough to power your IEMs, I wouldn't worry about that.

I think it's marketed towards Gen Z because of the OS & updated chipset. I was looking for a dap that does streaming well for someone like me, who has a "dumbphone" but came up during the streaming era. Tidal and Qobuz make up my library, and I use Roon to combine the two. This is why I chose the M300 over the R5 ii. The M300 is better equipped for my use case. The average Zoomer doesn't have a local library or isn't interested in amassing one.

I would personally take the M300 for the Android stuff -- Poweramp is my favorite audio player interface, and I can sync my music library automatically with Google Drive. The R3G2 does have nicer build though.

@@SuperReview I have a few Android devices, including the Ibasso Knobomination and the noble but knobless HiBy R6 Pro Gen II. Still, the there is some appeal in the Hiby OS all by itself, without all the rest of the Android fuss. The R3 series are very capable devices.

That little gen Z thing is a lanyard hole and it came standard with every portable electronics back in the day. Many devices still have them, especially camera, speakers and many professional equipment.

I later found out that my M300 DID have a plastic screen cover on it -- and it was the plastic that was scratched. I removed it and no scratches now, months later.

It's Android, does things an Android device does -- has Google Play store, can download Tidal, can stream. But it doesn't have cell service so if you want to "stream on the go" you'll need access to wifi, e.g. a hot spot.

hello there! How is the bluetooth performance on this device? Can you usee it as a receptor for a smart tv or PC, just like the qudelix 5k or fiio BTR5? Also, is it possible to use the M300 as a usb dac for a PC? I am considering going for a small android dap to replace my Shanling M0 pro, the tiny screen ended up being a dealbraker for me, otherwise its a great device. Sorry those aren't functions I used on the M300. Typically when I've tried using a DAP as an external DAC, there's usually significant latency -- fine for music but not for video.

I have Hiby R6 pro 2, Hiby R5 Gen 2 and Hiby M300. Also I have tried some others. Trust me, getting any other than M300 is a waste of money. Yes, Hiby R6 Pro 2 sounds better, but not more than 10-15% IMO and you have to pay almost 4 times the price of M300 and get a chunky player with sharp edges, bad battery life, weak wifi module and worst of all, horrible button configuration. Whenever I try to press a button on one side of R6 pro 2, another button from the other side is pressed simultaneously. Also the buttons are super easy to be pressed accidentally. On the other hand, M300 worths every penny. The only thing I would complain beside what Mark mentioned is the lack of existence of a global MSEB configurator. The MSEB only exists inside the HiBy app which I wish to have globally, because I also listen to music in KZbin or original Qobuz app. Out of 5 stars, I give it 4.5 stars. Price to performance, 99.9%.

Hi, nice explanation on the user experience. On M300, is there a way to get previous track by using the available buttons? like double click or something? Coz sometimes I'd like to listen a song repetitively

@@zatjca Hi. Unfortunately not. In Qobuz and KZbin apps, double clicking surprisingly goes to the next track, which is identical to clicking the other key. In the HiBy app, it doesn't do anything. Since at least it has a weird functionality in Qobuz and KZbin, there's a hope that they fix it in the future updates. But overall, it's not a deal breaker for me because if you use a DAC+Phone combo, you'll actually have no keys and you have to do all operations on the screen. In M300, in case you want to repeat the song, just easily use the screen. For 200$, you pay a bit more than a DAC price, and trust me, you'll be happy with it.

I have the sony nw-a306 USA version. I want to be clear tht it is the USA version because sony capped the power/volume output on that version. So I am very disappointed with it. I was thinking of importing the Japanese version which is not capped. But hell it's still more expensive than this m300. I may just try the m300 out even though I love the form factor of the nw-a306. It's smaller, the cassette screen saver, and those buttons on the side is what I love about the nw-a306. The capped crap just turns me off. Sony messed that up. Anyway. FYI yall. If you want to take the m300 to the next level install the wavelet app from the play store. Trust me. It will make this thing sound even better. Your welcome lol.

Continuing from my previous comment, I would like to share with you the tip that I found for how to operate the "previous" track/station button when you have it in your pocket, or in the darkness. You have to press three times fasstly, instantaneously and accurately the play/pause button. It needs a little practise, but it is useful!

@@donvittoriosierra Even Pixel 6 with Android 14 wont give you bit perfect apple music. There are few Android DAPs from Hiby, FiiO, iBasso, Shanling, A&K etc., that can offer SRC by pass, so you can achieve bitperfect on streaming apps. However, pixel 6 will definitely have a better streaming performance than m300, but you have to compromise on the portability as there will be a dongle dangling around.
