San Francisco and Amsterdam are the #1 and #2 best cities in the world (according to Time Out magazine). Which is the better city for you?
I grew up in San Francisco and have been living in Amsterdam for over 2 years now. In this video, I compare the differences between San Francisco and Amsterdam in the following categories:

Health insurance isn't around 100 per year but per month. And you do get treated for 'minor' injuries: just at your GP's practice close to where you live, and in the weekends or at nights you can go to a central GP-post, often connected to a hospital. Hospitals themselves are for the real emergencies and for the real illnesses. Unless it is not life threatening, or you are at the early stages of something severe and you don't know it yet: the first step is going to your GP. He or she will then see soon enough if you just need basic treatment at the GP's practice or that you need a specialist in hospital. - Close to Amsterdam there's also a beach, so in summer time you're at the beach within 30 minutes. The difference in scale of Amsterdam vs San Francisco is big. Amsterdam is part of the Randstad. The Randstad is the biggest megalopolis of Europe. It contains several cities: Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and Den Haag (The Hague). But also lots of green areas, the beach close to Den Haag (Scheveningen) and Amsterdam (Zandvoort) of course. Amsterdam has in the metro region almost half the inhabitants compared to SF: 2,480,394 in Amsterdam vs 4,749,008 in San Francisco. And the Randstad has like 8,116,000 inhabitants. The Randstad is very well connected. Mostly you are within the hour in one of the other cities. By car but also you can depend on public transport to move you around: it is all very well connected by trains, trams and busses. I live like in Utrecht, in the northern part the city. And I go by bike to Utrecht Central Station, there I take a train to, for example, Amsterdam. Mostly I am from door (my own home) to door (the address I want to be in Amsterdam): within the hour. A train trip from Utrecht to Amsterdam, depending on which station in Amsterdam you want to exit takes between 20 to 30 minutes. 40 minutes by train to Rotterdam and somewhere similar to Den Haag (The Hague). Taking the intercity from Amsterdam to Den Haag will take you 50 minutes and from Amsterdam to Rotterdam around 1 hour and with intercity direct 40 minutes. From Amsterdam to Utrecht is also just 20 to 30 minutes. The Netherlands is not just car oriented. Public transport is reliable and it'll bring you quick and safe to almost anywhere in the country, also to villages. Even cities like Paris, Antwerp, London, are like a few hours away by train. Temperature wise it is a bit higher than the max of 18 degrees Celsius (64.4 Fahrenheit) David mentions: Amsterdam and the whole of the Randstad and everywhere else in the country can get very hot and humid in summer time, due to the relative proximity to the North Sea, or in the north of The Netherlands to the Wadden Sea. It can get to 34 degrees celcius (93 degree Fahrenheit), the humidity then makes it feel much hotter, and at some days it can go a bit above those temperatures. Can be very uncomfortable. But it is always very hot for just a few days or not more like 10 days, most of the summer days are like moderate. Hence why most households still don't prefer to get airconditioners in their homes. It is not long enough uncomfortable. And there're a lots of beaches to enjoy alongside the the west coast, but also like lakes within cities and in the country as a whole. And of course the nearby Wadden Islands in the north of the country. Food wise: well yes, what the Dutch cook at home (meaning the Dutch traditional cuisine) is for many foreigners underwhelming. But going out for dinner in the Netherlands, so also in the Randstad area, you can choose out of many cuisines from many countries. You will not easily find restaurants serving traditional Dutch cuisine, because the people themselves cook this at home and also the Dutch themselves see their food as quite basic (though still tasty, otherwise they wouldn't be eating it). So not sure where David went out for dinner but especially in the Randstad and other cities in the country you can find quite enough variation. French cuisine is still at the heart of most traditional restaurants but you can find lots of other international cuisines. All over the country really. You can find great sea food restaurants everywhere in The Netherlands but especially in the Randstad area and of course along the West Coast (which is nearby when you are in the Randstad area)..You just need to know where they are. But yes, at universities and businesses, lunches (during meetings, lectures or workshops) are often very basic: the simple sandwich with just cheese or with just some meat in between. That being sad, many big companies these days offer quite some variation in their company lunch areas: soups, fish, Mexican, Indonesian but also fried croquettes, fries or pizza. And you will see what's on offer, will rotate on a weekly base. All depending on the scale of the company of course. But yes, the Dutch themselves, if they bring like lunch from home (still happens a lot, also when people have like higher paid jobs in big companies) they bring like a simple sandwich with like that slice of cheese in between or a slice of meat. Plus some salad, or fruit or like a simple tomato or banana they bring from home :-D .

Hi Andre - thanks so much for taking the time to share your perspective. I will pin this because it's so informative. Yeah it's 100/month for health insurance (too bad I cannot change it in the video). And I do love how you can get anywhere in the country with the trains/public transportation-it's easy. And regards to restaurants/food options, there is quite a lot of variety in Amsterdam (though I do think the food culture in San Francisco is better). Either way, you'd be very lucky (I am grateful) to live in either San Francisco or Amsterdam =)

With regards to food. In my experience dutch supermarkets and street markets offer on average more affordable, higher quality fresh products compared to those in the bay area. As an added bonus, shopping can be done in 10 minutes in any Amsterdam neighborhood, without a car.

David, you said the Dutch parents drop their kids off in the middle of the forest to make them think on their own to get back home. Well, my parents in the states did that to me when I was 12 years old. It took me 2 and a half years to find them. I went to the local police for help. The police were very sympathetic. They told me, “Kid, be realistic, there are so many places they can hide!”

People who move from the States to live in Amsterdam and then complain about the costs of living really, really grind my gears. First of all, there are cities in the Netherlands that are just as pretty as Amsterdam, without all the tourism in the city center, or the extremely inflated housing market. After they landed, the first thing they mention, always, the cost of living is high. Eh, yeah, of course it is, it's Amsterdam. If I would move to New York, and complain about the rental prices down town, you would also roll your eyes. I'm glad to see your video, wherein you mention that the costs of living are actually manageable. I guess I've just seen too much vloggers who want to live abroad for a year, and pick Amsterdam, just for it's fame, while not being interested in the Dutch way of life.

Great video! On Healthcare in the Netherlands though... Someone should have explained to you that ALL medical treatments in NL start and end with your GP. Your GP is the only person who has a full overview of your medical status. If you require hospital treatment or if you need to see a specialist, you first need to get a refferal through your GP. Those specialists always report back to your GP as soon as a treatment has finished as well as intermittently when required. This also goes for mental treatments like with a psychiatrist or psychologist, or chiropractors and physiotherapists. So again, your GP will have the complete overview of your treatments at all times. This is called 'chain medicine' in the NL. The only reason you'd ever go to a hospital directly is when there is a life-threatening emergency or a severe medical injury. ie. a heart attack or a broken leg, a severe allergic reaction, or breathing issues, etc. If you can, still always call your GP or the 'Huisartenspost' first, so that they can prepare your arrival at the hospital if needed. A minor dog bite is considered to be NOT a life-threatening emergency in NL. You went straight to the hospital ER for a tetanus shot and they deferred you back to your GP. It does not mean that you were refused medical treatment, you were just at the wrong counter. You should have called or gone to your GP for this tetanus shot (and band-aid). The reason for this arrangement is that a GP medical treatment in the NL is almost 10 times cheaper than a (ER-)hospital treatment by a specialist. In order to keep the cost for Healthcare in NL down, a strict divide between urgent and non-urgent treatments was made. So, next time if you need any medical assistance always call your GP first ( or Huisartsenpost i.c.o. out office hours). ALL GPs have an emergency button on the IVR-menu and most IVRs are bilingual (NL-EN). Explain to them what the emergency is and I guarantee you that you will see a doctor within the hour. Suffice to say that all visits to your GP are free and unlimited. Happy days! Pro-tip: Put your GP phone number as well as your huisartsenpost phone number in your mobile, just in case. Do that now. If you do not know what your huisartsenpost number is then get it through your GP administration.

Great explanation. I agree with everything except for one thing: you don't need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist. You still needed it some years ago, but not anymore. If something happens and you require help from a physiotherapist you can make an appointment right away.

Also compared to the US and many other countries Dutch doctors tend to prescribe or treat way less because .... there is no monetary incentive to do so and often it is not needed. Minor issues, even minor infections DO NOT NEED medicines or therapy. Basic advice on lifestyle and diet is way better. For example US doctors that prescribe antibiotics for minor or even viral throat infections should be disbarred in my opinion! If you think a healthcare system is better because doctors give out more pills, do more surgery, sent people more often to specialists, it might be someone, somewhere, is fleecing you and you seem to like it.

Yes, but we pride ourself on the homeless experience. For example, we have a local raffle in the states, we all take bets on how long it will take before we get fired, loose our healthcare and go homeless. Going homeless is the new American experience. We always pride ourselves on being number 1 and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be number 1 in homelessness. After all, there are many new and exciting things you can learn from being homeless. For example, do you know, if you stand out back where the local stores keep their dumpsters, you can grab at least 4 good side big boxes and you can make a decent-sized cardboard house in about 45 minutes. However, I always have to bring up Harry Shultz. He was the best at putting together cardboard homes. He once beat his own record at 6.5 minutes. But, enough about good old Harry. Another essential thing you gotta learn when you become homeless is, the desperate sad look when you approach a person to put the bite on him. You know, asking for some spare change. I always practice in the bathroom mirror of the local Walmart. You really gotta work on that “desperate look.” Anyway, the next time you visit the states, if you ever wind up in South Florida, look me up, I’ll be riding the trains and wave when I go by! God Sped Martijn!

I think dutch people could change their food culture, they like a lot of exotic foods too but they are really happy with their breakfast and lunch options and don't want to eat as it seems to us "two dinners" like the americans do with a hot lunch. They like bread with butter and a slice of cheese or meat or the many sweet options. I always wondered what americans actually ate on bread because there seemed so few options compared to all our sprinkles and spreads. We like basic whole wheat bread twice a day almost al days of the year our whole lives aside from special breads for a leisurely lunch in the weekend. Putting some tomato or cucumber on the cheese with mayo. I'd say it's probably saved many people from having weight issues. As it turns out whole wheat with butter and cheese is actually a filling meal that only slowly releases energy so you are less inclined to overeat or snack too much. And dutch kids grow tall on it too and quite healthy. So it's a good thing so many people like it.

Haha thanks for the comment, it gave me a laugh. When I think of sandwich in the Netherlands, I think of bread and a slice of cheese. When I think of a sandwich in the US...I think of bread, cheese, ham, roast beef, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, jalapeños, mustard & mayo, and avocado. @@hidavidwen Yeah the bread has more sugar in it too and with the reputation for having bad cheese maybe they do need so many slices on it to make it taste good. If you are used to what they call hyper palatable food the simple meals we enjoy may taste like nothing. Even with all that on it they seem far less enthusiastic about bread than we are. Like for instance I suggested to an american woman long ago that she give her kids bread to bring to school and she reacted like I told her to put her kids on bread and water like in old dungeons, haha Her kids needed pizza because they did sports. Ehm yes dutch kids also play sports and are a lot healthier, even with all the sprinkles in al flavors they get to put on said bread. For instance dorm rooms where you are sleeping with a stranger there, you are adults? That is such an invasion of privacy and as if you can never truly relax. I love winter and the dutch especially love the sun, I don't like the heat but to most of the dutch summertime is terras vacation and party time and you can't get that exact feeling unless you have been in the grey for most of the year. What a beautiful portret paintings you have behind you. I think personally tech cities are a bit more boring (living near Zürich which is a bit comparible with the ETH top university and the technical entrepeneur spirit that brings that to the city) but cities like Amsterdam, New York or Berlin tend to have much more layers of history, art and culture. The divercity of people is bigger. Techies mostly don't start a theatre or are interesting in high art generally speaking, they are more into coding and gagdets. ( I work in the IT branche myself and I worked for large IT companies as Microsoft and EDS, I know the culture of the tech industry very well) . Amsterdam has over 200 art galeries, some of the best art museums in the world, the Concertgebouw orchestra, etc etc etc. Not to forget a city centre that can hardly be matched in terms of architecture and beauty. I don't think San Francisco is on eye level here with Amsterdam, although it overshine almost any other city on the planet when it comes to the software industry. There are a few things I do not agree with, regarding things to do in Amsterdam, you can do much more than what was listed by you. Certainly when you include the bigger Amsterdam region or the rest of the Netherlands, which you should as the country is so small. You can rent boats outside Amsterdam, e.g on the Vecht river. You can make great cycling tours into the country side. You could go Skydiving. I could probably list countless more things to do and we certainly have beaches I would say. Not to mention the enormous number of museums in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Regarding restaurants, there are so many really good restaurants in Amsterdam, including plenty of Michelin-star restaurants. Maybe not as many as San Fransisco (how many does one actually need?), simply because Amsterdam is indeed a more egalitarian city than SF. There simply is less demand for high-end Michelin star restaurants, although it is certainly increasing in the last 15 years probably also due to the increasing number of expats. There are numerous nice restaurants without a Michelin-star as well. And no, rough nature, like the natural reserves you showed around SF, we do not have, as this country is mainly man made and densely populated. But that nature is easily found a few hours drive away, e.g. in the Ardennes in Belgium. And is there a winner, for me absolutely.....it has to be Amsterdam. Always. : )

In my opinion that might be because in general SF restaurants just put more effort and care into their meals, whereas in Amsterdam you find much more “tourist trap” kind of restaurants. Maybe San Franciscans are a bit more critical and demanding towards what they are being served in restaurants than the Dutch are? However, slowly the quality and variety/diversity of the Amsterdam restaurants is improving and if you do a little preparation upfront, you WILL be able to find some gems. People working in restaurants etc or at McDonald's in the US, don't earn much. In fact they earn almost nothing and are obliged to work more than 1 job and as a waiter they have to rely on tips. In the Netherlands however they earn a decent salary just like everyone else. A Dutch waiter doesn't have to rely on tips, he doesn't need them. And an employee of a Dutch McDonald's earns a salary that's way higher than he would have in an American one. Don’t push people away, surround yourself with people who are spiritually mature and get the help that you need. Isolation when you are in pain and don’t know if there’s a way out is dangerous and that’s why we have suicide cases. Listen, there’s nothing that you can be facing that God is not able to solve for with God nothing is impossible. Hold on. Jesus loves you.

@mickeydejong8950

Your experiences with "Dutch Food" are unfortunate, but there are really good restaurants and cafes in the Netherlands with imaginative food made from local produce. The Netherlands has 111 Michelin starred rrestaurants, 137 Bib Gourmand restaurants, over 100 Gault & Millault restaurants and countless really good ones that are trying to get a distinction. Amsterdam is not really the best place, because of all the tourists, that created a sort of tourism industry in the whole centre of this city. But if you are interested in a high end restaurant in Amsterdam with Dutch cuisine, you should try "De Vijf Vliegen". Otherwise try the multiple amazing restaurants outside the capital city (for example in Utrecht, Breda, The Hague and Maastricht)
@mickeydejong8950
@mickeydejong8950 Жыл бұрын
And also, to compare the amount of Michelin starred restaurants in California (the Netherlands fits in california approx 10 times and has roughly twice the population): The whole of California has 90 Michelin starred restaurants. Also, you have restaurants in the Netherlands with dishes from every corner of the world, be it African, Asian, Australian or North and South American. So, as a foody, I do not agree with your view.

Thanks Mickey for sharing all that information. Yes I've heard about those Michelin restaurants...though I usually don't do a lot of fine dining unless for special occasions. But great recommendations, thank you. And hah yes there are different types of foodies. Sounds like you are a high-end restaurant type (I can't relate to that). Your video is slightly biased towards Amsterdam and the Netherlands for that matter. As I’ve been living in the Amsterdam area for nearly 14 years and recently experiencing US I want to add a few less favorable info about the NL. Firstly, taxes. Sales tax is 21%. Income tax, unless you earn pennies will end up being between 40-55%. If you own a house you pay water and house tax. You own a car? Great, next to the insurance you will pay the road tax. Tally up all taxes and from every 1000 earned you’ll be getting around 300-400 euro for yourself. Second, low salaries. The 120k yearly salary on the video is on a high end for software engineers in Amsterdam. 5-6.5k monthly is a more likely option. The dutch are well known for being notoriously stingy. No wonder with low salaries and high taxes you meed to be really careful about the money you spend. You won’t get broke due to the costs of the health procedure in the Netherlands. True. You simply never feel you have money and that’s regardless of your health condition. Third, “the average is more then enough” says the common dutch saying. If you happen to be ambitious, beware. Your boss, your colleagues, will be happy to thwart all your efforts. Forget also any extra profits as a result of your above average efforts. Forth, the quality of the services. Services suck in the Netherlands. In a restaurant you may wait 10-30 minutes to be helped. Fixing up internet in a new house may take weeks. Your bank may have unavailable system for days long and nobody cares.
@hidavidwen

Thanks for sharing Aleksander. It's always good to hear different perspectives. Yeah the taxes here are really high. And you do make significantly less here than in San Francisco. I'm aware of that...I realized staying in Amsterdam (vs. going back to San Francisco) may not be the best financial move...but more of a life move. Yeah if you are overly ambitious about your career, San Francisco is the better choice in my opinion.

People do work more and a big reason is because San Francisco attracts that certain personality (you move there for your career). But yeah…I love both for different reasons :) You can do anything within hours drive of San Francisco-national parks, hiking, mountains, lakes, snowboarding/skiing, surfing. American working life sounds like slavery to me. Well payed slavery, but still slavery. You can do a lot more things in San Francisco with the free time you don't have. You could see all of Europe in a hour flight away if you live in Amsterdam. Go skiing in the Swiss alps, sip wine in southern France, see the Berlin wall, go to party in ibiza, sit on the beach on mykonos, Make a picture with the tower of Pisa, see the eiffel tower, sit on lake Como with George Clooney, kiss a beautiful girl in stockholm or eat waffles with chocolate and cream in Bruges. You're in Europe in the city where the airport has the most connecting and cheap flights! Use those free weekends and days. There are also fast trains to berlin, paris and zurich from amsterdam for 40 euro's. Flight sometimes can be even cheaper. I flew to budapest hungary for 15 euro's last september. Not uncommon for flight to big cities in europe.

She actually wanted to go to France and Spain which are both terrible choices. She was half Mexican so she could speak perfect Spanish. I told her to go here because the language barriers and jobs aren't really for grabs in Spain or France. Very high unemployement rates in both countries. You really need to speak French in France too. I told her about worklife balance, low debt rates, safety, the vacation time and the vacation pay you get every year. Vacation pay should be in your video btw. I noticed a lot of people forget to notice this in videos of the Netherlands. They do that nowhere else. to get back on point... She got a promotion at Verizon and now she wants to stay. It's still her dream to come here, but she likes the pay too much. Fun fact! gdp per capita america is $69,231 gdp per capita netherlands is $58,292 debt to gdp america is 133.6 % debt to gdp netherlands is 56.25% If we borrowed as much as the US our gdp per capita would be twice as much as the US.
