AustinofEarth Trust me you need to save your cartridge ammo and shoot black powder. "They"(govt.) will ban lead ammo and/or a whole class(es) of ammo calibers they deem "for military/police use only". You may say if they ban lead how will I shoot black powder? You can buy a hundred pounds or more of it at around $2.50,and that will be much cheaper than 50 rounds of post ban ammo on gun scalp sites. If you had to you could use tin and bismuth to cast into balls. They both are low melt temp,however more expensive,but after a lead ban on cartridge ammo and/or caliber ban(s) it will still be cheaper than any panic buy ammo. To save money on black powder shooting at the least you must make your own round balls and that is the most easy one. Next to save even more is to make your own powder. To save even more is to use flintlocks(use real black powder only for flintlocks) and buy flint from non gun stores(like rock collecting stores) and shape&sharping them. I bet many of you forget Obama's boy John Kerry on behalf of the USA signed the UN small arms treaty and they WILL come for your guns in the future.

I hate to disagree with Hickok, (because I respect him,) but during the Civil War, the 1858 Remington, though clearly superior to the 1860 Colt Army in every way that mattered, was not issued in great numbers due to Col. Colt's influence with the Army Ordinance Board. It seems that Col. Colt was very chummy with the Officers in charge, and he was selling his revolvers to the Army at a considerable profit. Remington could beat Colt's price, with a better pistol, but the Ordinance Board just seemed "uninterested". Of course, the troops in the field knew the Remington was better, and many officers purchased them as their personal weapon, but try as he might, the Ordinance Board kept stonewalling Remington. The story goes, that in desperation, Remington arranged an appointment with Pres. Lincoln, offering him a live demonstration of his pistol verses the Colt. Lincoln was quite impressed by both the pistol and the man, and it's said he later had word with the General in charge of the Ordinance Board, and rather pointedly _suggested_ that the Board might wish to reconsider adopting the 1858 Remington pistol. Oddly enough, the Army Ordinance Board suddenly had second thoughts, and the US Army began purchasing the 1858 Remington as a standard issue sidearm.

talon55130 - I'm not familiar with the Spencer story, though the Spencer Repeating Carbines were issued in some numbers, and with notable success, to Union cavalry, in the last couple of years of the war. As to the *Colt vs. Remington* procurement story, the gist of it seems to be pretty well documented. And I wouldn't be surprised to learn that something similar occurred with the Spencer Repeating Rifle/Carbine. I would also note, that generally, the US Army, (like most,) tended to be rather resistant to adopting new weapons. However, the *Colt vs. Remington* story was more one of insider corruption and price-gouging, rather than the relative merits of either weapon.

The same old story.... In more modern times it was a similar political influence that cause the US to adopt the M14, when the troops testing possible rifles much preferred the FN FAL, a superior rifle in every way. Same deal with the 7.62 cartridge, everyone except the USA wanted a specially designed round (I believe it was a 7mm) which was ballistically superior, but that one influential US general wanted an American cartridge for the Nato countries and he got his way, so the FN was converted to 7.52 x 51... Politics beats engineering....

When I shoot black powder, whether it's metallic cartridges or in muzzle loaders, I use a solution that is commonly referred to as "Panther Piss" among black powder shooters. You make it by mixing RV Anti-Freeze, Murphy's Oil Soap, and High Proof Rubbing Alcohol. It is , or at least used to be, the most popular black powder cleaning solvent among black powder competition shooters. An old friend of mine, who is a veteran competition black powder shooter (and a champion at that, holding several records here in Oklahoma that remain unbroken) taught me to make this when I first got into shooting black powder. I've compared it to a lot of store bought solvents like Hoppes No. 9 and am pretty well convinced that Panther Piss is the best for cleaning black powder.

Great video, I would only add that they weren't loaded that way during the Civil War unless the issued, pre made paper cartridges were not available. The military paper cartridges used a conical bullet in a paper cartridge with the correct black power charge. The conical had a grease ring near the base with sealed the chamber and made loading and reloading much easier and faster and prevented chain firing from that end, also the correct size tight fitting percussion caps prevented it from happening at the rear of the cylinder. Smearing the cylinders makes a real mess and can be avoided if a slightly oversized tight fitting ball or bullet is used, It should shear a tiny but visible ring of lead when rammed into the cylinder. Thanks for all the really great videos you make, they have given me many hours of enjoyment, I almost feel like I'm there having all that fun, please keep making more. Jim
@hickok4512 жыл бұрын
@northanc, Could be, but the grease is as much for bullet lube, too, I think, to keep the powder residue soft in the barrel. Black powder can cake up and harden like cement in a gun barrel pretty quickly if it's not cleaned or there's not enough lube.

Like many things, there's more than one correct way to load & shoot these things. I only have single action revolvers, and since getting a Pietta-made 1858 Remington, I've started using it for 90% of my shooting, and I use a different "recipe" than Hickok45. First is the cylinder pin. I rub mine down with lithium grease. You can get it at any auto parts store. This acts as a barrier to keep the powder fouling out of the cylinder pin bore, and lets the cylinder continue to turn freely shot after shot. Second is the powder. I don't shoot real black powder any more. Many of the subs make less fouling that the real block powder. My preference is American Pioneer, but you ask five BP shooters for a recommendation, and you'll get five answers. Instead of putting grease on top of the bullet, I use the wonder wads Hickok45 between the bullet and powder. The main thing is for the wad to swab down the sides of the bore, cleaning off the loose powder and preventing chainfire. They make reloading much quicker, and much cleaner than using an over-ball lube. 25 grains of black powder is a nice, light target load that is very accurate and produces low recoil. For higher power, you can always up the powder charge. My other suggestion is never to dry-fire the gun without a percussion cap on the nipple. BP revolvers have a heavy main spring, and the hammer can deform the nipple without a cap to cushion it. Again, I am not saying this is the "Only" way to load one of these. Many people have found many other loads that work just as well. This one happens to be my preferred formula, and one I can get excellent results with, still have a cylinder that turns without loading up with powder, and the 100th bullet will be as easy to seat in the bore as the first. That being said, part of the fun of these guns is experimenting with different powders & subs, charges, and lubes, and finding what you think is best. My 1858 Remington clone has become my new favorite gun, and I shoot it more than I do my Uberti Cattleman in .45 Colt. It's that much fun!

Remington 1858 New Army: Clint Eastwood's main revolver in Pale Rider. You can see him swapping cylinders in the last shootout.
@charliep20598 жыл бұрын
That was a 1858 New Army - but it used cylinders converted to cartridges. When he changes the cylinder in that final scene you can see the cartridges. I think a lot of the cap and ball revolvers were converted to use cartridges after 1870. Conversion worked well with the 1858 because the cylinder was easy to swap out - compared to the old Colts.That scene recently sparked my interest in the Remington New Army - I may buy one - just for fun.
@ReonMagnum8 жыл бұрын
CharlieP In Clint Eastwood's westerns that pre-date 1873, many of the characters are seen using converted cap-and-ball revolvers. Most likely for convenience, so they can portray the correct guns of that era, and still use blanks. The New Army was probably the fastest reloading revolver in the Old West era, even faster than the S&W Schofield (no speeloaders back then).

If you use the right size ball you do not need the lube. The org. cap ball revolvers manufactures never mentioned lube when loading. To prevent chain fires NEVER FIRE THE REVOLVER WITH UN CAPPED NIPPLES WITH CHARGED CHAMBERS! Most chain fires are from the cross over flash on the back of the cylinder with either loose fitting caps or the absence of caps on a charged chamber..
@kathryntruscott63516 жыл бұрын
I disagree... I have fired many thousands of rounds with 6 loaded and 5 capped in Western shoots. I have never had a chain fire, not ever..... Chain fires happen at the other end, usually the result of an out-of round chamber leaving a small gap at one point around the ball. A wad or grease will close that to any cylinder gap flash. On getting a new cap'n' ball revolver I always do two things. The first is to measure the chambers, and the groove diameter of the barrel. Usually the chambers are a bit tight. I then ream the chambers to .001" larger than the groove size. That alone can halve your group size, and eliminate chain fires with or without lube. Use a projectile that is a couple of thou bigger than the chamber mouths just to make doubly sure of a good seal. Happily my recent re-arming with 1858's after a period without shooting revealed that both pistols and the matching carbine all had identical groove diameters, so all the cylinders are all reamed to the same size, giving complete interchangeability of cylinders.... handy. The timing of the pistols was a bit off, one was worse than the other by about 2 degrees but that was easily corrected. They are really silky now, and have wonderful 2 and a half pound triggers with a 'glass rod' break. For mass produced replicas, they are amazing... I have shot originals in first class condition, and they are no better, in fact in some ways not as good. That's modern CNC machinery for you.... Hope your Remingtons are still performing for you.... :-)

@mannys91306 жыл бұрын
You need lube, whether it's a lubed wad behind the properly sized ball or a plug of lube in front of the ball like Hickok45 shows here. The lube keeps the fouling soft. Sealing the front is a secondary function. Chain fires are easily prevented by both tight fitting caps that are fully seated, and balls that are .00" or .002" larger than the cylinder throat. The cylinder will shave the edges of the ball so that it fits perfectly into the chamber. If you don't have a small ring of lead left at the chamber throat, the ball is too small.
@jaycousland98354 жыл бұрын
ekajeht ,thanks,good to know as I've had many chain fires,even with a Crisco,butter,or mixed beeswax topping.Usually 2 shots,but once had 5 go off! With my stainless 1858,the smoother nipples don't hold on to the #11'a as well,and it's been suggested to either crimp the open end(yikes!),or go to a #10 cap.

Plus my favorite line at the gun store can be used "I want to give you cash for this firearm and I don't want to fill out any paper work." I bought mine at cabelas and I didn't even show my id, they also let me walk around the store with it in the box.

Hey hickok im sure you get this all the time. But ever consider doing a Black Powder revolver cleaning vid?

+SeanTaco :D I´ve just ordered one Armi San Marco Remington 1858 today, and cleaning will be my nightmare for a really long time :D

I always pull the grips off quick, put it in the sink, boil a tea kettle of water and wash it down. Boiling water will wash it off and evaporate and dry off right away. Run a brush down the bore quick, wipe it down with some gun oil and put r away

hickok45- Great Video!!!! Thank you so much. My Dad and I started into black powder last year and got bit by the bug. I started on the 1851 Colt Navy and just got an 1858 New Army Texas (brass framed Remington). Like you, I only use black powder. There are lot's of folks who swear by the substitutes but I don't trust the charges. Thank you again for the video..... Warm regards, 8StringKeith

Update: I took it out to the range and had a blast (pun intended) with it. Used .454 balls, #10 caps, Pyrodex pellets, and Ox-Yoke wads between the powder and ball. I whipped up a few paper cartridges and will test them out soon.

@gojira1968 , You know, truthfully, I"ve had some trouble with Uberti percussion revolvers, too, and I don't even shoot them that often. I've yet to have any problems with my Uberti 1873 rifle, though, and I've shot it a great deal.

Go ahead and get one, I have more fun shooting those than any other firearm. It is not nearly as messy as he makes it out to be. The felt wads are the way to go. And I have read that the 1858 Remington had the same basic ballistics as the .45 acp. I also have a Kentucky .50 cal pistol and love it, at close range it has the power.

I have a great experience with Pedersoli S.349 Remington Pattern replica. My record one time shooting was 240 shots in less than 4 hours with two cylinders (20 loads per cylinder). No glitches at all. Continuous and smooth operation of all mechanical parts all the time using home made grease and bullets. It is important to use good caps like RWS 1075 or even RWS 1075 plus with an extra charge. I had some problems with these standard in last hour of shooting as they had some problems to get the spark through the nipple to the powder but when changed to the stronger ones problem was fixed. One more important thing is to always remember to load wads or other spacer (I use semolina) between the powder and bullet to make the bullet as close to the exit of cylinder and entry to the barrel as possible (its easier with semolina porridge). I went from 24 to 18 and stopped at a tiny load of just 10 gains of 3F powder to get the best results like less than 5cm (2 inches) group size on the target at 25m (82ft).

Been shooting BP since before 1960. With Rems I carry additional cylinders. Also, loading can be simplified and is much faster with powder pellets, a wad, then the ball and finally a capper. I do not use a lube over the ball, The wad seems to perform fine for me, reducing fouling. I make my own and lube them with a combo of melted wax and crisco and then when dried I punch them out of heavy felt. . Proper size balls seem to prevent chain fires. Need to shave a small lead ring when forcing the ball into the cylinder. I use a .454 with the italian repos and a .457 with Rugers. When going to the woods I do seal the ball by using wax over it, and the cap as well, to prevent any moisture from entering the cylinder. So even in the rain I have not experienced misfires. I shy away from the 1851's and 1860's for the lack of a backstrap.

@andros800 , I haven't ordered any for a few years, but I used to order it by the case from Maine Powder House. I'd usually split a case with somebody.
@AZTLANSOLDIER133 жыл бұрын
For anyone wondering, it's not necessary to "cowboy load" an 1858 for safety. You can rest the hammer between chambers so no risk of misfire

ya, i agree it's a piece of history, a soldier at that time came to the battle field with one single firearm and combat knives, machetes or axes. That is exactly what we need to respect

I've fired many firearms. My favorites are as follows... 3030 winchester lever action, 50 cal desert eagle, marlin 22 and colt open top 44 in brass. I honestly love the brass and wood visual effect. Hell with modern weapons. I am in love with historical guns. I've got 4 colt open tops. Two 36 and 2 44 cals, as well as a side by side coach, 2 50 cal muzzleloader rifles and now my first Remington replica. I'm sorry but I'm not going back to regular guns.

Loved it! I have a hawken style rifle in .54 that is a fine hunting implement. I can load 80grains and shoot roundball thru it, about three rounds in the same hole at 100yds...and put a minie slug in there with about 100grains powder and take large game with it. It's got a 32" heavy octagon bbl and a good old brass fin front sight...that's all ya need pardner. :-) Thanks for the trouble, I love seeing black powder arms being fired. Take care hickok. Life IS good.

There were cartridge conversions for these guns and others like the 1860 models. I thoroughly enjoy my 1858 reproduction made by CSA. Solid pistol and a hell of a lot of fun to shoot. The cylinder notch between the caps is a nice feature allowing safe carry of a fully loaded (6 round) cylinder. If you ever handle one of these side by side with an 1873 Colt, you will immediately see why the balance of the Colt and it's comparatively lighter action was such a quantum leap forward in design.
